Give us the pitch!
So hey, is it just me, or have comics been pretty dark for the last 30 years or so? When was the last time you thumbed through a comic book/graphic novel and couldn't help but smile and chuckle to yourself?
Now don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed my steady diet of anguished heroes, zombie-infested family drama, and constant influx of deranged serial killers, but I'm about ready for a change!
I miss jewel heists!
I miss heroes and villains engaging in pun-filled banter as they try to outsmart one another!
I miss characters with strange gimmicks and even stranger back stories!
So, with a laptop in my lap, a cup of coffee in my hand, and a dream in my heart, I decided to make just such a comic!
And just who are you?
My name is Jason Vandervort, and I'm a writer based out Cloquet Minnesota, a small town a couple hours north of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
So Jason, what was your plan?
Well, dear reader, I'll tell you! My plan was to write a story that felt like a heist film, through the filter of campy 1960's comics and TV. After I set these ground rules for myself, the story almost came together on it's own.
Hence, the Ferocious Five was born!
Groovy! Tell me more!
As I've mentioned, The Ferocious Five is a heist story. It centers on a group of costumed criminals who are given the opportunity to steal a rare jewel known as The Ebersbach Emerald. At the heart of this group of crooks is a guy I like to call The Cricket!
The Cricket is a world renowned thief, having stolen from some of the richest families and most heavily fortified institutions on the planet, all the while making a mockery of the police and costumed heroes alike. He is simply the best of the best! When we meet the Cricket, he finds himself a little bored of the heists and capers he's been a part of and is looking for a change of pace. As luck would have it, his fence and confidant, Marty, catches wind of a jewel heist that seems tailor-made for our hero: A rare family heirloom being covertly transported aboard a an oceanic blimp cruise.
A blimp? That's sheer madness!
It gets better! After looking over the scheme, The Cricket realizes that he may need a few extra sets of hands to pull this off, so he recruits a who's who of other well known crooks.
Freezerburn: A career criminal, and an expert in all things cold. In a world where cold-based supervillains are becoming more and more commonplace, Freezerburn finds himself short on work, and even shorter on cash. He joins the Five in hopes of a big payday and the recognition of a huge heist to put him back on the top of the snowbank.
The Silent Collector: A cat burglar and gentleman thief of the truly old school, plus the man who is rumored to taught The Cricket everything he knows about the art of costumed crime. Now semi-retired, The Silent Collector joins his former pupil as an adviser, as well as offering key intel through a network that he's built over a very long and lucrative career.
The Imposter: A former A-list actor, turned master of disguise for hire. The Imposter is known for his uncanny ability to become anyone, for the right price. The Cricket is able to recruit this man of many faces with the promise of the role of a lifetime on a stage like no other.
Baron Hypoxia: Baron Hypoxia is a man of simple passions. If it flies, he wants it. He is a top notch pilot and a collector of all manner of aircraft. The Cricket is able to convince this cantankerous pilot into joining the heist by offering him The Trans-Atlantic Air Cruise as a prize.
With the cast of characters put together and suitably campy heist put before them, I was ready to start typing. And I did a lot of typing. Before I knew it, I had a full graphic novel on my hands!
A full graphic novel?! That's rad!
I agree! It is pretty rad. 90 pages of rad, to be precise. As of right now, the story sits at 90 pages, with the possibility of more, after some final edits and maybe the help of a stretch goal or two!
Now enough about you, Jason! Tell us about who you're working with!
I'd be glad to! Now, I'm not an artist. My drawing skills are maybe one step above stick people, and I didn't think that would be a good fit for the story.
Here's where Kristin Tipping enters the picture! Kristin is a comic creator located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She's independently written, drawn, and released her own comics and graphic novels, such as Evil Witch Allie, and Bedtime Stories for Strangers.
Kristin and I have been working together for several months now. During that time, we've put together the concept art for the main cast of characters, as well as 10 pages from the first act of the story. But in order to get this project really off of the ground and ready to groove, we need some help!
Is this where I come in?
This is where you come in, intrepid investor! To ensure that this story can be completed and unleashed onto the world, Kristin and I are looking for $10,000. This will see that Kristin is fairly paid for all of her hard work, and for the book to be printed and sold to any fine retailer who will sell it!
So what if you make more than $10,000?!
In the event that we meet and exceed our goal, the first thing Kristin and I want to do is give the comic a full color treatment. If we're able to get that and still have room for more, I can always build on the script and add even more juicy content! But, one step at a time! First, we need to reach our goal!
What's in it for me, buddy?
All sorts of stuff, pal! Kristin and I aren't going to leave you hanging! Every backer will have their name featured in a "Thank You" portion at the end of our story. For those who want to go the extra mile, we have goodies!
We will have stickers!
A signed copy of the book!
And, for the chosen few, an appearance in the comic!
Thanks! I appreciate that! Kristin and I are very proud of what we've put together, and we hope you'll think to help us see this comic made!
Risks and challenges
So, how risky is this business?
We know that the price point we are asking for is a little steep. But, the way we see it is that you are paying for a full story. Should this project reach it's funding and the comic be released, you will have a completed work in your hands. You won't have to worry about having to wait for part two to come along and possibly not ever be released.
With any Kickstarter, there are some risks involved. This is the first Kickstarter project for both Kristin and myself, so it is very much a learning experience for us. But, we're both fully committed to seeing that this story is released. Plus, I have family that have completed several Kickstarters in the past and are familiar with how to ensure that rewards are sent out. Even if I have to pay out of my own pocket, I'll do my best to see that your faith in our project is honored!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
