About

Why start this Kickstarter?

I have started this Kickstarter to promote some of the finest leather you'll find in the world, alongside my skills as a craftsman and the traditional methods used to make my handmade belts.

The proceeds from this Kickstarter will help me purchase some letter embossing stamps, a logo stamp and more leather for new projects I have planned like wallets, notebook covers and laptop covers.

(I'd also like to help my backers be the best dressed backers in the history of Kickstarter!)

What's your process for making belts?

The first step is to contact the purchaser and find out how long their belt needs to be. This is a very important step... the measurement must be taken from a belt which is worn regularly. I cannot accept a measurement taken from other clothing garments. At this point I also take their preferences for belt and buckle colour.

I then start hand cutting the belt and belt loop from a Bridle Butt, cut the classic belt end shape and punch the holes for the belt buckle and belt holes. The next step is to bevel and dye the edges of the belt. I do not believe in using rivets in my leather belts, so unlike some leather belt manufacturers I take the time to stitch the belt loop into the belt; this means the belt loop is secure and will not move or work loose.

The final few steps are to burnish the edges to a lovely rounded style and apply a finishing coat of leather feed to the belt. A good buff with plenty of elbow grease and the belt is ready with the glorious lustre that English Bridle leather is known for.

All this work is done by hand; I do not use any electric tools in my work.

Tell me about the materials...

English Bridle leather takes its name from the original purpose of the leather - the straps and reigns for a horse. This usage means the leather has to be durable and strong for the rider whilst also being comfortable and supple for the horse to wear.

English Bridle leather is made from vegatable tanned leather. The process of making vegetable tanned English Bridle leather is manually intensive and takes a lot of practice and knowledge; it really is a job for skilled artisans. After the leather has been dyed, the surface is greased with a blend of tallows and oils which are buffed to create the distinctive polished finish that English Bridle leather is famous for.

The belt

These belts are made using English Bridle leather and are available in black, Dark Havana (a luscious dark brown) or Australian Nut (a brown colour with a hint of red - definitely my favourite colour). The buckles are from a foundry in Walsall, UK and are available in stainless steel or brass.

  • Width: 1.5"
  • Length: made to measure
  • Colours: Dark Havana (a dark brown colour), Austrailian Nut (a lovely brown tinged with a small amount of red – a really lovely colour) and Black
  • Buckle: Brass, stainless steel
  • Holes: There are 9 holes, with 22mm centres. The first hole is 50mm from the end of the belt. Holes are punched with a circular shape.

I'm not sure who said it, but I feel the quote "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" sums up my belts perfectly.

The keyring

The keyring shipped with Pledge #2, #4, #6 is made from a finest quality vegetable tanned leather from a region in Italy with a rich history of leather work and tanning. The keyring's total length is approximately 8cm, the split ring is 3.5cm diameter and the leather width is 2cm. It will be in a chestnut or black colour, whichever you prefer.

A final word about my work...

I love creating with my hands and in this world of mass produced, low quality goods, it's such a pleasure to create leather items that last well beyond the lifetime of off-the-shelf products.

Each leather item I make is hand cut, hand stitched, hand finished and handmade in England.

I look forward to hearing from you with any questions, comments or pledges.

Kind regards,

Matt

Risks and challenges

You might see a couple of risks associated with this Kickstarter;

Risk 1.
I cannot source enough materials to complete all the required belts.

Risk 1 mitigation.
I have a good relationship with the tannery and foundry I do not expect there to be any issues or delays with the required materials.

Risk 2.
There are too many orders for me to complete all the required belts.

Risk 2 mitigation.
I have been making belts for a long time and I know how long it takes me to make each belt. I am no stranger to hard work and am driven by challenges and customer satisfaction; I have no expectation that I will not be able to complete all the required belts.

Once the Kickstarter has finished and I have received the funds, I will start to make the belts. I expect to have them all dispatched within 1 month. If there any delays, I will of course let you know.
