STRETCH GOAL - To boost the films marketing budget. We want to ensure that audiences worldwide will hear about this documentary in the best way possible.
Our new targets are:
$65,000 - TRAILER Will allow us to beef up our trailer budget so we can present a world class documentary in the same league as our favourite music docs.
$70,000 - US PUBLICIST Hire the best publicist for our yet to be confirmed US festival premiere in early 2019 to help us stand out from the crowd.
Late last year, we were filming with The Chills lead singer Martin Phillipps when he was informed he had a 30% chance of dying within six to twelve months if he did not make substantial lifestyle changes. His subsequent decision to reconcile with the world and confront past mistakes has provided the foundation for a compelling and dramatic documentary narrative.
Martin has been called a lyrical genius and he and The Chills are credited as one of the founding pioneers of the iconic Dunedin Sound - the ground-breaking musical movement that inspired many seminal musicians around the world and helped usher in a new-found sense of cultural worth in New Zealand.
Life has been rocky for this influential musician, he has battled with addiction and depression and it’s taken an exacting toll on his health. Despite the setbacks though Martin has retained an unrelenting commitment to the music and his meticulous collection of pop culture, music and art.

The budget for this film will allow us to produce to the technical and quality level expected of an international film festival feature documentary.
We have already filmed some incredibly intimate footage, including documenting Martin’s health journey and The Chills sold out New Zealand tour earlier this year.
But now we need to keep up the momentum, filming key events for Martin’s personal journey and music.
Your contribution to our goal will make that a reality and allow us to do a huge amount of work towards the successful completion of this film!

Previous works by the team at Notable Pictures:
For me this documentary is a project that is one in a million. Over numerous calls I have grown to be more and more captivated by the artistic hurricane that is Martin Phillipps.
Rob Curry: "I started making this film as a simple live performance and interview project. By the end of the weekend, I was fully aware that there was potential for a much more substantial work in both the quality of the music and the back story. I have dedicated over two years in pursuit of this film and I can assure you it’s going to be incredibly powerful."
Julia Parnell:"This film has it all death, drama and luminous music, but it’s Martin’s unrelenting pursuit of his creative vision in the face of the greatest odds that is really inspired me in the creation of this film.”
Tim Riley: "The creative development of this film has been the most rewarding experience of my career to date. I was at Canterbury University in the early 1980s when the Dunedin Sound was just starting... now over 30 years later, I have the huge privilege of bringing this music and the story to the world.”
Nicola Peeperkoorn: "I am inspired by Martin Phillipps and the phenomenal music he has created, but I am also surprised at how little New Zealander’s know of the huge international influence this band had. The more I learn the more passionate I become about sharing this important slice of NZ music history."

Risks and challenges
There are always risks when it comes to securing the level of budget needed to make a world class film.
But, being experienced filmmakers with a track record of success, the chances of that happening, particularly with all of the support the film has gained thus far, is unlikely.
Ultimately, we are a tenacious bunch of people dedicated to making this film, and however it all plays out you have our commitment that we won’t let this special film fail.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
