for today, it means yes- tumultus, o tumultus; relinquish your terrors and unbar your titans!
Three years ago, the first Pacific Arcana was made, bringing together over 50 artists to create a living breathing tarot deck based off the 2013 film Pacific Rim, and give back to the world around us.
Now, in 2018, we're doing it again with Pacific Arcana: Tumultus, with over 70 artists taking inspiration from the newest chapter in this cinematic universe of mechas, monsters, and the hearts that live among them.
In the footsteps of this deck's predecessor, Pacific Arcana: Tumultus will be a full-color, full-78 card tarot deck modeled and gleaned from the imagery, characters, robots, and colorful world of Pacific Rim Uprising. Able to be used for divination purposes, card games, or simply carrying around an encouraging piece of a favorite character wherever you go, Tumultus is designed to function as an actual world of tarot, rife with symbolism and intricate tie-ins to other cards throughout the deck.
Seeing these cards is all well and dandy, but do you sometimes think there's more to what meets the eye? Wondering about a specific bit of imagery that the artist put in, or why certain numbers seem to coincide? Each tarot has its own story in every card, and that story deserves sharing hand-in-hand with the imagery it houses and was given life to by its illustrator.
Much like Tumultus' precursor, there's a whole handbook to go with it.
Your companion to Tumultus' mythos, the paired Pacific Arcana: Tumultus handbook is a full color 132 page book elaborating more heavily on each card, from major to minor and every court in between. Packed with over 20,000 words of notes, card analysis, and film theory of the story and its characters, this book is orientated for both seasoned tarot readers, and newcomers to divination by way of giant robots and giant monsters.
Artist notes are also included on some pages, contributors explaining how and why they chose the symbols they did, what stories they wanted to tell, and what they saw in certain Uprising characters and motifs.
Don't want the physical copy? No problem- the book is available in either digital DRM-Free PDF format too!

