WOODEN ECLIPTIC DISPLAY BOXES NOW AVAILABLE!
For thousands of years humanity has stared up at the night skies with amazement and wonder. The natural rhythms of the stars, planets, and the sun and moon took on more significance than just their clock-like movement across our skies.
Early stargazers divided the night sky into 12 equal partitions or ‘signs’ —each with corresponding constellations which are the basis of what we know as the Zodiac. These zones of the night sky fall along what's called the planetary ecliptic - the plane of the planets in our solar system - hence the name of this project. I've always loved looking up at the night sky and seeing how the planets cut a line straight across the heavens.
Over the centuries, the Zodiac signs and constellations were represented by symbols and incredible artwork—engravings of fantastical creatures and mystical gods from mythology.
This project is inspired by that rich tradition.
For the past year, I've been pouring myself heart and soul into the art for this project. The idea that I could reimagine the way constellations have traditionally been represented was too tempting a thought to resist! Each of the cards is a new spin on the signs of the Zodiac—blending tradition with my own interpretation. It's with great pleasure that I'm bringing you these cards!
There are two editions of Ecliptic Playing Cards—the Standard Edition (SE) and the Limited Edition (LE). Both decks share the same art and linework. The Standard Edition has a nebula background that is a continuous, painted nebula image on the uncut sheet (see add-ons below). The Limited Edition is a celestial blue and will be a hand numbered edition.
Please note that not all of the cards are locked in, and some may change as the project fully takes shape (all images are comp images). I'll also be finishing the artwork over the course of the campaign, so suggestions are welcome!
There will be two versions of Ecliptic. One that has a color nebula background (Standard Edition) and one that's a celestial blue (Limited Edition). The LE version will be an edition of at least 1000 decks. The final quantity will depend on the number folks back for, but at least 1000 will be produced. The LE version will not be printed again, and each will be hand numbered as shown below.
Here are some images of the box (please note that all card and box images are comps-only and subject to change as the project evolves):
As with my past projects, I'm making prints available of of each royal design. Each corresponds with a sign of the zodiac.

These are the same heavy-duty, 10 gauge, full-dollar sized coins (39mm) I had minted for my past projects, this time with an antique silver finish. They're a great weight (about the same as 5 quarters), super detailed and have a gorgeous finish. Other coins are molded, these are minted and that's a difference you can see and feel in the detail. Nothing beats a 100 tons of pressure making every detail pop.

Risks and challenges
I've created 5 fairly successful Kickstarter campaigns in the past - so I know there are always curveballs that challenge the best of plans. However, I feel super confident about this project. I've worked with the company who's making the cards and coins and know their turnaround times, I've shipped thousands of rewards to every corner of the world and know the complexities involved, and I've made good on every project in the past. My biggest watch-outs for Ecliptic are the finishes and the shipping timeframes. If the project gets big (I should be so lucky), that might push out the delivery a little, but not much.
Also, you might be wondering why I'm running this project since Hobo Coins Series II hasn't shipped yet. For that project, all the orders are in to the manufacturers and it's just a waiting game at this point. Rather than do nothing until items come in, I thought it made sense to bring you Ecliptic.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
