UPDATE - 9/20/15:
EPISODES SIX AND SEVEN ARE FUNDED! We're on our final push to make a full EIGHT episode season -- $1,500 away, we're so close!
So keep the contributions coming and help us make the first season great!
Fridays is a web series about best friends Kate and Michael, who live in Los Angeles and have just undergone huge life changes: Kate is newly married and Michael is newly single.
The main characters are deaf and communicate in American Signed Language (ASL), with subtitles for people who don’t know sign language. Kate and Michael are two deaf people who live in a hearing world, to comic, tragic, painfully funny, and joyous results.
Whether it is issues of love, money, or ordering a latte at Starbucks, Kate and Michael are two people you've never quite met before, and you'll love getting to know them. Stars and co-creators Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman are deaf. They also wrote and directed the pilot.
SHOSHANNAH STERN - ACTOR, CO-CREATOR
Shoshannah is an award nominated actress best known for her roles on the Emmy Award winning series Weeds, cult hit Jericho, Lie To Me, ER, Cold Case, and The Division. Stern counts among her film credits Adventures of Power, The Hammer, and No Ordinary Hero. She also has extensive stage experience, having starred in Children of a Lesser God and Open Window.
JOSH FELDMAN - ACTOR, CO-CREATOR
Josh is a writer who won a Young Playwrights Award from Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., and has had his work published in online publications as well as in Hustler magazine.
NICK FASCITELLI - PRODUCER
Nick's encyclopedic knowledge of Cheers got him a job with one of its former Executive Producers at TBS's Sullivan and Son. There he eventually worked his way up to his own script, and when the show was (sadly) canceled, he moved on to TV Land's The Exes. And then that was also canceled. Currently Nick is the Script Coordinator at the Netflix Full House reboot, where every Friday (!) he is allowed to make eye contact with John Stamos.
OUR GOAL & STRETCH GOALS
We pinched a lot of pennies and called in a lot of favors to make the pilot episode guerilla-style. But we need the support of our audience to continue making more episodes.
We've set our initial goal at $6,000 -- with camera, sound, lighting, crew, and food, we can make four more episodes, and at a production quality higher than we've made so far.
However, we don't want to stop there. If we surpass our goal, we can grow the size of our season, with an additional episode for every extra $1,500 raised:
REACHED! $6,000 raised: INITIAL FOUR EPISODE SEASON
REACHED! $7,500 raised: 1st BONUS EPISODE! (With Pilot, 6 total)
REACHED! $9,000 raised: 2nd BONUS EPISODE! (With Pilot, 7 total)
$10,500 raised: 3rd BONUS EPISODE! (With Pilot, 8 total!)
Risks and challenges
Our web series faces the usual dangers and risks of film and television production: What if we get the money from Kickstarter the same day aliens land on Earth and say they're going to blow it up in two days? (Bonus points if you get that reference!) What if pigs start flying? What if ABC reboots My So Called Life?
We're human, but we're very efficient humans (or so we'd like to think). With a core team in place: the two creators/writers, Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman, and a producer, Nick Fascitelli, we are sure to be able to figure out whatever is thrown our way. It also helps the creators/writers also portray the main characters, so, you know, they're sure to be in the episodes they write.
We don't foresee online distribution as being a challenge, as we don't plan to charge people to watch the episodes we produce. We will be sure to make sure we keep in touch with all our backers with regular updates, so you'll be the first to know about what's going on.
