Cover Photography by JUSTIN KATES
An inordinate and at times obsessive preoccupation with fantasy might easily well be psychiatrists' notes in the case file of one Justin Kates. Justin spent his formative years in Salisbury, North Carolina, searching for anything to shatter the ennui of a conservative southern city. Growing up in the Bible belt state of North Carolina, young Justin encountered the thunderous clamor of Christendom, hellfire, brimstone, damnation and fanaticism. To this fervor, he reacted badly...resisting the stranglehold of righteousness by plunging headlong into Lovecraftian mythology, role-playing games, heavy metal, and artistic pursuits that would arm him with the visual vocabulary with which he would develop his distinctive and carnal style. Every artistic pursuit preceding his photographic work has provided tools that he would eventually apply to current digital art. What is Justin's style? As with most artists, it is not simply a topic, subject, or rehearsed technique. Kates puts his stamp on things that others might glamourize by corroding, roughening, and artfully destroying objects of beauty and desire. This method, this gritty deconstruction of aesthetic objects results in a strange beauty, a revealing of the shadow side of human behavior.
Cover Model CORA DEITZ
I am a dancer, an artist, a writer, a photographer, a student, a teacher, and a model. This is a dream that has thrived in me since I was a little girl, and the joy that I have found in bringing this dream to fruition is immeasurable. It began at Justin Kates’ model search for his book Sanguis Vitam. The flier was handed to me by a sexy girl covered in tattoos and pink dreads (who is now my good friend), and sought models for a Vampire Art book! Not sure if it was my obsession Vampires, my dream of modeling, or my fascination with the tatted girl, but I immediately started preparing for it. I took Justin Kates my handful of Costco prints of self portraits I had done, and nervously described how much I wanted this. That same night he chose me as one of his models for the book, and the owner of Single Cell Productions, who I only know by Torch, asked me to be a part of his production company. The two of them, along with several other Single Cell members, helped me build my portfolio and rise to where I am now. I signed with Wilhelmina Evolution landed my first big job – a K Swiss Advertisement in ESPN Magazine and a national commercial, and I certainly don’t plan on stopping there! I am incredibly anxious to see where this road will take me. Aside from my modeling career, I have danced for 17 years and recently started teaching dance in Charlotte, NC. I am also beginning the third year of my Psychology degree at Queens University. I am anxious to continue meeting many talented photographers, assisting them in bringing images from imagination to reality, and becoming a part of the art that has inspired my insatiable desire to create.
Music by Baron Marcus of the Vampire Beach Babes
The song “Goddamn Snake (Aleron)” is a tribute to one of the key characters in the Vampyre Theatre graphic novel. “It’s a dark refection on a dark character, regarding a dark human truth” says Baron Marcus about the song. “I found Nancy’s vampires inspiring and hauntingly familiar, so the song came smooth and easy – but with a bite.”
