By popular demand Refold is establishing local manufacturing in the United States of America. Shipping cardboard halfway around the world doesn’t make much sense to us, so to reduce environmental impact and price, we are now offering 100% American made Refold desks.
Early next year the Refold team are venturing to the USA to set up manufacturing and distribution partners. The delivery date of June 2015 ensures we can get up and running and deliver a quality product.
Make sure you get in quick there are only 100 early bird desks!Scroll down to the rewards section for more info.
Refold is proud to present its cardboard standing desk.
100% recyclable and completely New Zealand made it showcases the perfect combination of innovation and environmental awareness.
This desk enables your lifestyle. It folds into a lightweight, compact carry case, allowing you to work and live the way you want.
The flexible, user-friendly design caters to endless applications. It could be used for offices, schools, creative studios, events, or even mobile offices and disaster relief. The desk is yours to decide how it can work for you.
The desk is designed to take everything you can throw at it, and then some. Capable of holding the weight of a person and made using durable 7mm thick, twin cushion, kraft cardboard, this desk will last!
Weighing only 6.5kg's our design adds a new dimension to hot desking and fluid workspaces.
The portability facilitates a modern workflow, allowing flexibility and aiding collaboration. It enables project teams to assemble a unique collaborative working environment in minutes and adapt it to their needs as they change.
As the desk folds beautifully away into a self containing carry case it is the perfect space saver and allows easy storage.
The design folds and slots together in less than 2 minutes, using four main pieces, with no tape or glue.
An enjoyable user experience is at the centre of our design process. This has resulted in an assembly that on the surface may appear complex, but in reality is intuitive, memorable and incredibly simple.
So why stand? Some simple reasons, you will have more energy, be more productive and it will aid collaboration and engagement. A more pressing reason is it will improve your health and could save your life. Don't just take our word for it though...

Not everyone is the same height, so neither are our standing desks. The design comes in three sizes – small, medium & large – to help you achieve an ergonomic work surface.
For desks that are going to be shared we recommend medium.
Please note: you will be asked to specify the size of your standing desk via a survey at the end of the funding period.
Careful consideration has been taken to ensure our design is user friendly, both as a desk, and as a carry case. The case is tailored to a comfortable carrying height, whilst still retaining a generous desk top. For mobility the desk even fits through doorways while made up.
Refold is driven by aspirations of giving back and using our designs to 'do some good'. We see these desks as a product to instigate positive change in the schools of those who are less fortunate. We are honoured to be able to collaborate with UNICEF New Zealand to make this happen!
We are excited to have two pledge opportunities for you to improve education in the Pacific Islands and help those in need.
—ONE—
'Piece by piece' contribute by pledging for one or more parts of a desk.
The completed desks will then be sent to a school in the Pacific Islands by UNICEF New Zealand.
PARTS MENU
$20 = 2x Supports
$30 = 1x Tabletop
$50 = 1x Body
$60 = 2x Legs
—TWO— 'A desk to make a difference' with this pledge you will receive your very own Refold standing desk, but more importantly, a full desk will also be sent to a school in the Pacific Islands.
Something as simple as a desk, will make a difference.
Being cardboard, the entire surface of the desk is printable, paintable and offers endless opportunities.
We see the desk as a blank canvas. To celebrate it, we are establishing a series with New Zealand artists and illustrators.
Our latest collaboration is with local Wellington artist – T-Wei.
Our second collaboration was with local Wellington artist – Anna Johnstone.
Our first Collaboration was with local Wellington artist – Gwil.
Reaching our minimum funding goal of $25,000 will enable us to complete our first consumer production run, making the desk available to individuals for the first time.
If we reach our minimum goal, our stretch goal will be to reach $40,000 which will put us in a position to consider setting up our own production machinery. This will create a abundance of benefits. First, it will open the door to allow true customisation as well as significantly reduce our production costs ensuring we can maintain affordable pricing. Second, our turn around times will also significantly improve. Additionally, it will allow us to easily adapt the design as well as prototype and develop new products, which we're really excited about!
After initially exploring die-cutting, we quickly found it to be restrictive and therefore favoured digital fabrication due to its potential for customisation and adaptability.
Another positive to digital fabrication is the crisp, knife cut edges, enabling us to produce a more premium product.
The legs are constructed from three layers of 7mm cardboard which are laminated together with alternating flute directions for maximum strength. The glue is 100% environmentally friendly retaining our products full recyclability.
The estimated delivery dates reflect a conservative production timeline to ensure we can meet and fulfil all of our kickstarter orders.
We have recently worked with our suppliers to complete a trial run of 50 desks. From this we have learnt where any issues are in our production process and have also gained a better understanding of timeframes.
We're Refold, and we're made up of (from the left) Matt, Fraser and Ollie. We started Refold because we all enjoy challenging expectations.
We believe that there is always an alternative option. The desk is a product of this belief. This is us challenging the expectation that 'work' means sitting in front of a computer 9 to 5, 5 days a week.
Based in Wellington, NZ – the coolest little capital in the world. We aspire to use design thinking to become a catalyst for positive change globally.
With your support we're going to keep challenging expectations. This desk is just the beginning.
Earlier this year, we spoke at the first TEDxWellington event along with 12 other amazing and inspiring speakers. We talked about going against expectations, creating new ways of working, all while assembling and working at the desk on stage. Check out the video below!
Riesgos y desafíos
Over the last 12 months we have established and tested production methods with our suppliers and recently completed a trial run of 50 desks. This highlighted where issues may arise in our production processes and has allowed us to gain a better understanding of timeframes.
We are aware scaling production on an innovative product like this comes with potential risks. However, we are determined to maintain a focus on quality throughout the production process, ensuring the desks are made to Refold’s high standards.
We have minimised risk by producing everything from the cardboard to the finished product locally in New Zealand.
The estimated delivery dates reflect a realistic production and fulfillment timeline to ensure we can meet all of our Kickstarter orders on time.
If we reach our stretch goal of $40,000, it will enable us to set up our own production machinery. This will come with additional risks but with the help of our knowledgeable support network, we are confident we can minimise and manage these.
