It's been said that holding a tarot deck is similar to holding the universe. You journey through it, shuffle it, deal it, and scry cards on not only a personal level, but also a relevance level.
How fitting then, is it, to have a universe as rich, as colorful, and as beautiful as Pacific Rim translated into tarot?
Pacific Arcana's cards highlight the symbolism and roles of Pacific Rim’s characters, robots, kaijus, and other concepts and imagery into a full 78-card deck. The deck encompasses a wide variety of beautiful artwork crafted by talented artists who share an immense passion for this movie. Each card can be carried around as its own individual art piece, or the whole deck be used in full-fledged tarot activities and/or games, with characters, machines, monsters, and everything in between adhering to each Major and Minor Arcana’s role.
While most popular culture tarot decks can be gorgeous and left to the devices of the reader to interpret, their assignments are unclear and you can be left feeling a little confused. But each tarot has its own story in every card, and that story deserves sharing.
That's what makes this deck special; there's a whole handbook to go with it.
As is with Pacific Rim, there's a lot of symbolism to delve into and a whole world to cultivate. The complimenting Pacific Arcana handbook is a 128 page book explaining each role for each card, examining how each assignment fit with its archetype. New to tarot, perhaps? 8x8" paperback, you'll find out how to spreads, how cards relate to others in the deck, as well as each card splashed across the page in full view.
Artist's notes are also found on certain card pages, explaining symbolism they chose to include, allegories, or stories they wanted to tell about their cards.
Available in either soft-cover print or downloaded PDF format.
Our largest hurdles for funding are due to the fact we're printing both a tarot deck AND book, as well as shipping and other miscellaneous expenses making the project a reality. Smaller reward tiers aren't as lofty to produce, but it all adds up.
All additional not used in the production/product fulfillment of Pacific Arcana will be donated to Larkin Street Youth Services, a San Francisco-based organization that shelters homeless youth ages 12-24 with a welcome focus towards needing LGBTQIA minorities. They also specialize in providing medical care for Bay Area HIV+ youth, community activities, and mentally disabled young people treatment and/or healthcare. For more information regarding Larkin Street Youth services, you can find their page here.
**Pacific Arcana is a not-for-profit production, and all artists have their own copyright claim and liberty to re-sell artwork of their produced pieces. While Kickstarter does not allow for charity causes, this is a crowdfunding for real, tangible products, with excess profits not used in the production/shipping of the product donated after all due finances are exhausted. Pacific Arcana is also not officially affiliated with Larkin Street Youth Services (beyond eventual financial donation), and is merely a donator to the organization.
Pacific Arcana was organized, graphically edited, and written by graphic designer Mia Mardikian (explodinghye/MNM STUDIOS), a resident of the San Francisco peninsula area for almost four years now. She fell in love with the city right around the same time Pacific Rim came out, and while having previously studied at Academy of Art University, she currently maintains freelance graphic designing, as well as individual convention retail of illustrations or design projects (with Pacific Flush, a Pacific Rim styled poker deck, under her designing belt). While being generally familiar with cards and tarot structures, she studied months worth of tarot decks, peer reviews, books, and articles before any writing occurred as well as card assignments.
Special thanks to spacecores for being a great flatmate, alienfirst (organizer of Beyond the Breach) for being a helping hand with details, friend and author AK FEDEAU for helping edit and offer advice, and all the artists who gave their time for a universe they love so deeply.

The whole deck! Comes in a tuckbox with an 80 card count (78 illustrations with 2 filler cards) and a small booklet giving individual accreditation. The cards measure 2.75x4.75" and are printed on opaque smooth cardstock.
The Pacific Arcana Handbook! If you don't want the deck, this book will display all the cards as well as describe them in full detail. Available in either paperback or PDF digital download.
Kaiju Skull Stickers
A sticker sheet of four different kaiju skulls created by one of our contributors, PhantomSeptember! Measuring 4x6 and printed by StickerMule, these are high quality stickers that are durable and UV coated to weather the elements. The skulls are imagined from Knifehead, Trespasser, Mutavore, and Karloff.
