About this project
***Join us this evening for the - "Youth is the Truth Party"***
Our Vision & Mission
Appetite For Change is a North Minneapolis based, grassroots nonprofit organization using FOOD as a TOOL for building HEALTH, WEALTH and SOCIAL CHANGE. AFC is a social enterprise that hosts community cooking workshops, builds urban farms and engages community to build a community-based food system. Appetite For Change also owns and operates Kindred Kitchen a shared rental kitchen incubating food businesses and Breaking Bread Café & Catering, a real food restaurant employing and training Northside youth.
Community Cooks: Workshops
Based on a popular education model that brings people together to cook, eat, learn and discuss how food can be used as a tool for building health, wealth and social change. We have a youth group (ages 14-24) a pregnant and new mom group, a family group with people and children of all ages, and a preschooler group called Fresh Start Garden which integrates Community Cooks and a garden curriculum.
Fresh Corners: Urban Agriculture
We have our Appetite For Growing garden, a youth-led urban farm growing food for our workshops. Our Fresh Corners initiative focuses on building a local food system and promoting health equity. We are building the capacity of urban farmers in North Minneapolis while increasing access to fresh produce in corner stores, restaurants and other small vendors. We also aggregate and sell produce at the West Broadway Farmer’s Market.
Good Food Movement: Community Engagement
Appetite For Change is leading The Good Food Advocacy Campaign, and working with youth food-justice leaders called Food Ambassadors on food justice policy and advocacy. We are developing leaders through training and outreach activities that support their efforts to build a good food movement in North Minneapolis. We also reach community members through various events including Food Labs, health fairs and other tabling opportunities.
Kindred Kitchen: Food Business Incubation
Kindred Kitchen is a shared commissary kitchen open to small food businesses who are looking for a commercial kitchen to launch or grow their business. The state-of-the-art 2,000 square foot, fully-loaded, commercial kitchen is rented by local food businesses like food trucks, caterers and value added product producers. Kindred Kitchen offers classes and technical support for start-up businesses that are looking to grow their reach or just get going.
Michelle Horovitz, whose family are Northside natives, envisioned Appetite For Change in 2011. In 2012 when Michelle met Co-Founders Latasha Powell and Princess Titus, long-time North Minneapolis residents, together they created Community Cooks and actually asked the people what they wanted the organization to do. Together, these women co-founded Appetite For Change and built AFC with a commitment to being a community-based and led organization that helps people increase their capacity to build racial, economic and social equity through food.
Breaking Bread Cafe and Catering
Breaking Bread makes traditional southern dishes with international flavors to honor the diverse cultures of North Minneapolis. This global-comfort food restaurant and catering operation is a social enterprise that increases access to real food in an area that lacks wholesome and delicious food options. We are adding energy to West Broadway Avenue by providing a new gathering place for the community, jobs and training for local residents and confidence to other entrepreneurs who will become inspired to create new businesses in North Minneapolis.
Through Breaking Bread we're developing our youth employment and training program to compliment the existing training we offer North Minneapolis youth and adults at Appetite For Change. The funds raised through this campaign will help us hire more youth from North Minneapolis and provide job training, soft skills and other education that will prepare them for the working world and a career in culinary arts, or another field of interest.
We've taken our project to Kickstarter in order to raise the funds needed to develop the youth training program and to ensure it can thrive. The money raised will go towards hiring and training young people in the program, staff to lead training, equipment and supplies.
Kickstarter is the world’s largest funding platform for startups and creative projects and it operates as an all-or-nothing system. This means we have to reach our goal by the deadline or else we raise nothing.
We have a number of great rewards available through the campaign for those who make a pledge. It all starts with produce items from the cafe, either for yourself or as a pay-it-forward deal. We then have some cool swag like t-shirts and hoodies. Then for those who are able to give generously there are a number of dining experiences for you to enjoy, some of which are exclusive only to this campaign. Several of these rewards are limited though so if there's something that catches your eye we encourage you to act fast!
We also encourage everyone, whether you're able to make a pledge or not, to please tell your friends about us on Facebook and Twitter, and urge them to help keep the momentum going. We understand that not everyone is in the position to be able to make a financial contribution to our effort, yet a simple share with someone you know could provide a huge boost toward us reaching our goal. Together, we’ll make this happen!
Risks and challenges
Some of our incentives are dependent on availability of the restaurants that are providing unique culinary experiences. The chef's tables and other dining package incentives will need to be coordinated by the supporter and the individual chef or restuarant they are going to be dining with. The chefs will be flexible within their limits.
Our t-shirts, hoodies and seed packets will be ordered in time to ship them to out-of-state supporters in September. Those in MN can pay for shipping or come to the cafe to pick up their products.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
