This is your opportunity to help the creators of "Say Goodbye, Grace: A Detective Story" to make a unique, creative, and ground-breaking short film. With an amazing screenplay, a spectacular cast, & an experienced crew, we all aim to make this short film something to be remembered and talked about well beyond the initial viewing be it in movie theaters across the nation or in your home theaters. Either way, we want to show our film to you.

We are a dedicated group of people located in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska. We are passionate about this film. We are excited for this film. We are thrilled to put this project up on Kickstarter because we believe that with your help we will be able to make this campaign a success. We're asking for $9K to make this Kickstarter campaign for our short film a success.

You can help make this campaign a success by securing your "Say Goodbye, Grace: A Detective Story" rewards by backing and/or pledging to donate towards this one-of-a-kind short film. Please remember, every pledge gets us closer to our goals, and our stretch goals where EVERY SINGLE BACKER will be benefited!

Our team includes an award-winning cast & crew that have been a part of well-reviewed & well-received projects by fans & critics alike. From cast to crew, from graphic designers to prop masters, from best boys to key make-up artists this team is ready to make the concept of this film a reality.

Our producers, some of them successful filmmakers themselves, have earned distribution deals and have been accepted into film festivals. Without a doubt, these producers will bring a bevy of information to the filmmaking process. This knowledge will add to the overall quality of the end product of the film.

Our crew is experienced, professional, and devoted to this project and their positions on set. Everyone on set has previously been employed at that position, whether on other short films, feature films, or commercial work. This empowering & supportive crew is truly the brains of this production.

Our cast is beyond talented and thrilled to be a part of this project. A mix of both seasoned professionals and new-found talent, the cast will be able to present the exact mood and tone of the film with ease. With multiple auditions of escalating standards, the cast earned their spots with not only talent, but passion and drive.

With the rise of the Midwest as a creative hub, many of our cast & crew are passionate individuals with hard-working attitudes that are dying for a real film set experiences. We aim to give them that experience as well as a film they can point to with pride and say, "I was a part of that." We are all looking forward to adding this to our resume as one of our proudest achievements.

Below are the key crew members of our short film, "Say Goodbye, Grace".

We'll keep it short. Not only because it's a synopsis, but because it's a short film.

"Say Goodbye, Grace: A Detective Story" takes place in Black Bay, a small, fictional, seedy city in the Pacific Northwest. If one were to visit Black Bay, they'd come to find out that nothing is as it seems.

We follow Grace Crawford, a tough-as-nails detective, who returns to her office one night to discover an old friend she hasn't spoken to in ages dying at her desk. With his last breath, he asks her close the investigation he regrets ever opening. What follows is a brutal story of deceit, loss, and retribution. In the end, Grace will have to decide what's most important: the investigation or her life.

This story is as intense as it is engaging. If you help back the project, you'll find out what makes this film so unlike other detective films out there.

Act I - Good Friends, Bad Feelings
Act I - Good Friends, Bad Feelings

This short film is in the genre of a noir with a sub-genres of a "neo-noir," "neon-noir," and/or a detective film.

What does this mean? It means that the film will be taking place in a modern setting during current times. It will be shot in color, but the visual style will be accentuated with brighter colors, being almost hyper-visualized, and will include all the colors, in one way or another, across the visual color spectrum. Yet, the film will still retain the crushing blacks, dark shadows, and blinding whites of any true noir film. It's a newer style that combines genres, fits our story perfectly without feeling forced or pretentious, and is universally appealing.

Of course, a critical part of any noir film, be it a neo-noir or neon-noir is the believability in the characters and the situation. The script and story, as mentioned before, is wonderful and co-written by the talented, Daniel Grzeskowiak. The dialogue feels natural and true to a noir as well as immersive and revealing of the characters who speak the lines. These characters need to be perfectly cast, and we believe we have found some of the best talent available for the roles.

Below are the key cast members of our short film, "Say Goodbye, Grace".

