*NEW: Stretch goal reached = extras!
I can now further fatten the reward packages! On top of the items already listed along the right hand side, for backers at the $25 and $37 levels, I can now add 1 additional card - and for all backers at and above the $50 level, I can now add either 1 poster OR 2 cards+1 print. And, I'll be printing more books.
So, this is an alphabet book.
That aspect of my project is pretty much self explanatory. (FYI, the illustrations for letters "A" through "R" can all be seen up there in that short video, and also tucked away in update #4.)
At the end of the day, there will be two versions of the book, a deluxe hand-made limited edition, and an easygoing paperback. But more on those (and the other rewards) in a moment.
Another alphabet book, you say. Well, the tale of how I came to draw it may give a better sense of what makes it unique.
A few years ago in response to an extraordinary baby boom in my immediate circle of friends and colleagues, I started drawing - I wanted to make something for my friends, for whom I was so excited, something beautiful to celebrate this moment in their lives, but also something for their kids, too. I am a musician, not an illustrator, so I had no idea where it was leading or how I would eventually reproduce it, but I just kept drawing, and hoped the path would make itself apparent.
Very well then, that just as I was finishing the drawings I got a recommendation for Philip Riley at Skink Ink, from whom I now have excellent scans of all the artwork, and have seen and been thrilled by the glorious giclee prints he can make from them. (I hadn't heard of giclee prints before, there is a great description of them on his website if they are new to you also - they are luminous and extraordinarily faithful to the original drawings.) Philip then led me to Corina Reynolds at Small Editions, a wonderful bookbinder, who will see the book through the next and final steps.
(So help me, I can't come up with a way to incorporate an x...)
Yes, I am a musician by trade, but I have also always drawn, this and that, now and then. My First Coffee Table Book is easily the zenith of those occasional efforts.
The Books and the Rewards
This - all of it - is a limited time offer. I am a freelance musician, and am not branching out into the book business. If you are charmed by the images and would like a copy of the book or the other rewards, or know people who you think would like them, please share this project, and act now.
The paperback books will be 5"x5", and sturdy, manufactured specifically for little hands. All copies of this limited edition will be numbered and signed.
The artist books will be entirely handmade. They will be accordions, that can open flat on a table like a regular book, but they can also be displayed standing up, stretched out and splayed open to any pages/letters you like (they will be 7"x7"). They will house individually printed giclee prints that will be visible through and protected by hand cut paper windows - the whole thing a virtual portfolio, with a cover of fine Italian cloth. All copies of this limited edition will be numbered and signed.
There will be cards - folded greeting cards (blank inside, perfect for giving as gifts, or accompanying the gift of a book), rich giclee prints, and available in any letter you choose (or letters, for rewards with more than 1 card).
There will also be single letter prints (8"x8"), also giclee prints, any letter(s) of your choice, they have a printed black "mat" - as seen above - and are suitable for framing.
Lastly there will be a poster that is 11"x17", also a giclee print, that includes the entire alphabet.
(There are photos of cards, prints, and the poster in the updates section.)
For those of you unfamiliar with the way Kickstarter works, it is an all or nothing proposition - if I don't meet my goal I receive none of the money pledged.
All the money raised (minus shipping and the fees incurred by using this platform) will go directly to cover the costs of printing and producing the books and rewards.
Risks and challenges
Everything is ready to go, is going already, in fact - the drawings are all finished and scanned, the green light has been given, and printing and bookbinding have begun. There is no question as to whether there will be books, the only question is if you will be part of this endeavor, and secure your own copy (or copies + swag).
While the books have fixed costs, the costs of the other rewards are dependent on the quantities ordered (and those orders won't be placed until this campaign is over), with significant discounts for larger amounts. However, this doesn't pose any risks to backers (although it made figuring out the budget rather more complicated) - the possible higher costs have been factored in, and if the campaign is successful enough to ensure the lower reward costs, extra items can be added to the reward packages.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
