About

Hello everyone! My name is Andrew Goryniak, I'm a Pole, currently living in England. An idea to create a RPG set in the times of the Crusades was born around a year ago when I was reading one of the books on the subject. Since then a vast project has expanded in my mind, but I tried to accumulate more knowledge before I start doing anything with the game itself. I'm a huge enthusiast of the whole ''Crusade movement'' although the term itself hadn't been commonly used to describe this phenomenon of history since only recently.

One of the problems I have when it comes to the question of this game ever coming into existence is if there is anyone out there who would want to play it? In other words: Is there any demand for such a creation?

If one would answer this question, he has to know of what kind of a project are we talking about here. As from a role-playing perspective, I would like to create a game-play experience of a Crusading Lord - who not only controls his servants and armies, but also his lands, their populations (to the extent of his real possibilities of course), is completely responsible for his actions and his will is what drives his man towards their goal. He may own a ship or a ship flotilla. He may have borrowed money from the Venetians to feed his Army. He may have had to pledge his lands to his brother to be able to pay his man after several months of fighting with his foes. He will use these man to fight great battles of courage and sword, of faith and hope, of woe and trechery. He will rise new kingdoms in the unknown lands. He will govern them while maintaining relations with his neighbours. All that, and much more in the vast world of history, gameplay and imagination set in this wonderful time period, when the wills of single man shaped kingdoms and empires. Time period when even the insignificant - like the obscure Hautevilles - could have had carved for themselves a kingdom.

This is a considerable task to do - describing and setting into rules all those aspects of gameplay that needs to be addressed here: mass battles - on land and sea alike, mechanics of diplomacy, trade, taxation, economies, governing provinces, dukedoms, kingdoms. Vassal system, interaction with existing powers, with your own power, et cetera.

And then there is even greater field of knowledge that must be implemented into the game - history itself. I want the game to be as close to reality as possible when it goes to historical precision. I studied medieval history on a University level so I think I might be well equipped to do the job, although I know that it will take many hours still to accumulate the needed knowledge, process it and make it suitably represented in the game environment.

I know that all that and much more is possible here. But I know not if there are people interested in me trying to strive towards this final goal - an epic guidebook for a medieval RPG game of crusading armies and dominions. This is why I've set up the goal of £300 (Good start for funding the books I need - some of them cost £30+). If we manage to achieve this, then I will launch a full campaign for the game itself.

I also think that we will have to divide the full game into parts, the first one being: 'the First Crusade' with the gameplay starting with Council of Clermont of 1095 and finishes with a successful (or failure to) capture Jerusalem (further winning/loosing conditions will be established and as this will be a game of imagination, the end game can be set by the players themselves). Next, I will start working on the period of the Frankish Realms in the Holy Land which will constitute part two: the Crusading Dominions (subject to change). Then there is the unknown future that will eventually come to pass, hopefully it will see this project in existence!

Risks and challenges

The main challenge we will have to face is time itself. I have several jobs at the moment but I think I can fully give all of my remaining free time working on the game (apart from work I have no distractions). I want to do this alone and I'm aware that it will take a seriuous amount of time to harvest even the first fruits of my work. Therefore I ask all of my supporters for patience. We will get there, but it will be a slow march. I want to sculpt this one with love and hard work so it becomes a beautiful creation, to be cherished by players (not only them but also enthusiasts of the period, amateur historians, and curious readers) for long time to come. I'm not doing this for money either; if the project fails to be funded, then I probably will still be working on it, but with slower pace and higher risk of neglecting it for other intellectual strivings.