Below are the three phases of the film: pre-production, production, and post-production. The phases are budgeted to show where the money will go.

Pre-Production Budget
Pre-Production Budget

The pre-production budget (see above) of the film will be complete at the time of you reading this; hence the precision of US dollars spent. We have spent a considerable amount on the press kits and on the ads for the film itself across social media platforms.

The bulk of the spending in pre-production is in legal. Acquiring permits, drafting contracts, and legitimately verifying permits is not cheap. It is important to cover ourselves and those working with us to ensure safety as well as professionalism.

Production Budget
Production Budget

The production phase of the film (see above) is always, generally, the most expensive phase of any film. It is apparent that the majority of the budget in production is going towards cinematography which is no mistake nor something we take lightly. In the ever growing age of technological advancement especially in the digital age of pixels & projected quality we found that it is important to present the film in one of the highest mediums available to us. We will be shooting on a RED camera and we'll be using some of the best lenses to give you the best possible image with every shot.

Post-Production Budget
Post-Production Budget

Finally, the post-production of the budget (see above) is about the same cost of the pre-production budget of the film. You'll see that the "Color Correction" area is getting the most amount of the budget. Like the other areas previously, we have decided that the look of the film is the most important aspect of post-production. We have a group of talented colorists that are excited to work on this "neon-noir" because it is something new & exciting for them.

You'll see that we have put in the budget an "Errors & Omissions" line. If you're curious what this is, this is basically how we make sure that the film is legally covered against any future lawsuits and copyright infringements. It is a necessity in the filmmaking process and when submitting a film through the film festival circuit. We've also carved out a small amount of the post-production budget for film festival fees. Unfortunately, most film festivals are not free to enter, but there are discounts given to certain groups or sites and we plan on utilizing those to make the submission price go down while the number of the festivals we will be entering go up.

We want to preserve the independent film attitude while presenting it to you in a professional context & style and that will not be easy or cheap, which means we need your help. Your support will help us get a chance to create a truly unique and entertaining film.

We consider ourselves realists. We've worked hard on this Kickstarter and we believe it shows. In case there is an abundance of community support we have supplied stretch goals if we crush our original goal of $9K. We believe that these stretch goals will show our gratitude to those who donate, pledge, and back this Kickstarter campaign. We want to make sure that you enjoy the film as much as we will have making it.

If you've tallied up all of the totals across the three phases which are budgeted, than you'll notice that the film will cost more than the $9K we are asking for here on Kickstarter. At this point, the film can be made for the amount we are asking for and with a skeleton crew and a bare bones production & post-production team. But, if we are able to successfully achieve the $9K that we're asking for than maybe we can both benefit with the stretch goals we have in place.

Below are our Stretch Goals for "Say Goodbye, Grace: A Detective Story."

Reach This Stretch Goal # 2
Reach This Stretch Goal # 2

We have been planning this film now for over eight months, and we're absolutely ready to make this film. But, what are we doing? We've got wardrobes bought, actors hired, crew contracted, storyboards drawn, cinematography agreed upon, and an unbelievably fantastic vision for the film.

After the initial shooting in August, we will edit, color correct, add sound SFX, add foley sound, edit sound design, record the original soundtrack, edit, polish, render, screen, and test that cut at the Prairie Lights Film Festival in early October 2016. Why here? This film was a brainchild of a state-wide film movement to make noir films here in Nebraska. After the initial screening is completed in October, we plan on taking the next few months to correct any issues that may be addressed in that test screening.

After that we will be submitting this into film festivals across the nation for the better part of the next year, entering it into as many film festivals as possible. We've made the short film in hopes of having the run time between fifteen (15) and nineteen (19) minutes long. This run time is ideal for short films being entered, and more likely accepted into film festivals due to this length. Trust us, this is no accident. This entire campaign, film, and submission process has been meticulously planned.

This film has real substance and real weight. With its conceptualization and vision considered there is an undeniably real possibility of this film being accepted into film festivals, earning awards, getting recognition, and hopefully, getting picked up for distribution.

