The Dark Zodiac is a series of 12 cards compromising a new corrupted zodiac of my own fashion. I've printed a handful of sets and sold them at shows, but have been frequently asked to make a large run available, as well as a genuine interest in where it comes from. Since a full print shop has minimums required to print, round corners, and assemble the sets, that's why I'm putting together this campaign! They will be printed on a heavy linen paper so that there is a nice texture to the prints that will add to the rugged aesthetic of the set!
The Dark Zodiac was originally for a homebrewed D&D campaign that I ran with my friends. The world, Kicker's Bluff, was steeped in horror and the supernatural, so it made sense that their zodiac would represent that. I created the new constellations and new lore, as well as stat changes so that my players could pick what sign they were born under. This allowed me new ways to torment their characters, as well as giving them more ammo to figure out exactly who their characters were and what they've had to go through.
The whole point of the Dark Zodiac was to provide tools for more character development during the course of the game, as well as throw in some new obstacles. I've always wanted to compile together a guide in how to implement the lore into any game, as well as simply encourage it as a baseboard for people to make characters to and have a good time, so I'm very excited to be able to do this!
Since the Dark Zodiac was made specifically for Kicker's Bluff, I thought I'd provide a short blurb of what that means. Kicker's Bluff is a western, supernatural sci-fi setting where most planets are like the Wild West, with little law and hacked together technology in order to survive. They believe strongly in reincarnation, and instead of having normal deities, or angels or devils, they have Fortunes and Deaths. Fortunes are personified deities of good luck in different ways, though over time they have grown bored and corrupted, while the Deaths struggle to be in many places at once, tormented by the sheer volume of loss of life. For every Death that is overworked that cannot be present when you die, you are doomed to be fixed to the world in a half-state, miserable and haunted until you are properly put to rest. More information on the setting and the Zodiac will be included in the digital PDF!
Kicker's Bluff is a bit of a pet project of mine, and I would love to continue to fill out the gaps and make it a world that people could play in (D&D or otherwise!) , and I felt like the Dark Zodiac was the first and easiest step into it! I truly hope that you enjoy it, and even if you're not currently in a game, it can get you interested in one or you can simply see which of the Dark Zodiac applies to you!
Love you all, and may Fortune find you, or Death will!
Risks and challenges
The art is done, the printer has already delivered a quote, and I'm excited to get these out to everyone. All that remains is to get them printed and then shipped out.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