Our printing budgets demand the most from both the deck and book printings, as well as a large well needed for shipping charges. The smaller rewards are cheaper to produce, but everything adds up!
If you were here for our first Kickstarter, you might notice our goal is a bit higher than the last time! You can thank rising costs of printing, different selection of sourcing materials, as well as rising postage prices! Besides, a more stable budget means we'll be able to contribute after everything is said and in print.
Speaking of contribute! All additional profits not used in the production and shipping fulfillment of Pacific Arcana: Tumultus will be given to the Lambert House: A Seattle based LGBTQ+ network providing housing, community enrichment, and HIV Prevention/Education, AND the Orca Conservancy, which "collaborates with some of the world’s top research institutions and environmental groups to address the most critical issues now facing wild orcas" and focuses their financial donations to supplementing research, orca trusts, education, enforcement, and salmon restoration.
**Pacific Arcana and Pacific Arcana: Tumultus is a not-for-profit production, and all artists have their own artistic claim and liberty to possess artwork of their produced pieces for individual resell. Pacific Arcana and Pacific Arcana: Tumultus are also not officially affiliated with Lambert House and Orca Conservancy (beyond eventual financial donation), and is merely a donor to the organizations.**
THE TAROT DECK
The entire deck! All 78 cards (plus one focuser, title card, and a brochure with full artistic credits and a link to download the digital PDF) will come included with a brochure of contributor credits and a QR code to download a digital copy of the Tumultus handbook. At 2.75x4.75" inches, these are cards that'll last any ranger a good while. This Kickstarter will be your only guaranteed chance to get a yourself a deck, as they are expensive to produce!
"Will you be able to reprint/can I get a copy of the first deck?" Good question!~ While we'd love to, unfortunately the costs between printing another deck on demand, the weight nearly tripling shipping expenses, and we'd rather money go to intended outlets.
The aforementioned handbook! At a perfect 8x8", this handy handbook will be your partner as it reveals to you unique spreads for Tumultus, hidden symbolism, and displays the cards in their full artistic glory.
4X6" STICKER SHEET
Designed by Vit (oceanyia) and featuring Tumultus' sigil, this sheet of five custom designed stickers features designs everything kaiju to refreshing Precursor beverage, and they're printed on tough material that will last both outdoors and matte coating.
6 POSTCARD PACK
If you get the handbook, some of this artwork from suit splash pages will look familiar to you! With four postcards inspired from the four suits of tarot, the postcards are symbolic summaries of each of the four jaeger teams/four royalty cards, and how they tie together with their assigned house. With Swords (Jess Mellen/stratdantro), Cups (Ric), Wands (Maria Buchman/Fishatar), and Pentacles (Fairy Floss), we also have two other postcards- one of menacing Precursors (Yakamen) that guides over the Secrets and Spreads section of the handbook, and a general postcard (Mittie Paul) of Tumultus that's found in the introduction splash.
STAR AND MOON ACRYLIC KEYCHAIN
Want to take Tumultus on the go and show off your love of tarot archetypes tied together by fate? Our double-sided charms (Al/littlebitterguy) will have holographic glitter embedded in the material, each piece 2" at their highest point and connected in the middle by a link (as any good Star and Moon are).
Traditionally used to keep in the energy of tarot decks and can function as a placemat for spreads, this 20x20" spreadcloth is custom screenprinted with durable, washable fabric that'll keep your cards safe (or be used as a tapestry)! Designed off the "Wheel of Fortune" motif of the Tumultus' card back, this cloth can not only help you focus, but is a great mat to ponder on tarot spreads.
ORIGINAL FIVE OF PENTACLES & NINE OF CUPS INKS BUNDLE
We're getting into owning original pieces of Pacific Arcana: Tumultus territory here! Artist behind the Five of Pentacles and Nine of Cups, Iris Jay brings us a tier that offers two whole 8.5x11" original inks for you to own! Packed with detail and trained in classical inking techniques, these originals aren't ones you wanna miss.
ORIGINAL "SEVEN OF CUPS" INKS
Our contributor Nero O'Reilly (also artist of the Sun) brings backers the possibility of owning the Debauch-laced Seven of Cups original inks! Not only do you get the full Tumultus rewards bundle, but coming in at a legal-sized bristol, this fine piece shows you how deep that emotional Debauchery can go.
ORIGINAL "FOUR OF PENTACLES" PAINTING
Our original painting tier is back, but with some new faces this time! The Four of Pentacles, rendered by contributor Mar Spragge (Parasitebeans, The Universe card), this painting has details in spades and symbolism that echoes with its smaller card counterpart.
The 10.5"x17.75" canvas will be mailed out in special packaging, with the other rewards sent out in their standard packaging from the editor.
While the nature of Tumultus is to give back as much as we've can, we've calculated to provide both some cool tarot enhancements and donate as much as possible to our chosen groups. All our goals are hinted at above, so keep watch on this progress bar to see how far we make it during Tumultus' campaign!

$25,000 -- SLIPCASES FOR EVERY TAROT DECK
Tuckboxes ARE pretty cool and all (and Tumultus' does look great all customized like that), but what if you had a box that slid open very gently looked the luxe part, too? With this stretch goal, the tuckbox is substituted for a slipcase- a two part box with the lid having a gentle slide-off to reveal the cards inside. All still custom printed with Tumultus colors, motifs, and imagery, this is the highest dream for our little (gold foiled too at this level!) tarot decks to rest in.
The Pacific Arcana project is spearheaded, written, and managed by Mia “Hye/explodinghye” Mardikian (twitter, portfolio)- a 25 year old queer Armenian graphic designer living in Seattle as a server by day and freelancer by night (they/she). Shepherd of micropress Fortuna Media, they edited and managed TABULA IDEM: A Queer Tarot Comic Anthology, the first Pacific Arcana, and co-edit the Almost Real: A Speculative Biology Zine series, but they also enjoy tea, tarot, and answering as many emails as possible in one day.
- To each and every single contributor: this breadth of this project would literally not exist without you, and no matter how many times I say it, I'll always be thankful for the chance to work with y'all, and you humble me and these pages with your works.
- To Guillermo del Toro, the cast, and crew in 2013 that gave this mecha kaiju sci-fi universe its beautiful inception.
- To Steven DeKnight, the cast, and crew who received that torch pass for Uprising, and brought their own delightful artistic visions and interpretations to this fledgling world.
- To the Pacific Rim fanbase, who saw and continues to see themselves in a world of titans and terrors as we go through our own lives: we're all in this giant robot together. You have given me and the contributors so much, and we pray this deck goes with you into that future of the unknown.
Risks and challenges

We're projecting to have everything shipped out in time for December, but there's always a risk of flukes or shipping errors.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
