If the last 10 years of my musical and creative journey were a forrest of trees, they would definitely be deciduous ones. With each passing season I have struggled through a process of constant change, self-evaluation, and at times, felt lost about how to articulate my musical vision. But change is growth and while I may have changed my leaves, one thing is for sure, I've kept my roots intact.
Label executives have propositioned me with questions like, "Do you want to be famous?" and "If you were to define yourself as being more like Adele, Beyonce or Lady Gaga, who would you be?" The truth is, I've never really defined myself or my music by the status quo. I grew up listening to country music, but at 14 my mother gave me a copy of "Blue" by Joni Mitchell and having never heard a woman as confessional and vulnerable as that, I was moved. Then I wrote "Cold Water", and completely without meaning to I discovered an R&B edge to my songwriting sensibility. These last two years have been spent figuring out how all of these different influences resonate with me.
Needless to say, I've tried to put myself in categories that felt like squeezing a circle into a triangle. But what it all has come down to is a little voice in my head that keeps telling me to see the forrest through the trees. To trust the journey and not just the destination. And for the first time I don't feel like I need to compare myself to anyone. I'm just me.
One of the main reasons I am doing this is because enough people have come up to me after shows asking for a CD and when I tell them I don't have one, they are disappointed, leaving me with just an email address or a name to contact them by "when" I have something to share. Well, the time has come. I am so beyond ready to put something out there that feels like an authentic expression of who I am. And I'm doing it because over the last year all of YOU have encouraged me to do that.
I'm very excited about this project. In the past I've always recorded track by track. Click, scratch guitar, drums, bass, etc, etc. And I'm always left feeling like something is missing from the recording. Some element of soul or feel. So for the first time, with this project, I am going to be tracking everything live. Just like so many of my favorite records, this one is going to capture the magic of a live performance, with everyone in the same room, playing together. I'm so excited about this! The Fortress is an amazing studio and the musicians I've found over the last year are not only world class players, but have become some of my best friends and musical collaborators and I couldn't be more excited to have them backing me up on this record. We've been playing some of these songs together for over a year now so it's going to feel really good to take all that hard work and get creative expanding the sound in a studio setting.
The completion of this project will enable me to move forward in ways I haven't been able to. It will allow me to:
1.TOUR with a product in hand
2. pursue LICENSING OPPORTUNITIES in film and television
3. book BIGGER SHOWS and festivals
and, something I'm really looking forward to...
3. make a MUSIC VIDEO.
Last but certainly not least, I want to say THANK YOU for taking the time to check out my fundraising page and read my story. However big or small your financial contribution to this project, I want you to know how truly grateful I am for your support.
I've been a wild seed, but I'm ready to root down and make the record I've been dreaming up for the last two years. Your help is going to make that possible.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Risks and challenges
Honestly, I am setting the fundraising target kind of low for what I know I need to make a decent record. $5000 will pretty much only cover the cost of recording, engineering and mixing. And that's because I am getting a good deal. A really good deal. I would love to be able to hire an excellent mastering engineer, an artsy photographer for a creative cover shot, a graphic designer, get 1,000 printed copies of the record, make a music video and hire a publicist, maybe even finance a little tour. I would also love to be able to pay my band a little more. I have a group of STELLAR musicians, who have become some of my closest friends, who have played out with me over the last year for nothing but gas money, and who are going to play on this record for about the same. We may run into challenges like knowing the potential of a track but not having the budget to achieve what we are envisioning--that kind of thing. What I want YOU to know, is that even with $5000 I am prepared to make this record to the best of my ability. Any additional money will only mean extra sounds, textures, maybe additional tracks. The quality of this project is truly in your hands. In any case, I am prepared to make a record no matter the budget, setbacks, challenges, or obstacles. And no matter what, I WILL have a handful of original songs to give you by next year!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
