About

The old adage goes that ‘the devil is in the details’ and here at Eight Eight we like to think that we live by those words. But for our very first collection we asked ourselves ‘precisely what details should we be focusing on?’

Inspired by modern artists and made with an unwavering commitment to production of the highest quality, we have put artists on pocket squares and pocket squares in all types of pockets.

“Every man's life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another.” - Ernest Hemingway

WHAT WE DO

We collaborate with artists, illustrators, and artisans to create limited edition pocket squares that are beautifully made and truly original. We're also committed to small scale manufacturing. This means we only make limited edition runs of each line. Once a line sells out, that’s it, it’s gone!

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

This is your chance to help us bring something to life through a proposed collaboration with Mathew Miller, a renown menswear illustrator who uses his deft watercolour skills to capture menswear style on the streets.

We will use your financial support to bring this pocket square to life, creating a unique and limited edition product in the process.

THE ILLUSTRATIONS

We consider ourselves as artists and makers of things. And as such, we love to work with other artists. We spend hours, days and months searching for like-minded creatives to translate ideas into striking and unique pocket squares.

We work with our artists, talk with them, discuss designs, throw around compositions. As many of our artists are new to fashion, we help guide them through the consideration required for successful printing; from colour selection and line thickness to, design density and fold considerations.

HAND PRINTED IN SYDNEY

All of our pocket squares are hand printed in Sydney at a small internationally renowned facility using digital techniques to ensure premium quality and clarity.

THE MATERIALS

Sustainably sourced and soft to the touch, we use both 100% 12mm silk and 100% bamboo cotton to create our pocket squares. For Mathew 'Sunflowerman' Miller, only silk will do. We have developed a collaborative relationship with our printer and they have helped us source sustainable A-grade silks from reputable manufacturers to ensure the highest standards of manufacture and ethics.

NEXT STEPS

If funded we will immediately put our pocket squares into production and print a run of 500 designs. We will then send to our tailors to hand roll stitch the edges. The finished product will be shipped to our backers as soon as we can.

Risks and challenges

Eight Eight launched at the tail end of 2017 with the website www.eighteight.store with nine designs created by seven different artists from four different countries.

The online reception was fantastic! We received high praise from notable men's fashion titles like GQ and Robb Report and continue to be featured in blog articles across the world.

Praise is great but as makers all we really care about are our products, our artists and our customers. By keeping our manufacturing local you can rest assured that we know what happens to our pocket squares along each and every step of the process.

From material sampling and print testing to digital printing and hand stitch finishing - we are well versed in making a great looking and feeling product. We truly ensure that the line is limited - numbering each and every product to ensure that only the correct amount are ever released to our customer base.

Unlike many Kickstarter campaigns, this is an simple (ish) product in manufacturing terms from an already operating brand. With the funds generated from this campaign, we will be able commission, design, test and ultimately print a whole new product line.

As this is a the first Kickstarter campaign for us, we are keeping the process simple, in fact we are replicating our usual operating practice but on a larger scale.

We have limited the amount of rewards we are offering as a protection against the possibility of growing out of hand at a level we feel confident in delivering to our backers.

The biggest risk we face is not delivering rewards on time. The testing process can take a little time to get right. Its important for us to make sure colours are bleeding correctly and that the finishing hits the high standard we set ourselves.

Ultimately everything we make is created by hand and so it can take a little longer to finish a few hundred items.
