Remember your childhood days and reminisce about the joy and happiness you felt playing outside with friends. Remember the excitement of discovering a new game — uncovering its strategies and competing against your companions.
Playing outdoors is an important part of childhood. Usually, kids play the games that are popular in their own country. But what if they could learn new games from other countries?
Pick Me! celebrates the diversity of folk games from around the world.
It's a deck of foldable cards that showcases 15 popular folk games from various countries for kids aged 8-12.
How does Pick Me! work?
Each game is explained using a simple narrative and beautiful illustrations, which makes it easy for kids to understand. The illustrations are done by artist and my friend, Shreya Sen.
Unfolding a game introduces the main characters of the story, who take the kids through a journey of learning the game. They explain what items will be required, how to set up the playing area, how teams will be formed, and finally how the game is played.
What's so special?
- The size of the folded card is just a little bigger than a credit card. So kids can carry it easily in their pockets.
- As each game has its separate card, kids can share and lend the individual game cards among their friends.
- When the card folds out like a map, it allows all the kids playing the game to look at it and understand the game as a group, making everyone feel inclusive.
- Each game includes prompts to encourage kids to make their own variants of the games. After all, it's always more fun to play a game that YOU have created!!!
- The games don't need any additional gear to play. Common household items like balls, ropes, or sticks are all you need.
How did I select the games?
My goal in selecting the games was to keep them interesting and challenging for kids with different needs. The deck includes solo and multiplayer games, even games for large groups, and both indoor and outdoor games.
Here are the games I am currently planning to add:
- Daria Bandha........Bangladesh
- Hummam Kubbe....Turkey
- O an quan.............Vietnam
- Oonch Neech........Pakistan
- Scotland Yard........England
- Stone Toss............Lebanon
- Three Tins.............South Africa
Who are we?

Why am I doing this?
As a kid, I was obsessed with games, and was constantly seeking new games to play. I often wondered, what games do kids in other countries play? The older I grew, the more I learned about super-fun games from a lot of countries. And now I want to share them with all the kids.
There are also less direct goals that I aim to achieve. Introducing kids to games from around the world, through characters from those places, can teach them compassion. I believe this is becoming increasingly relevant in the divided society that we see today. Furthermore, we are entering an era where digital games are easy to find by the thousands, but it is much harder to find novel physical games. Through this kickstarter, I also aim to promote physical games in this digital era.
I need your help!
I am running this campaign to get enough funding to take this idea from prototype to production. Your pledges will mainly fund the production costs: the cost of new illustrations, fonts, printing, and packaging. If you remember how much fun it was to play your favorite games as a kid, and you want to share those special moments with your kids or others, help fund my campaign. If you know people that feel the same way, share it with them!
Risks and challenges
I have spent the last few months outlining the details of material, printing, packaging, and the involved costs. But in the real world, unforeseen manufacturing problems may still come up. This may delay the timeline for delivery, but there is probably enough cushion in the current estimate to account for that.
As I go through the process of receiving additional feedback and incorporating it to make the product better, a couple of things may change: the collection of games may change a bit to make the combination more interesting, and the design of the cards (size, shape, graphic) may also be refined. Rest assured, this will only be to make the final product more interesting and fun!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
