JOY COMMUNITY FUN AMBITIOUS REVERENT & IRREVERENT are just some of the words that we associate with our collaborative project Wintery Songs in Eleventy Part Harmony! We, is Jennifer Kimball, Rose Polenzani, Laura Cortese, Rose Cousins, Jenna Moynihan, Valerie Thompson, Brittany Haas and Natalie Haas. In celebration of the sixth year of putting on our holiday show at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA, we are releasing HARK, our debut recording of 14 songs. We need your help to get HARK through production and out into the world! We'd love for it to fly a little further afield than Cambridge and Somerville and have a life on the radio, on the web, on social media, in YOUR lives!
BUDGET: We are hoping to raise $8,000 from this kickstarter campaign but our expenses are moving towards $11,000! All the funding we receive will go directly toward the following production costs -
- 3.5k recording
- 2k mixing & mastering
- 2k design & manufacturing
- .5k kickstarter video
Stretch Goals: photos ($300), tour support ($500-$1,000), music video ($1,000), website ($1,000), radio publicity/promotion - NPR ($1,000), manufacturing vinyl ($1000)
History & Songs: This project has come into being both from a deep love of winter songs and a deep love of singing together. One part secular, one sacred, the music has it's toes dipped in all kinds of genres from Celtic to classical, folk to pop, gregorian chant to indie rock. We are recreating the soundtrack for the season for ourselves and for our community - for YOU!
We've reharmonized and rearranged familiar songs like "Joy to the World," "Jingle Bells" and "The Holly and the Ivy," adding to this repertoire songs which talk about the cold and/or which just make us feel wintery like "Snow Days" by the band Real Estate, and "In the Cold, Cold Night" by Jack White. In addition there are new songs on HARK by Cortese, Kimball and Brittany Haas. Rose Polenzani's spare arrangement on glockenspiel for "Silent Night," sung by special guest Anais Mitchell, is magic. Natalie Haas's arrangement of three pieces from The Nutcracker Suite will knock your socks off - and it doesn't sound like the pops it sounds like the Haas sisters with Cortese & Thompson! We're not afraid to tackle classics and turn them upside down or segue right from hymns into jigs: "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" becomes a round, "Christmastime is Here" with "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" on top of it, "Winter Wonderland" reimagined in a minor key, "The Holly and the Ivy" morphs into "Life is Good Jig!"
Ladytime: You haven't quite heard these songs this way before! And yes, it's about collaboration and community, challenging ourselves, bringing out the best in each other. It's about girl time. And it's about coming together to do one of the things we love most in the world - to sing harmony together. We are so psyched to get this record out! And we hope you'll pledge to this campaign to help us do that!
How Does Kickstarter Work?
Kickstarter is a crowd-funding platform - which means YOU get to be involved on a personal level with the creation of HARK! EVERY contribution counts!
We are offering a plethora of rewards in return for your contribution! We'll be contacting you after the campaign closes to collect your address & any other pertinent information. All CDs/rewards will be shipped by Dec. 15 if not the moment the campaign is over! More photos of rewards:http://www.winterysongs.com/gallery/intro
Thank you for sharing your holiday with us - and for letting us share ours with you! We are deeply grateful to everyone who pledged their support for HARK by purchasing our 5-song EP last year - the precursor to HARK. And many thanks to Club Passim's Iguana Fund Music Grant which paid our first studio bill at Q Division!
Risks and challenges
Kickstarter is an all or nothing platform. If we don't reach our goal of $8,000 by the end of this two week campaign, we won't receive ANY of the funds, your credit cards won't be charged, no rewards will be sent out!! So please do spread the word!
Since HARK is a holiday record it really only has a short life right before Christmas! So getting the word out is critical. Most of us aren't interested in holiday music after Dec. 25. So we are super motivated to bring you this music now! We are all highly-accomplished touring musicians. And we are psyched to have new music to sell on our own tours as well as the HARK tour Dec.15-20. See you out there!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
