This is Combo Ranger, a lightweight, fastpaced game that has a very high difficulty level and is meant for some of the more experienced gamers. This game is all about timing, precision and quick strategic thinking.
How is it played?
You, as a player, have to defeat a series of enemies to finish a level. You do so by dashing into them with your sword. This will give you a moment of slowmotion that allows you to initiate the next dash. This allows the player to perform combo's by chain-killing the enemies. If an enemy touches you, it's game-over but within a second you can try again.
How is it kept interesting after the first five minutes?
Right now, every one or two levels introduces a new mechanic or enemy type. This keeps the game interesting and different for every level. Also there are two gamemodes in order to get a bit of extra variety. And to top it all off the game is varied a bit more due to the upgrade system and the special abilities within it.
Can I play the game?
Yes you can! There is an open early acces gameplay demo that can be downloaded under the following link:
This version will however not be updated. If you do want to get the updated versions as they arrive, you can do so by backing (see the rewards).
Why I am making this game?
This project started off as a project for my studies (Gametechnology at the university of Utrecht in the Netherlands). I spent a lot of time and effort into making this game, and to be honest, I just really enjoyed playing it myself. I must have already spent 50 hours playing it during development. Other people also seemed to like it and the project was graded very high by the teachers and students. That is why I want to finish the game and release it. The project was a group assignment but I will be finishing and releasing it alone.
Why I am here?
Publishing a game has some setup cost, for example it will cost 100 dollars in order to set up a game on steam and about 600 in order to get the necessary copyrights. I do not have the money to fund such a thing and therefore i would be unable to complete and publish the project without your help. Furthermore, I make this page in order to see if people are actually interested, as a way of getting feedback from players and in order to get some traction.
If enough funds are raised I will hire someone to draw professional art assets for me.
What will I improve on?
As of right now the game is more of a prototype. There are levels and it is playable and fun but it just does not feel like a completed game yet.
First of all, there are still some sprites and sound-effects that are missing.
Then, I want to add a bit of a storyline to the game. Because as of right now the player is just killing people without any particular reason. With this storyline also comes a better intro level that shows what you have to do instead of just being an easy level with some text on the ground. This story will also include something that will amp up the pressure so the player only has a certain time (in levels) to defeat the final boss.
Also, I want to make the level select into a map that leads upto a castle for example and make it so that the levels correspond to the map (for example towns, forests or camps).
This leads to the next point, being environment variety. Right now each level is just a very large piece of grass and I want to make it more interesting by adding different kinds of maps so the player might fight himself fighting on a bridge for example.
To show off all of the mechanics, each one or two levels adds a new mechanic or enemy type. This keeps things interesting, but it does however lead to the game being a bit overwhelming at times. The next enemy is introduced before actually getting familar with the previous one. And because this is a game based on skill and practise, some levels should be added in between in order to increase playtime and let the player practise more. Because more levels are added, there will also be more bosses. They will have interesting moves and abilities.
An options menu will also be added instead of the default Unity menu. This menu will also include settings for sound, screenshake and other effects.
€1000 - The game will be finished (all of the points above) and will be launched on Steam upon completion.
€1050 - The game will have controller support.
€1300 - I will hire someone who can make professional graphics.
€1500 - I will also make a mobile version of the game.

Risks and challenges
I think the biggest challenge will be to get people's attention, because as of right now the game does not look very flashing. It is much fun to play so that is not the issue but first I have to get people to play it before they know if they would like it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
