About this project
InSomnia Online is a co-operative online role-playing game with tactical elements and unique game mechanics in a sophisticated universe designed with a dark retro-futuristic dieselpunk style, developed by indie Studio MONO.
InSomnia Online contains a universe of rich gameplay with constant upgrades, epic battles, stylized graphics combined with a feeling of abandonment and disorientation. Players should prepare for unexpected situations, nonlinear story structures and Easter eggs that reveal themselves sporadically. Only by staying in contact with your fellow players can you understand the full scope of what InSomnia has to offer.
RPG & Online elements of InSomnia project -The gameplay will be much closer to the classical RPG genre than most modern MMO projects. Players will be free to choose if they want to tackle the single player quest lines alone, or in co-op with two or three friends taking on the online PvP content, such as faction wars or global quest lines where more than 60 players could be taking part at any one moment.
The combat system in InSomnia is both real-time, as you’d expect in an online RPG, as well as including tactical elements. Success depends on intelligent skill distribution, clear role assignment within the group, keen reflexes and fast thinking to deal with unpredictable enemy activity.
Sandbox system Besides carefully crafted content, InSomnia also has procedurally-generated events, providing new Missions and Activities unique to that player’s experience. A comprehensive craft and equipment management system keeps equipment interesting and varied. Human-like artificial intelligence for NPC’s and environmental objects provide a deep challenge and immersion for players. All of these combine to provide a rich experience for players between official storylines that don’t just feel like “random” activities.
The plot of InSomnia Online is divided into Chapters. As players join, the ongoing story continues and is constantly updated. Characters created six months after launch will experience starting conditions different from those of a character who was created at launch. Events unfold in real time and will differ for everybody regardless of when they joined. Player choice may lead to points where players will be required to make difficult decisions that can affect the fate of their characters, their friends in the game, the ongoing story, or the world of InSomnia in general. Tired of MMORPG’s where your character doesn’t really change the world? Now you can, sometimes even if you don’t want to, so be careful!
InSomnia Online takes place on a gargantuan, half-deserted space station known as The Ark that is slowly making its way toward an elusive planet known only as the Evacuation Point. The Ark is inhabited by the descendants of the Nomans, a race of people who escaped their home planet several centuries earlier when it had become uninhabitable due to a cataclysmic conflict between the Republic of Noma and the SORG Regime. Most of the station has been abandoned and is now colloquially known by its inhabitants as The Dump.For the last 300 years, the Nomans have been living in the Manned Sector in fear of the SORG, the force that virtually wiped out Noman civilization. The only hope for the Nomans lies in the Evacuation Point, where they plan to start history again from scratch.
Players begin the game as a Noman with their character emerging from cryogenic sleep, trying to understand what happened on the Arc for the last twenty years as they meet other awakened colonists. Players are on a journey to the future, trying to understand the mistakes – and clues – from the past.
InSomnia Online is a game with a distinctive and singular feel. The writers crafted the unique world combining elements from Film Noir, retro-futurism, diesel-punk and the body of post-apocalypse literature. Add to the mix slick, believable characters, atmospheric locations, a pervading sense of foreboding and the unknown, and InSomnia becomes a distinctively interesting and sophisticated proposition.

We have worked hard to produce a great soundtrack for InSomnia. We understand that music is a powerful tool for creating tone and atmosphere, and while we have been inspired by such legendary contemporary composers as Hans Zimmer, Mark Morgan and Brian Eno, we didn’t want to mimic existing scores but instead wanted to produce something unique and distinctive to give InSomnia its own identity. -The development of InSomnia is by up-and-coming indie Studio MONO. MONO is a group of artists, technologists and enthusiasts united by a goal to create the vision of InSomnia. MONO feels that Triple A MMORPG’s all seem to be clones of several previously successful systems. MONO believes that the world wants an alternative, something unique, complex and challenging. With a team comprised of individuals from all over the world including Malaysia, the US, Russia, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Ukraine, MONO is a talented group united behind a single vision.
-IIn the world of videogames, financing for indie studios is an ongoing challenge. MONO has spent the last year building tools, samples, and honing our craft to develop skills as a team and crystallize the vision of InSomnia to enable us have something to show potential investors. Over the past 18 months we have been doing all of this fueled solely by our enthusiasm for the project and the chance to build something unique with each other. We’ve done a lot of work but now we’ve hit a wall where we need funds to continue further.
-Trying to secure funding from large investors and publishers for a game of this originality and cutting-edge design has proved impossible in the current risk-averse, sequel driven climate. Therefore our only remaining option is to turn to you – like- minded visionaries, gamers and fans – that can help us realize our dream by making this game a reality and to share in its success with us.
- $70k - Our primary goal is to raise money for development of the current game client up to a version one release which will be a fully playable version with all the basic content. Currently we are working on the first playable beta release version that is scheduled to be available for download in 2014. Releasing the beta to the public requires further QA testing, infrastructure upgrades at Studio MONO (InSomnia needs secure and robust hardware to provide the best gameplay experience), and continued optimization and enhancement. Right now, all of our personnel are working for free and using their own equipment, resources and tools, but it’s simply not enough to produce a game of this scope. At this basic level of funding we have allocated money to go to rental space for modest offices, additional hires in key skill areas, software and hardware upgrades, and to hire necessary legal, accounting and other project related personnel fundamental for a professional game company to function.
-We have already been working for a year and a half on the project and we are wholeheartedly committed to finishing what we’ve started. We are determined to make a truly outstanding game and to achieve this aim we need your support for the final push. Only with your backing will this project be realized in the form that is meant to be experienced.
- We need to rent an office - to enable the whole team to work together and discuss the project 24 hours a day. We need to build a workshop for our designers, sculptors and artists and a studio for shooting video.
- Software upgrade - we desperately need to improve our working machines to achieve the desired aim and increase the speed of development.
- Hiring new people - we have really good professionals who work with us, but we have a lot of other things to do as well. We need a much more professional environment to attract more top people to our already talented team. We need to pay lawyers, accountants, and sound designers among others. We also want this game to launch on Mac as well as PC meaning additional resources to adapt it.
- We are not asking for this money for ourselves - but instead for the hiring of new people, new hardware and for renting a big enough office space. To improve the development we need $70,000, which will enable us to produce a playable version of the game within a year.
- Getting an Online RPG up and running is not a simple task and isn’t done overnight. We intend to show that an indie studio such as Studio MONO can not only make a game on a par with those of a large-scale studio, but that our flexibility and rapid development can help set a standard for ALL indie game studios. We plan to hit the following milestones:- Step 1 - Forum creation: we will set up forums on our website and build a communication with backers and the wider gaming community to organize discussions of the main gameplay elements.

Risks and challenges
We knew going in to this project that it was ambitious, that it would be complicated and that there would be risks. But after seeing talented people from all over the world come together because of a shared passion and vision to form Studio MONO, and after we started generating code and content for InSomnia, we realized that with continued hard work and never losing sight of our goal, this wasn’t out of reach. We’re creating the game that we want to play because it currently doesn’t exist! And we hope you, a like-
minded visionary and passionate gamer looking for something new and fundamentally game-changing, also want to see it made so you can play it too.
We are in this for the long haul. We intend to make the game and see it released even if we have to do it all on our own, but we are hoping for help to make the journey much more smoother. The biggest problems with a project like this are trying to do all the work in people’s spare time, or programming on outdated consumer hardware, or not having access to professional help in key support areas. Acquiring funding will take care of those issues and allow us to solely focus on making InSomnia the best game it can possibly be.
