About this project
***Our Cases will fit the 5S perfectly!!!****
“Very elegant design” - PhonesReview.com
“You might think that such a breakthrough would cost the earth, but the Salt Case range is reasonable and at the moment, they can be pre-ordered at a discount too!” -TechMash
“As someone who hates carrying a wallet, the Salt Case provides both protection for my iPhone as well as a place to keep my over-used credit cards and I.D.” -Chew the dirt
“Thanks to that and the company's Saltbloc thermal layering technology, Salt cases successfully tackle the mechanics of heat transfer: radiation, convection and conduction. They look pretty stylish as well, we must add.” - PhoneArena
“These cases really mean business but also look attractive.” - UK-Phone-Review
Let's start with a bit of background...
When a smart phone, tablet, or laptop is exposed to extreme temperatures (more than 95 degrees and less than 32 degrees) or used in direct sunlight, the device will malfunction and often becomes unusable until the temperature is regulated. The device's battery life can also be shortened. Currently, the only way to prevent this problem is to avoid using portable electronic devices in these environmental conditions.
After experiencing an overheated phone in the car and at the beach, and a frozen phone at the top of a ski lift, we went looking for a product that would prevent this from happening -- but our search left us empty-handed. So we decided to be the solution.
The Salt Cases Solution: NASA Technology in Your Pocket
Salt Cases is the first and only company to offer protection from extreme heat and cold for your portable electronic devices.
The patent-pending, thermally protective cases are inspired by NASA technology. For decades, NASA has protected its spacecraft from extreme heat during launches and extreme cold in outer space using a thermally protective shield. We've embedded the same material used by NASA in each of our cases. Our technology is even certified by the Space Foundation.
Inspired by NASA’s development of thermally protective materials for its space craft, we’ve been able to combine some of these materials to make our patent-pending, space technology certified cases.
But how does it work?
In order to combat heat and cold, each case has "Saltbloc ™," our patent-pending thermal layering technology. It successfully tackles the mechanics of heat transfer: radiation, convection and conduction.
The first layer works by redirecting infrared energy (a fancy word for heat) away from the case when it's baking in the sun. Conversely, it helps maintain the device's starting temperature by refracting its heat energy back to itself in a cold weather situation (aka a passive warming system.)
By combining this first layer with additional insulative layers, we’ve also limited the other mechanics of heat transfer i.e. convection/ conduction (the transfer of heat or cold between objects).

Timeless Style Meets Modern Technology
While researching protective iPhone cases, we noticed the cases on the market offer either protection or fashion -- never both. We've designed a sleek, attractive iPhone case featuring genuine leather and an interior wallet. Not only does it protect your iPhone from extreme temperatures, it protects it from every day mishaps like fumbles, too. Salt Cases currently come in five classic colors: red, green, tan, brown and black.
Below: One of our first prototypes and some ideation sketches
- Thermal protection (extreme heat and cold)
- Screen protection
- Shock absorption
- Genuine leather strap and trim
- Interior wallet with secure zipper pocket
- Easy magnetic closure
We've been working very closely with our manufacturing partner throughout the process from ideation all the way to our current state. We’ve developed a personal relationship with Rachel and her sewing team that affords us an open dialogue to co-create and refine together. It's taken two years and numerous prototypes for us to get to this point, but we all agree the level of craftsmanship, select materials, and timeless style speak for themselves. We’re all proud to offer you a product that really works and looks good while doing so.
At this point, we’ve received our pre-production samples from Rachel’s team and placed the order for a limited quantity first production run.
The samples are scheduled to arrive in September 2013 and delivered to you immediately following. However, we need your pledge support to raise capital to pay the remaining balance.

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge for a start-up company designing accessories for
Apple products is the probability that Apple will introduce an updated
product with new dimensions. This, of course, would mean that our
products need to be scaled and redesigned accordingly. However, Salt
Cases has weighed this risk and to overcome it, the company has
aligned its product launch calendar with Apple's typical release
Yes, there is an opening for the camera and flash and neither is obstructed by the case.
No, the zipper does not touch the screen at all. We designed the low-profile zipper to be sewn into the binding, and it tucks into the binding when folded. Although the zipper looks long, it does not crest over the edge of the injection molded holder. It is completely unable to touch the screen what so ever. We made sure it was sewn into the binding with a low profile and tucks into the binding when folded.
