About

May 2016 - seminar and testing
May 2016 - seminar and testing

White Tiger Martial Arts has been teaching martial arts and self-defense classes in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) metro area since 1998. Our mission differs from that of most schools in that we are focused on passing on the benefits martial arts provide to other aspects of life as compared to focusing on points for sport or profit. Given we want to make these benefits available to all who are interested, it has been our practice to provide all equipment needed during a free month long trial process, no time contracts as required by most other schools, and affordable tuition lower than any we have seen elsewhere.

Even old-timers can swing swords!
Even old-timers can swing swords!
Our school has developed friendships across a diverse and loyal student base, where 14 yr olds interact with 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and even 70 year olds. From white belt through 4th Dan black belts, families and friends training together and learning from each other. We have many who have been looking for and activity and organization that offers mental, physical and flexibility enhancement at levels that can be different for each individual and their abilities.
Most of our success comes from the ancient practice of having the students involved with the school programming and planning. In fact, this document is a combination of input from a number of our students. Most are active in helping guide upcoming ranks, participate in community demonstrations and direction of the program. Our goal is to share the passion, knowledge and balance of life that Taekwondo and Haidong Gumdo generate, not just to get a paycheck.

This wisdom and passion is being learned and passed down from those other Masters and schools we train with that follow the same philosophy. Our lineage includes top-ranking masters such as USA Haidong Gumdo Association Senior Chief Master Marshall Parnell,World Haidong Gumdo Federation Director of Education Head Master Jeong Woo Kim, Song Moo Kwan Taekwondo Head Master Joon Pyo Choi . Our main focus is on relating how this wisdom is also applicable to all parts of real life, as compared to only on the training floor. The physical techniques make up only 10% of a martial art. The other 90% is how you apply the principles, concepts and strategies. These are of great importance in the problem solving and conflicts of daily life.

Over the years we’ve typically tried to hold classes in community locations, such as Parks & Rec facilities and charter schools so that students can easily access our programs. Unfortunately, the availability and accessibility of these locations have diminished due to community regulations, insurance issues and public time constraints. This has made it much harder for students to find and attend our classes.

Despite this, our classes have grown in size and enthusiasm. If we are able to establish our own permanent home as the sole leaseholder, we can increase classes from 4 hours to over 20 hour per week. This would allow more time slots for those with limited schedules to participate. We would even be able to host youth classes, after-school programming, and open up access to various community programs. The space we are looking at would also be twice as large as our current space, which will allow not just more participants in general, but larger multi-school seminars, led by visiting top-ranking masters in Haidong Gumdo and Taekwondo.

We hope that with our own new permanent home, we will be able to continue to improve the quality of training we provide, increase the access to those that want to participate, and open our space to wider community programs.

Our Sabumnim is Master Robert Frankovich. He has built this program around the tradition of using martial arts to teach ‘The Way’. A traditional method of learning to live life centered around personal responsibility, respect of oneself and other and, a path toward excellence in all you do. While he has studied several martial arts (Song Moo Kwan Taekwondo, Seidokan Aikido & Haidong Gumdo), it is really The Way that ties them all together. While most schools today focus on competition and how many trophies one can obtain, he has stayed true to the values that can be brought to individuals, but also to how that individual in turn brings it to society as a whole. We hope you can see and share in our mission and can help us make this knowledge and participation more readily available.

Risks and challenges

This project's struggle will be in obtaining the best possible location to benefit the current students' needs while also attracting new students. The funds may not be able to cover the predicted cost as lease rates for the space chosen may be different than calculated. Lastly, the spaces that are currently being considered may not be available in July, though this is the desired opening time.
