Are you ready for this? Sitting down? Really ready? Good, because...
If we hit £8000 next stretch goal WE HAVE SAMUEL R. DELANY!!!
Yes, if we hit 8K we're going to have a story in Everyone: Worlds without Walls by none other than one of the brightest and most beloved luminaries in the history of speculative fiction - a pioneer who blazed the trail for so many of LGBTQ + writers and writers of colour that we celebrate today. We just heard from Chip today (yes, we call him Chip!), and he has very kindly agreed to let us reprint one of his stories from a very important work that... well... if you don't know... you should! And, once you get your copy of Everyone: Worlds without Walls, you will! Help us get this next stretch goal! Pleaseeee!
If you haven't gotten over to the Kickstarter yet to pledge your support, please pop on over there now and get yourself some of the great rewards we have on offer.
If you have, please spread the word!
We have SAMUEL R. DELANY!!
As a thank you to everyone who has pledged or will pledge any amount - you get the StarShipSofa Originals FREE!
Over 100hrs of science fiction goodness!
These ‘original’ StarShipSofa episodes were hosted by Tony C Smith and Ciaran O’Carroll. The show was first broadcast in July 2006 and focused on Alfred Bester. This format was carried on until show No. 70 when O’Carroll left. The next thirty shows were completed by Tony C Smith and one by Professor Amy H. Sturgis
Tony C. Smith here, coming to you from the northeast of England, on this here planet Earth we all call home.
And what times we are living in on this world of ours. You can see it here in the UK, and even more coming across from America, news of division and injustice based on the notion that there’s an “us” and a “them”, and that those differences mean that “they” must be driven out or shut out by walls. We’re seeing so much happening that at bottom seems to be fueled by fear, manipulation, and hate.
Ten years ago I started StarShipSofa - just a little show featuring great science fiction authors of the past. We started out featuring the classics - the big names that everyone knows. Even then in those humble days we knew we wanted to shine a light on diverse writers - Ursula K. LeGuin, James Tiptree Jr., Samuel R. Delany, and other luminaries who helped create the tapestry of science fiction as we know it today.
Ever since then, StarShipSofa has sought out and celebrated diverse writers and stories. That dedication to diversity has only grown stronger over the years, and we will keep working to do even better. On top of that, we’ve shone a light on the value of exploring and sharing knowledge - everything from science, culture, history, music, art and more - because truth is what inspires us, and makes us better citizens of the world.
And that’s what it’s about - our vision of a better world. Along with our sister podcasts Tales to Terrify and Far-Fetched Fables, I really believe we have brought that vision to life in the District of Wonders.
The District of Wonders is a world where we know that diversity makes us richer. It’s a world where there are no walls, no barriers, no guns, no hatred. The District of Wonders is a world that values equality, and seeks to recognize and welcome people of all backgrounds, religions, races, cultures, and expressions of humanity. It’s a world that values truth. Everyone has a story in the District of Wonders - and every story is important. Everyone is important. So what I’m asking now is that you join me in standing against injustice and discrimination in the way that the District of Wonders does best - by sharing stories.
If successful, this Kickstarter will fund an e-book anthology of stories that offer a greater representation of ALL the people of this beautiful rich world
The District of Wonders will draw upon its incredible network of authors and actively seek new voices to bring you a scintillating showcase of what it means to value everyone. With talent and tales from diverse nations, cultures, races, and experiences, this anthology will explore and celebrate how we are greater together – and, conversely, the need to tear down walls of ignorance, prejudice, and injustice.

If we are lucky to hit our goal.
£5000 - we will bring 5 more writers to the Everyone: Worlds Without Walls
For 10 years, the District of Wonders’ flagship podcast Hugo Award Winning StarShipSofa has broadcast the finest of science fiction and speculative stories, as well as inspiring fact articles and interviews presented by leaders in the field about science, literature, culture, and more. Joined by sister podcasts Far-Fetched Fables (fantasy) and the award-winning Tales to Terrify (horror), the District of Wonders is a warm and welcoming community that actively seeks and presents diverse voices. We truly believe that EVERYONE has a story in the District of Wonders – in all our rich variety and experience, the District of Wonders is proof that we are stronger and better together.
What we will do with the monies raised from this project: All of the money raised by this project will be used to fund Everyone: Worlds Without Walls. If any monies left over it will go into the District of Wonders Network to keep producing stories like ones in this anthology.
