Introduction

The Digirule 1A and 2A are perhaps the coolest circuit board rulers around. Each ruler contains an 8-bit PIC microcontroller, multiple push-buttons and LED's which allow the user to interact with them - in binary!

History

Back in 2015, the original Digirule was successfully funded on Kickstarter. A few years later, the Digirule 2 was also successfully funded on Kickstarter:

Both of these designs have received upgrades and are now ready for release (right here on Kickstarter!) as the Digirule 1A and Digirule 2A. The Digirule 1A has received upgrades to its microcontroller, buttons and firmware while the Digirule 2A has received upgrades to its firmware and instruction set.

Digirule 1A - Overview

The Digirule 1A is an interactive binary PCB ruler which features seven logic gates, four flip flops and a 4-bit binary counter, which is all powered by an 8-bit PIC microcontroller.

Digirule 1A - Features

  • Dimensions 156mm x 33mm x 1.6mm
  • Seven Logic Gates (NOT, OR, AND, XOR, NOR, NAND and XNOR)
  • Four Flip Flops (SR, JK, Toggle and Data)
  • Four bit binary up / down counter
  • Open Source Hardware and Software
  • Powered by an 8-bit Microchip PIC18F45K20 Microcontroller
  • Eight built-in 'hidden' modes.
  • CR2032 battery is not included due to shipping restrictions

Digirule 2A - Overview

The Digirule 2A is essentially an 8-bit binary computer of the 1970's, built into a 20cm PCB ruler. It features an 8-bit address bus, 8-bit data bus, eight data input buttons and 35 instructions for you to code your own programs.

Digirule 2A - Instruction Set

With an instruction set consisting of 35 instructions - the Digirule 2A can be programmed to perform all sorts of tasks, including fun games such as 'kill-the-bit' which was made famous on the Altair 8800 or perhaps a Knightrider LED scanner, binary counter or binary calculator.

An Excel spreadsheet allows you to easily write your code in mnemonic form - it will then automatically convert it into binary machine code for you to enter into the Digirule 2A:

Digirule 2A - Features

  • Dimensions 209mm x 40mm x 1.6mm
  • 35 Instructions
  • Open Source Hardware and Software
  • Powered by an 8-bit Microchip PIC18F45K20 Microcontroller
  • 256 Byte program memory space (four bytes are reserved)
  • 8-bit data bus
  • 8-bit address bus
  • Eight blocks of 256 Byte flash memory to save your programs
  • Eight address LED's
  • Eight Data LED's
  • Eight Data input buttons
  • CR2032 battery is not included due to shipping restrictions

Open Source

Both the Digirule 1A and 2A are completely open source and all files will be available for download including source code, schematic, PCB design, bill of materials and Gerber files.

Production Schedule

Prototyping is complete, the Digirule 1A and 2A have been tested and are ready for backers - all I need now, is you! (and your friends).

Shipping

Shipping will take place from Australia by untracked standard airmail. While this isn't the fastest method available, it is the most cost effective while still being reliable.

And finally...

Thanks for taking the time to check out the Kickstarter campaign, if you'd like a DigiRule 1A or 2A (or both) to call your very own, then be sure to put in a pledge and I'll get them out to you ASAP!

Please note: Due to postage restrictions on lithium batteries, the CR2032 battery will not be included with each reward. I apologise for this however it is not something that I can change. As such, you will need to purchase a battery locally.

Risks and challenges

I have run numerous successful Kickstarter campaigns over the last few years and have been able to deliver rewards within the advertised time frames.

However challenges do arise such as delays with components and / or pcb manufacture etc... However since I have been working on projects like this since 2007 and have dealt extensively with component and pcb manufacturing companies, along with running numerous successful Kickstarter campaigns, I am confident that if any challenges do arise, I will certainly be able to overcome them to again make this a successful campaign.
