About this project
We are making a Neon Sign Documentary! It all started when we realized that our sign sucks. So we decided to get a NEON SIGN!
We want to make a short documentary about the neon sign making process to illustrate the importance of supporting local craftsman in the community and to show the history of Neon Sign Making in NYC.
We are getting a custom neon sign made from Artistic Neon - located in Ridgewood, Queens, NYC. We plan to film the entire process start to finish, plus more!
With the direction of the amazing Miguel A. Rodrigues of Marofoto, we are producing a short documentary about the Neon Sign Making process, starring Robbie Ingui of Artistic Neon - a second generation Neon Sign Maker - in order to tell his unique story and to celebrate a craft that has created a unique visual landscape in NYC for over 100 years.
Robbie rules - you're going to love this guy! He is extremely talented, hilarious and has the best NY accent ever. Fug-get-about-it!
You may even get to meet Robbie's dog Shamus!
Thomas Rinaldi who wrote the book "New York Neon" has agreed to be interviewed to share the history of Neon in New York City.
We are super excited to travel to upstate NY to interview Robbie's father, who taught Robbie everything he knows about Neon Sign Making. (I think his Mom is going to make us lasagna, too!)
And we plan to interview other businesses, like Tiny Kindgom and Circo's Pastry Shop, whom Robbie has made signs for to show the synergy between local businesses supporting one another in creative endeavours.
The perks for donating are pretty amazing, from cool magnets, tees and totes, to screenings, a "lighting party" at Artistic Neon (I'm making rice balls) plus a Neon Sign Making Workshop taught by Robbie!
The Kickstarter fundraiser will pay for the production of Greenpointers Neon documentary and help us pay for the sign.
Please help us produce this important documentary about a truly artisan craft that is so NYC!
Thanks in advance for your love and support. We cannot wait to start working on this!
Risks and challenges
The risks are minimal from a production standpoint. Artistic Neon has agreed to allow us to produce the documentary in his workshop. There is potential that the schedule (which we have set to film) may need to change depending on the sign making production schedule of Artistic Neon. In this case we are prepared to delay filming. Editing the final production may be a challenge, but we are hiring a professional video editor to work on the project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
