About this project

Hi. I'm Mike Pondsmith, head of R. Talsorian Games. You may remember us from our games like Castle Falkenstein, Teenagers from Outer Space, and, of course, Cyberpunk. And in case you haven't heard, with the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 video game, we're now back on the block in a big way.

But this time, I want to talk about Mekton.

Mekton was the first game I wrote professionally. I've always had a soft spot for Mekton, even more, believe it or not, than I do for the other game I'm more well known for, Cyberpunk.

Mekton was the first giant mecha game ever to come to the United States.

  • Back then, I had to teach a lot of people about a unknown Japanese concept and get everyone up to speed.

  • Now that anime is all over America, I can take the training wheels off Mekton.

What's Mekton Zero?

  • Mekton Zero is the RPG my friends and I used to play even before I published the original Mekton One. That's why I call it Mekton Zero, because it came before the published edition.

  • Set in original Mekton game world of Algol

  • A group of refugees from the ancient Bendari Empire established a colony on the edge of known space.

  • Now centuries later, rival factions fight with giant robots called Mekton for control of the planet.

WHAT'S GOING TO BE IN MEKTON ZERO

Mekton Zero is a “capstone” project for the already established Mekton Zeta and Zeta+ series. Its setting is the world of Algol (the original Mekton game world) and is fully compatible with the Mekton Zeta core books. M-Zero contains:

This is the Mekton I wanted to publish years ago. I've been looking forward to showing you what up to now, only a few people have had a chance to be part of. Adventure, combat, romance, politics, treachery, heroics, all wrapped up in tasty giant robotty goodness.

Concerning the Dice:

Hey everyone. It appears that some people have experienced confusion between Mekton Zero, and another successfully Kickstartered project, Mobile Frame Zero from Glyph Press. If you haven’t seen Mobile Frame Zero, you can check out their site at mobileframezero.com.

Risks and challenges

As we see it, risks are fairly low; we've been producing successful tabletop RPGs for over 30 years. So we know how to do it <GR>. Key (and reliable) artists have been lined up, primary writing and game design is already done and playtested, and is based on an existing game already sold worldwide for decades. Biggest danger is that an asteroid strikes Mike Pondsmith from orbit and stops him from completing this project. Mike's son Cody has sworn to avenge his father's death in this case and will finish the project even if the asteroid escapes.

FAQ

  • M Zero's build system is far less complex. Meks are built from a huge variety of templates, and are customized by filling "slots" with various weapons, abilities and options. There is a special system in place that means that meks of different design types are not only different from other meks, but also different from meks of the same type. It's more like building a human character (even a Mektonpath) --but designs from the original Zeta and Zeta Plus can be "ported" into the M Zero system very easily. In fact, we use Mekton Zeta to build the templates that are then "ported" to the M Zero system.

  • The system uses elements from both Interlock and Fuzion, but is it's own hybrid animal. Resolution is very much a Fuzion/interlock hybrid, while character creation is unique to this game. In particular, it's been designed to make sure you get a viable character every time without having to juggle a lot of numbers. Never fear though, Fuzion and Interlock characters will port over just fine. We'll post more on this in the next few days.

  • Not only will there be psionics, but one entire race is primarily psionic and will have access to psi-based mecha.

  • There will be multiforms, Roadstrikers and combiners. There will also be a new type of design called an Extended Frame Type (X-FT). The mecha of Algol will constantly be evolving throughout the "series" as the War heats up and new events unfold.

  • Yep. When I first came up with Algol, I imagined it to be as though a colony crash landed in the middle of the Age of Dinosaurs. Then I scaled it up a bit. Algol specializes in producing what we call Gigafauna--super huge and nasty creatures often armed with biological equivalents of acid, electrical and light emitting weapons. So when you leave the city, better be prepared to take on some pretty nasty customers!

  • "Have your character drawn" means both pilot and mecha, but the mecha will be rendered in a stock pose and will be one of the mecha types offered at the time. However, there will be a fair number of mecha to choose from (depending on the stretch goals we have planned).

  • Unit patches are actual patches that can be applied to your personal clothing. They evolved from a real life situation, when an actual US Navy fighter wing (and Mekton player group) decided to name itself the Night Hunters and had a special unit patch made up to wear on their flight suits. They sent us some as a gift, and we all decided that if we ever could do cool unit patches like that, we would wear them with pride (my personal flight jacket is covered in patches from SDF Macross and NASA missions)

  • The minis will be about 1.5 to 2" tall; the same size as the popular Gundam Collection 1/400 scale figs. A few years back, one of our figure makers did a test set of meks in that size and to my surprise, I discovered the scale was easier to store, assemble, paint and play with. The figs are actually about the same size as a 28mm gaming minis, which (I noticed) actually reinforced the sense of the mecha being the player's "character" on the board.   • Here's the way we're going to do it. You answer a quiz about the character that we email you. You email it back. Then you will get a drawing of your character. But (subject to our approval--as Cody says, "We can't do Mecha-Bondage Queen Aurelia here.") we will also draw the character into the background of one or more of the crowd scenes in the book art. The character is not credited (he or she is a "background character," but we're hoping that fans will decide they like some of the backgrounders and we will then look into promoting them into more of a main character status.

  • There are four 6 sided damage dice, connoting 4 levels of damage. Each damage level is a different color: Light (white), Serious (yellow), Severe (orange) and Critical (red). Then there's a 10 sided Elaran Faction die (blue with gold symbol) and a 10 sided Kargan Faction die (black with red symbol). A set is made up of all six dice; you need all four Damage dice since they work together, and the other two are for attack/defense resolution.
