NEW BACKING LEVEL ADDED: Support the campaign for the new edition of Metaphor Dice by pledging $20 to receive a copy of Taylor Mali's most recent book, "Late Father & Other Poems," inscribed to the father of your choice. Can be delivered by the end of May (under all the right conditions)!
Other recent backing tiers include:
This was always going to be an option later, but people kept asking for it NOW! One of the most popular backing levels from last year is finally BACK! For only $11 per set, you can have the NEW edition of Metaphor Dice delivered into the hands of unsuspecting but enthusiastic English teachers as a random act of kindness! Call it a blessing from out of the blue or a chance to pay it forward. Whatever you call it, folks want to do it!
NEW BACKING LEVEL ADDED: Receive an AUTOGRAPHED & EMBOSSED copy of Taylor's book, "What Teachers Make: In Praise of the Greatest Job in the World," plus an ORIGINAL set of Metaphor Dice, 10 LIKE-FREE ZONE stickers, and a "What Teachers Make" pullout banner pen all mailed out by the end of May (as long as you fill out your survey in time)!
NEW BACKING LEVEL ADDED: Receive six sets of last near's 12-dice original starter set for only $50, the best price ever offered for the 2018 product that has been called the "game changer for teaching creative writing in the classroom." We can likely ship these out during the months of May & June!
When you fill out your backing survey after the campaign is over, you can always "add on" a set of the new edition then, because they do look like they will be pretty awesome, too:
This is the first expansion set after last year's original Metaphor Dice, which are now out in the world helping writers of all kinds think and write more figuratively (available on Amazon and MetaphorDice.com). This new set will be called the Erudition Edition!
We ran an online survey for over a month, and by a landslide most folks just wanted more challenging words! Not necessarily BIGGER words—they won't all be SAT or GRE words—but they might be RARER words, QUIRKIER words, or simply words that are just more . . . SMILEWORTHY. Here are the final results of the survey:
The words on the ERUDITION EDITION will be completely new so if you have last year's original Starter Set, you will not find any repeat words. However, the size of the dice will be the same (22mm), and the colors will be identical as well: red for the concepts, blue for the objects, and white for the adjectives. The dice will be used exactly like the originals (more on that below).
One final important difference: The new sets will be 25% less expensive than the originals ($15 per set as opposed to $20). We managed this in part because we've learned some important lessons about how to make the final product more affordable this time around. However, it must also be mentioned that each new set itself will be a little smaller; there will be only nine dice in a set (instead of 12). But make no mistake: three dice of each color means there are 18 possible words in each category to choose from, which makes the total number of possible unique metaphors in every box 18 x 18 x 18, or 5,832! That's a new metaphor every day for almost 16 years!
Although originally conceived as an expansion set, one of the best things about the winning category (erudite vocabulary) is that it can be used by itself as a standalone set. That said, these new dice will work seamlessly with the original set. And because we plan on printing the words for this set DIAGONALLY, you will easily be able to tell which dice come from which box if you do decide to mix two different sets. And yes, we will redesign the dice on the outside of the box to make them diagonal, too (thank you for that suggestion, Jennifer C.! Teachers think of everything)!
We haven't decided for sure yet what words will be included in the new set; we just have lists and lists of possibilities both awesome and irksome! However, as an example of the likely direction we're headed, here are three words that may make the final cut:
We don't want all the words to be massive vocabulary words! Every roll of the dice should offer you some words you know and feel comfortable; you won't have to go to the dictionary (unless you want to)!
The basic idea for using the dice remains the same as it was for the original set and starts with the understanding that a metaphor is a simple EQUATION between a larger concept and a smaller object with perhaps an adjective added as a variable. There are two main ways to arrange a metaphor after a roll—red, white, and blue ("my father IS a broken mirror") or white, blue, and red ("the broken mirror OF my father")—but there's no wrong way to use the dice so long as they give you new ideas for things to write about or think about.
You will eventually be charged for shipping; we're just not calculating it here as part of the Kickstarter campaign. Once the campaign is over, we plan to manage the FULFILLMENT process using Backerkit, a similar type of platform that has better tools for determining shipping costs. We promise that shipping will be reasonable, even to foreign countries.
Risks and challenges
This is a considerably larger amount of money that we are trying to raise, especially since we are not charging for shipping up front (we'll figure that out later). However, if we are successful the overall unit cost of each set will be significantly less. Basically, we want to raise the funds required to place an order from our manufacturer for 5,000 sets, not just 1,000. Go big or go home, right?
I learned last time not to talk too much about individual WORDS that I was considering for the dice, because nothing will please everyone. When I announced late in the last campaign that I was including the object CURVEBALL, you wouldn't believe the uproar that followed! "I backed this project because it had nothing to do with sports! The jocks have everything!" I am a little wiser now.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
