A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY
Johnny Rock & Friends: For The Record brings together several amazing, unsigned musicians to record a once-in-a-lifetime album. Calling on writers, musicians, and family, drummer/producer Johnny Rock has formed small ensembles to write and record this special vinyl LP. More than a compilation of songs, For The Record will be produced as two cohesive sides of new original music, recorded and mixed on tape; analog all the way to the cutting head. The album packaging will also feature hand drawn artwork to minimize the 1’s and 0’s between the artists and the audience.
Most of the album’s participants have never released a vinyl record. Today there is a very small number of craftsmen with the skill and equipment to cut a vinyl record without digital processing. This may be Johnny Rock’s and friends’ one and only chance to make an album with the quality and vibe of the records that first inspired them. From hard rock to smooth jazz, it all blends together for the record.

LET'S TALK CROWD PARTICIPATION!
Here's where YOU come in! Recording and mixing is almost finished and pretty soon we'll be getting into manufacturing. We've launched this campaign to fund an initial pressing of 500 records, and the printing of full color sleeves and jackets. Even if you do not own a turntable, every dollar you contribute gets you a chance to hear this music digitally, months ahead of the actual release.
For fans, this album presents your favorite band members in a new light sonically, musically, and even visually. Our ever-expanding YouTube Channel takes you through each song, from conception to completion in the recording studio. Artist Spotlights take a deep look at who we are, what inspires us, how we became friends, and why this project is so important to us. And for audio enthusiasts, we deliver an all-inclusive look at the process of recording an album entirely on tape and mastering for vinyl (the latter coming soon).
And rewards? YES! We have lots of fun rewards. For a start, even $1 gets you a "thank you" printed on the record sleeve and published online. Every backer also gets to download songs ahead of the general public. $10 gets you the digital mastering of the full album (tack on $5 more and get the bonus tracks as well). Backers who pledge $25 or more get the record and bonus digital tracks delivered to them ahead of the release date. Pledge $50 or more, then we throw in T-Shirts and signed memorabilia. Back us to the tune of $100 or more and you'll really put us to work! DVD extras, CD gift baskets, new recordings, and maybe a live concert - it's all there for the taking (er...uhhh...giving!!).
Our current goal is $2,000, but the finished product gets better and better if we cross a few more thresholds. If we reach $3,500, we'll expand our record jackets from single-sleeve into a gatefold design, giving us double the space to print more artwork, pictures, etc. Should we raise $5,000, we could also press our 500 records onto 180 gram vinyl. But, if reaching that amount is the result of more demand, then we will press more regular weight records.
A PERSONAL NOTE
Part of what keeps my friends and me making music is the chance to meet new fans and support each other. For The Record has proved to me that local music scenes are not as fragmented as you may think. I've played in a lot of bands, and the ones I keep coming back to are those who show support no matter what scene we're in. We go to our friends' concerts, we buy their albums, we promote them on social media, we visit them in the studio, and we help out when hard times hit. All of this is explored in our videos, and I can hear it in the music we've created.
The first fans of this album have been the people involved, and that's why this is my friends' album just as much as it is mine. My grand hope for this record is that we all make a few new fans in the process, and that the experience we've had transcends ANY medium on which it's presented.
Our home on the web is JohnnyRockRecord.com. We've got bios for every artist, links to our music (For The Record and beyond), details about every song, videos, blogs, and more. Simply stated, it's our own little universe in one neat package. We hope you'll check us out and get a feel for what we've been up to since December of 2012. Much love to you all, and thank you for supporting local music. ROCK. ON. -JR
Risks and challenges
Vinyl manufacturing can have very unpredictable turnaround times, due to the many stages of the process (plating, forming metal parts, making stampers, test pressing approvals, etc). We can guarantee that a digital mastering will be available and delivered well in advance of the physical album.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
