Introduction by Joe Prospero (Creative Director) featuring Arissa the dog!
A time of Heroes and Hellions. Philosophers and Fools. Of Gods and Mortals.
WHAT WE WANT TO CREATE?
We would like to produce a 45 minute pilot episode for a fantasy-drama series, based on the work of Homer, Virgil, Euripides and other great Classical writers.
Of Gods and Mortals will be a multi-narrative series that brings together the stories of some of Ancient Greece's most well known figures in a character driven series that steers away from CGI and special effects in order to bring to life the real emotional, political, sexual and historical context of these wonderful, timeless tales.
We want to bring an aesthetic sense of grandeur, suitable to the drama of the setting, whilst exploring the psychology behind the mythology - instead of opting for endless battle sequences and gratuitous computer generated monsters !
It is for this reason we have chosen episodic instalments as the means to tell this story. The texts we are working with span decades and there are innumerable well drawn characters, plots and sub-plots to work with, so as a viable series Of Gods and Mortals has a lot of potential and we have already figured out a story arch for a complete ten episode first series
Our pilot, The Apple of Discord will set the premise for the series as a whole.
Synopsis: The Gods gather to toast the birth of baby Achilles, but one Goddess is determined to disturb the revelry. A squabble breaks out among three of the Goddesses - Hera, Aphrodite and Athena; a squabble ultimately resolved by the judgment of the young Prince Paris of Troy. His decision, to choose love over wisdom and power, sets into motion a decades long war on Earth and in the Heavens and changes the course of the lives Of Gods and Mortals throughout all of Greece...

Costume - In order to achieve a strong look for the world of the Gods and that of the mortals, we are having costume supplied by two sartorial geniuses; The National Theater providing an historical look for the mortals and Prangsta Costumiers www.prangsta.co.uk creating a fantastical feast for the Gods.
Sound - Supplying a unique and magical sound especially for "Of Gods and Mortals" will be the wonderful Celtic speed-folk band Perkelt www.perkelt.com
Camera - We are very excited to announce that with the help of Kinetic Cameras we have secured a RED Dragon camera to shoot on. Now, for those of you not tech-savvy, if the name wasn't cool enough you'll be impressed to know RED is the current leading film industry camera, with the Dragon being the latest update. Very few of these are available in the UK and have recently been used to shoot films such as The Great Gatsby, The Hobbit, and Prometheus.
For those of you more technologically minded, full technical specifications can be found on Kinetic Camera website www.kineticcameras.co.uk
Location - Of Gods and Mortals will be shot mostly on location throughout the UK. We are have already secured areas of natural beauty as well as neo-classical buildings in the UK to double up for Troy, Sparta etc. Location shooting allows us to save on the cost and environmental impact of building set, while also allowing us to financially support and showcase some of the finest sites in the UK including;
WHAT DO WE NEED THE MONEY FOR?
This is a hugely ambitious show with a large cast and crew that might have cost another company tens, if not hundreds of thousands of pounds to create. Our team of talented individuals who are extremely passionate about the project, believe in its potential and have agreed to work for nominal fees and we have already managed to save huge production costs. Given our collective background as artists and bohemians, creating beautiful things on a shoe-string comes naturally to us!
This means all the funding is going directly toward essential costs;
- Location Hire
- Costume Hire
- Transportation and travel
The total we have requested - £7,000 - We want to raise that amount via crowd-funding to gain a following who will be passionate about the project.
WHY WE NEED YOU?
In the creative industries unless you're a Weinstein or an adopted child of Brangelina, it is very difficult to get help funding your projects. Kickstarter provides an invaluable platform for us - the filmakers - to reach you - the audience- directly and gather your support from the beginning of a project.
This is a beautiful, symbiotic relationship that allows us to know exactly who the fans are that we are creating this for and stay in contact with them throughout the film making process, and it allows you to be incremental in the creation of the next-big-thing in TV fantasy drama (we'll be sure to thank you all when we pick up a BAFTA!!)
Another reason we would love to make as much as we can via crowd-funding is in order to maintain as much creative control and independence over "Of Gods and Mortals" as possible. The downside that comes with a big production company backing is that they are then at liberty to take your precious story and have their wicked corporate way with it - homogenising, editing and tweaking until they have the finished generic article. We would hate for that to be the case with this show, because unlike Faulkner we are not ready "to kill our darlings" just yet!
WHAT WILL WE DO WHEN FUNDED?
Once we have made enough for the episode, we will then shoot the pilot in June/July and use that material to help secure funding from production companies, independent producers and private investors to finalise the episode.
The ultimate goal for the "Of Gods and Mortals" pilot is for it to be picked up by a major studio/distributor and turned into the next big fantasy drama series, the likes to rival Game of Thrones, Xena: Warrior Princess, Davinci's Demons et al.
If we are not picked up for a full series, at very least, the pilot will stand as an example of the quality, cinematic television that can be produced in the UK and by Tempest Productions and hopefully aiding us in securing support for future productions - of which we already have lots in the pipe-line.
Thank you so much for your time and if you are able to support the project in any way, all of us at Tempest thank you from the bottom of our hearts (and also with some lovely treats to - check the list to your right!)
I leave you with these words from Homer:
“Everything is more beautiful because we’re doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again.”

Risks and challenges
There are a thousand and one things that can go wrong on a production, but there are also a thousand ways in which you COULD die ever day, but I find it healthiest not not to dwell on these things!
Film making is an "on the job" experience, the more you do it the more you cope with the pitfalls. Collectively the entire team has clocked up thousands of hours on professional film and television - we are well equipped to deal with all the usual suspects.
Often facing obstacles forces you to be more creative and that is one of the joys of film making. You never truly know if it is going to work until you capture that magic through a lense. All you can do till that happens is pray to the Gods (particularly Apollo for good weather!)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