Suit Portrait Postcards
Four postcards are dedicated to the Four Royal Houses of Swords (AffectionateTea), Cups (Geniusbee), Wands (Terriblenerd), and Pentacles (Hisiheyah); these images are symbolic suit summaries of each of the four jaeger teams/four royal court cards, and how they tie together with their designated suit. A special fifth postcard comes from Parasitebeans as a 4th-wall breaking scene (including hyper-detailed renditions of Pacific Arcana cards and design elements).
Screenprinted on durable, yet soft fabric, this 20"x20" spreadcloth will protect your cards from wear and tear as well as give your deck a solid surface (or used as a tapestry).
In tradition, spreadcloths are used to keep decks free of negative energy as well as kept clean and scratch-free. The design correlates similarly with the back of the card to emulate the Hermetic cross layout of elements. Included will also be instructions on how to wash, use, and tote your cards inside the spreadcloth.
Original Postcard Piece Painting
The ultimate reward for Pacific Arcana is a one-tier slot reserved for the original watercolor painting of the 4th-wall breaking scene apart of our postcard pack. Artist Parasitebeans rendered Pacific Arcana cards and designs in incredible high detail, as well as injecting symbolism and hidden secrets in this charming scene of a tarot spread between pilots. The 8.5"x12.125" canvas will be mailed out in special packaging, with the rewards sent out in their standard parcels.
ALL STRETCH GOALS NOW REACHED!
With our goal now out of the way and plenty of time to go, we've added stretch goals to strive towards! While these might not be the loftiest tiers, we've calculated what we can to provide both a stellar product and donate as much as possible to Larkin Street Youth Services. When each goal is reached, the next goal will be unveiled. But for now, a sample!
At $16,000 dollars, the five postcard pack will be given to every donation tier! (does not include the $5 tier). -- REACHED
UPDATE 10/05 -- WE'VE HIT $16K! All backers (minus the $5 PDF tier) will receive the five card poster pack. People who originally pledged to the higher tiers to get the postcard pack will still have the high quality sticker pack exclusively available to them as an extra thank you.
Our next goal at $18,000 will be higher quality books! While still paperback, they will be printed with higher quality paperstock, the cover matte instead of glossy, and other things to ensure your handbook and artwork inside it will last for the years to come. -- REACHED
UPDATE 10/14 -- WE'VE HIT $18K! With five days to go, all backers now will receive their handbooks printed on the highest quality material possible with a laminated matte cover. Still paperpack for traveling's sake.
Our next goal at $20,000 will be drawstring screenprinted tarot totebags! Some tarot readers prefer to carry their cards in soft, durable bags compared to their issued tuckboxes, and these bags will be compact yet comfortable enough to fit the cards in (and spreadcloth when folded in a small fashion). The bag itself will have the same center design featured on the spreadcloth, and all bags will be given to all pledges with tarot decks (including extra decks or more than one deck). -- REACHED
UPDATE 10/18 -- WE'VE HIT $20k! All those who pledged for a tarot deck (including multiples) will receive a drawstring bag to carry their cards in. Previews will come as product creation is done; I currently don't have access to the bags, but I will post what they will look like as soon as I have the materials.
Our next stretch goal is at $22,000, which are embossed tuckboxes for all pledged tarot decks! Printed at high gloss with UV protection, these tuckboxes will have gold-embossed designs and will generally last longer than the standard printed packaging. -- REACHED
If you support Pacific Arcana, we thank you for whatever you give and whatever reward you choose. By coming to this page, you already have some love for this universe; now you have the opportunity to hold and deal that universe in your hands.

Risks and challenges
All the artwork for the cards is compiled, and the book/postcards are ready to enter into print. The main hurdle will be shipping everything out and ensuring all is right in that realm. Decks are printed relatively quickly (in a timespan of 2-3 weeks), but the other reward tiers can take a while to produce (books taking the longest amount of time at 6-8 weeks, and another few weeks to ensure everything is shipped out).
There's always risk of setbacks when it comes to shipping items out, but we'll do our best to see all products are sent out in a timely manner. While December is the given time for the rewards ship-out, hopefully deliveries can begin by early/middle of November.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
