Litelok Silver: The world's lightest secure bike lock
A premium, flexible, easy to use bike lock, made in Britain using cutting edge manufacturing & innovative materials
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Fri, November 2 2018 9:08 AM UTC +00:00.
"Litelok has set a new benchmark for Silver Sold Secure rated locks. Not only is it incredibly light and flexible, it looks great too!"
We have spent a significant amount of time talking to cyclists of all ages and bike experts about silver security standard bike locks.
They expressed their frustrations about how many locks on the market are heavy, inflexible, awkward to carry, tricky to use, rattle &/or corrode. This is because they use outdated designs and are mainly imported from factories who use cheap, low grade materials.
In response, we developed Litelok Silver, which addresses these problems and which also includes additional features that they requested to make the ultimate bike lock. Whether you're going for a casual ride to shops, cycling with friends and family or cycling to work, Litelok Silver is for you.
So, what makes Litelok Silver so special? Well, actually, quite a lot
Here's a summary of what we think makes Litelok Silver so special:
Litelok Silver is the world’s lightest Silver bike lock range ever made. Litelok Silver comes in three different sizes:
- 52cm (20.5 in) weighing 630g / 1.4 lb
- 70cm (27.5 in) weighing 730g / 1.6 lb
- 85cm (33.5 in) weighing 830g / 1.8 lb
Lock Mass Index (LMI)
As most locks have different lengths, we have created a new metric called the Lock Mass Index (LMI), which takes into account both the weight and length of a lock, enabling you to compare bike locks. The LMI is simply the weight of the lock in kilograms divided by the length (or circumference) in metres. The lower the LMI number the better.
Litelok Silver locks are 40-50% lighter than the average equivalent U/D locks, chains and armoured cables

Have you ever tried fitting a U/D lock around a tree or lamp post? You've probably tried it once and realised it's not possible. The flexibility of Litelok Silver gives you more places to lock your bike around than a rigid lock.
We only use independent accreditation bodies to verify the security of our locks.
Litelok Silver has been awarded a Silver rating by Sold Secure, the UK’s leading independent testing organisation, which is owned by the Master Locksmith’s Association.
Litelok Silver has undergone years of in-house testing. We’ve tested every common bike theft tool under the sun including simulating real life street theft attacks and under lab conditions using machines that can apply forces far greater than any human can.
Torsion (Twisting) Attack
It’s almost impossible to break a Litelok Silver through twisting it with a tool like a crowbar or tire iron. In fact it could cause serious injury to anyone who tries. As you turn the crowbar or tire iron in a Litelok Silver, energy builds up within the tensioned Boaflexicore material which will spring back and unwind rather violently if you let go.
In order to remove the elements of skill (and danger) we've constructed a torsion machine at our test facility to compare how Litelok Silver (right) performs in comparison to a best selling U/D lock (left).
56 handle rotations at the top = 1 'crowbar' turn at the lock
This torsion test rig has been developed with an engineering consultant and Swansea University College of Engineering - Prof Stephen Brown (Head of Engineering), Dr Nick Lavery and Dr Adam Philo.
Bolt Cropper Attack
Even with super sharp blades, bolt croppers will struggle to cut through the Boaflexicore strap. That’s because Boaflexicore is a composite which is a non-contiguous material, meaning it’s not the same solid material all the way through. Rigid D/U lock shackles and metal chain links, are susceptible to cutting attacks as thieves use bolt croppers to try to create a crack in the metal. Once a crack forms the fracture can easily grow and spread all the way through the material.
We've measured the bolt cropper resistance of Boaflexicore. It will take a cutting load of 148 kN (33,000 lb) - that’s equivalent to the weight of an F-18 Hornet fighter jet, focused through a sharp point. That's a lot!
Impact Attack - Freeze Spray, Hammer & Chisel
The lock housing is made from hardened aerospace steel alloy. If you know Thor, challenge him to break a Litelok Silver with his hammer, because we can’t.
Angle Grinder Attack
Given enough time, thieves can defeat all bike locks, especially when using portable angle grinders. However, we understand that less than 5% of thefts involve an angle grinder. To avoid any loss in the unfortunate event of a theft you can take out Litelok's Theft Protection and we will replace your stolen bike if its been secured with a Litelok, subject to terms & conditions.
You can carry Litelok Silver on your bike frame using high quality hook & loop WrapStraps; within your bag or panniers; or you can wear Litelok Silver around your body using our adjustable wearable kit.
As a special Kickstarter offer, all pledges for Litelok Silver 70 & Litelok Silver 85 come with a FREE adjustable Wearable Kit valued at £10. The Wearable Kit is reflective and designed to fit most ages, sexes and sizes. When worn around your waist it's barely noticeable.
Tip - Litelok Silver 70 may be more appropriate for riders with a waist size up to 38 in (96 cm). Litelok Silver 85 may be more appropriate for riders with waist sizes above 38 in (96 cm).
You can join two Litelok Silvers to make a double length lock or use them separately for double security. Both operate from the same set of unique keys. It's a unique feature that no other Sold Secure Silver lock has. They are a great option for couples or family members who want to use the same key.
Everything about Litelok Silver has been designed to make your cycling life easier. From clip-on accessories to hook and loop WrapStraps.
Our integrated design means that your lock is in one piece, so there's no faffing around trying to fix the parts together, unlike with many U/D locks and chains/padlocks.
Most locks use a horizontal locking arrangement meaning that you have to bend and crane your neck to see what's going on when locking and unlocking. With Litelok Silver, you just insert the key to lock / unlock and use the downward line of sight feature to open or close your lock.
When researching the ultimate bike lock, we discovered cyclists get really annoyed if their lock rattles in transit. Our unique tensioned design means that your lock will not rattle when being carried.
We pride ourselves on providing you, our customer, with the service and attention you deserve. With direct technical help and real people at the end of email and phones, we are here to help you enjoy your cycling life and to make your Litelok experience as trouble-free as we can.
Our engineering mission is driven by a desire to provide users with better quality products made from the best possible materials to deliver a better performance with more appropriate features that address cyclists' needs. Here's a little more detail:
We only use high quality materials in our premium bike locks to ensure they are robust and durable.
Our patented Boaflexicore strap contains a high tensile steel & complex polymer composite.
Our lock is made from hardened aerospace grade steel alloy - forged from molten metal at over 1700 degrees Centigrade.
Our locks have proven in-built drill protection to prevent attack via cordless drills. All of the internal parts of the mechanism are stainless steel.
The internals of our locks are pick proof and utilise a proven disc detainer mechanism.
We go to great lengths to test and check all materials and coatings to ensure they are weather resistant including systematic low temperature and salt spray testing on all of the lock parts.
All Liteloks are made in Britain at our high-tech factory in Wales

Risks and challenges
Can we deliver this project? Yes absolutely. We have a proven track record of delivering innovative products. We successfully launched our first product, Litelok Gold, on Kickstarter in 2015. Three years later we have tens of thousands of happy customers. Some still have their bikes because their Liteloks thwarted bike thieves, like these lovely people:
The product has passed Sold Secure Bicycle Silver and can be seen on their site here:
This is testament to the fact that we have surmounted the majority of product and technology related technical challenges.
There is a risk that we have technical issues when scaling up to volume production but we are used to overcoming these and our in-house engineering team has a wealth of experience and expertise across the aerospace, automotive, retail and cycling industries.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
