To conclude the Prayerful Improvisations album series, it only seems fitting to give thanks to God by focusing on worship. Specifically this album is going to feature eight improvisations based on contemporary worship songs plus seven additional tracks (see below for more details).
Are you a fan of Hillsong, Jesus Culture, Sovereign Grace, Bethel Music, Elevation Worship, Chris Tomlin, Kari Jobe, and others like this? Well this album will include music from some of these wonderful worship music sources! You can be a part of this project by getting involved with the process and prayerfully partnering with me as we celebrate and worship God through the gift of music.
From the beginning of this series, the goal has been to convey God's peace, comfort and love through music, providing a relaxing and soothing balm for mind, body and soul. God has used this music far beyond anything I could hope for, and all for His glory...
"Tears were running down her face. She has dementia . . . We talked a bit, I rubbed her hands, but nothing seemed to calm her down. So, I decided to play her some music on my iPad. I just happened to download your CD, Prayerful Improvisations, which I had purchased on iTunes. Within a minute or two, she calmed right down, closed her eyes, and kept smiling. Your music just seemed to soothe her, and she told me that she really liked the music. . . . God bless! And thank you....” – Debi from Massachusetts
“It's timely, and it is timeless. It brings out the good from the inside, and it puts really good stuff inside of you. It will bring you peace, joy, and may make you smile. It has not been documented, but it could lower your blood pressure, calm you, and help you to fall asleep. It is a wonderful balm that will heal the wounded soul. I really like it . . . I think that your CD may increase my gas mileage. I find that I don't drive as aggressively, while listening to your CD.” – Gail from Massachusetts
“I spent the evening listening and I felt deeply touched, this was much more than I expected . . . your improvisation I found exceptionally well done . . . Currently I am working 3 days per week with a woman suffering from cancer whose doctors have given up (simply give drugs to ease the pain), so when I go there tomorrow I am going to take the additional CD you sent.” – Dirk from The Netherlands
“Your desire to bless the people of God with your music . . . well, it's wonderful! My mind is a perpetually busy, noisy place, and your music draws me into a place of quiet and peace and helps me fix my mind on the beauty and loveliness of the Lord rather than on the complexities and noise of this life. In short . . . thank you!” – Joan from Port Orange, Florida
“The album is really therapeutic. It is what I was hoping you would make. It is terrific what the Spirit has done through you! The sound of your instrument is so beautiful. Your touch is so peaceful, so thoughtful, so musical. I need music like this so badly. . . . This music is a little like David playing for Saul. It brings peace. So, your goal of bringing healing through music is being fulfilled.” – John from Wisconsin
What Can I Expect From This Project?
This album will include 15 tracks: 8 solo piano improvisations based on contemporary worship songs, 6 solo piano original worship improvisations, and one bonus track with added instrumentation. The album will be available in downloadable and hard copy (CD) formats. It will be recorded over the summer on my own Bösendorfer grand piano, a beautifully crafted and exquisitely sounding instrument (with four additional notes at the lower end of the keyboard!). Mixing and mastering will take place in early September with a goal to release the album to Kickstarter partners in October and to the world in November (before Thanksgiving).
What I love about Kickstarter projects is how everyone gets involved in the process. I try to post regular "blog" and video updates, as well as ask for your help in various ways. As mentioned earlier, this might include your suggestions for worship songs to be included, helping me select an album cover, helping select specific tracks to be included, naming some of the original tracks, etc. I hope you'll join me in the process!

What Are The Projected Costs?
Even though I am able to record this entire album in my home studio, there are some very real costs that are required for producing an album project. In particular because I will be recording eight tracks based on copyrighted songs, I need to obtain licensing for each of the songs used. This will cost just around $1,000 right off the top, which is why the total project goal is $1,000 more than the last project.
Projected costs also include piano tuning, mixing, mastering, graphics design for the CD inserts, replication costs for the CDs (1000 units), and some administrative costs including postage and supplies. I believe in this project, so that is why I am contributing some of my own money as well. As a musician and family provider, as one might imagine, funds to underwrite projects like this are usually not readily available. Partnering with others provide the resources to produce a high-quality product. And those resources are not limited to money, but include idea sharing, ministry support, and prayer . . . as MasterCard would say, these resources are “priceless.”
On their website, Kickstarter includes the following information on pledging, but I want to reiterate that if this project is not fully funded through Kickstarter, you will not be obligated to fulfill your monetary pledge through this organization. This is an “all or nothing” goal, and I believe Kickstarter deserves some kudos for operating this way. This encourages high-quality work and motivation for those who feel equipped to achieve their goal. Your support and the power of the Holy Spirit have given me the confidence to pursue this, trusting that God will provide for this project. I truly hope that you will feel a part of this project and that ultimately it will bless you greatly. Thank you for considering partnering with me.
Risks and challenges
I am scheduling four weeks of recording during the months of July and August to record all tracks. This should allow me enough time to "over record," that is to record more material than I will use in the final product. This way I can select the best recordings to be included on the album. Of course this will depend on scheduling the piano technician since the piano will need to be tuned before each session, but the technician I work with is very reliable.
My experience in music production, and the successful completion of my previous three Prayerful Improvisations albums, has given me the tools to plan, schedule and execute a project with success down to the smallest of details. While unknown factors tend to crop up during any project that could delay progress, I am confident this project will run smoothly in the time allotted.
I am happy to answer any questions or concerns you have and will be diligent in updating you on the progress as the project evolves. One thing I love about Kickstarter is that we get to do this together and have FUN creating something new!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