We're aiming for mid-2017 for a final cut. We should remind you that any film can be delayed due to schedule constraints or sudden new access to people, locations, or developments. We definitely feel that access to more opportunities would be a good reason to wait to release this film on DVD & Blu-ray.

Act II - No More Secrets
Act II - No More Secrets

WHY IS THERE NO TRAILER?

Excellent question. Since the short film will roughly be about nineteen (19) minutes long we know that our scenes, as well as our story secrets can be given away in an instant. We must limit how much we put out.

Most movie trailers that are between 1:30 and 2:30 minutes contain between 100 - 200 different shots spanning over 50 different scenes. If we were to make a teaser or theatrical trailer for "Say Goodbye, Grace: A Detective Story", then we would basically be ruining the film's entire act progression and plot. Plus we would be ruining any possible suspense.

DO I GET ALCOHOL IF I BACK "THE PRIVATE EYE" TIER?

Excellent question. No. No, you do not. As one of the rewards tiers, i.e. "The Private Eye," you'll receive an empty bottle with a specially designed label on it. Think of it as an empty decanter with a label we had drawn up for the film and for this tier only.

Movie Magic # 322 - Tea Doubles as Whiskey
Movie Magic # 322 - Tea Doubles as Whiskey

This bottle of Black Bay bourbon, which will weigh roughly five (5) lbs., will arrive empty at your front door along with the other rewards in this tier. We, in no way, will supply you with or are promising alcohol. Nor or we promising you that glass with ice, cherries, and tea or that globe.

Our graphic design team has put a lot of time designing this bottle's label as a memento of your contribution towards the film, and possibly to remind you of the film when you drink whatever you have in there.

WHO SIGNS WHAT?

Excellent question. When a tier says that an item will be signed, sometimes there is confusion over who will sign what. The DVDs, Blu-Rays, and all the posters (excluding "The Kingpin" & "The Hero" reward tiers theatrical poster) will be signed by the filmmaker only. But, the singular Kingpin reward tier's theatrical  24" x 36" movie poster will be signed by the entire cast and crew.

WHO IS THE MODEL FOR YOUR TEASER POSTER?

Excellent question. The model for our teaser poster is one, Emily Dorsett, an incredibly talented actor in Los Angeles. She will not be playing the main character, Grace Crawford, but she was the model we used before casting was completed.

ARE THERE EASTER EGGS ON THIS KICKSTARTER PAGE?

Excellent question. Absolutely.

Please, circulate this Kickstarter URL if you can not donate, pledge or back this project yourself. The more people who know about it, the more people share our Kickstarter, the higher probability we have of getting successfully funded and making this film a reality.

Risks and challenges

There are many risks and challenges with any film, especially when shooting in real locations, but luckily we have lawyers, a $1M insurance plan, and permits to help ease any legal difficulties, speed up any unexpected shut-downs, or answer all questions that the city, state, or government may feel the need to ask.

Another issue is wrangling a large cast and crew like this for five nights in a row with multiple locations, but again, we've luckily secured everyone in for the times so we do not hit any shooting snags, complications, or issues. It is possible that we could come across some time constraints due to the complicated nature of some shots, but we'll want to complete this as soon as possible while keeping this a fast, fun, and safe set.

Yet another challenge we are expecting to address is the nature of the poster image and the film's subject material itself. This is not a film that supports or glorifies abuse towards women in any way, form, or capacity. In fact, it doesn't even glorify violence either, but shows how stressful and draining it is. Since it is a short film, time is crucial in developing the character, and we've chosen to give her a black eye and cut lip to complement her steely resolve in such a seedy city.

A risk we face, as all film sets do, is running out of money which is a possibility if the above challenges happen to come to fruition. The only departments we see possibly running into issues is the music department and color correction due to the amount of time it takes to effectively, and accurately complement the short film in post-production. These two departments are vital to the overall tone of the film.
