The Mysteries of the Canopic Jars - free card decks!
What are the Canopic Jars?
The Scions of the Sands, as a Faction, feature a unique mechanic in Twisted: the Canopic Jars. Each Box Set of Scions of the Sands miniatures comes with 10 FREE unique Canopic Jar cards, a total of 20 between the two sets!
Each living Character in the Scions of the Sands carries a Canopic Jar, taken from the Temple of Set discovered by Carter. These jars are used as conduits to a kind of Spirit Pool, containing the disembodied souls of Ancient Egyptians. Accessing these spirits can bring great benefits such as increased Characteristics and additional Special Abilities.
This does not come without risk however, as the spirits of the dead do not lightly give up their chance to live again, even as a kind of parasitic entity.
When accessing a spirit through the Canopic Jar your Character is also influenced by the personality within, causing a change in the way they act. Furthermore, if a Character remains connected to a jar for too long the spirit may come to Dominate, its personality entangling with that of the host and the ancient spirit coming to the fore in a much more distinct way.

A Canopic Jar Card
Here is an example Canopic Jar Card. This spirit is Pawura, Chief of the Archers.
Each card explains all its spirit's effects in a game of Twisted, with full rules for their use contained in the new additional digital rulebook that will be available to you for free once we have shipped the Wave 2 rewards.
The Canopic Jar cards are kept shuffled face down in a deck on the tabletop. When a Character chooses to access the Spirit Pool you turn over the top card, revealing the spirit your Character has accessed through the jar.
Once drawn you must try to access the jar. Gaining access requires a D20 check with the Difficulty and relevant Characteristic shown on the card. In the above example Pawura card, this is a Difficulty 11 Finesse Check meaning you must equal or beat this number by rolling a D20 and adding your Character's Finesse Characteristic. If you fail, you do not connect with the spirit and the card is placed back in the deck. Beware of rolling a 1 however, as a critical fail can be rather unpleasant for your Character!
In the example card above, successful access of Pawura makes the host Character faster and a much better shot with a massive +3 bonus Ranged Attack. You can see there are also three Special Abilities listed. Just after the Abilities heading there is a number in brackets: for Pawura this is a (1) which means the host Character may select one of the three Special Abilities shown. In some cases the spirit provides more than one Special Ability, a great boon indeed!
Pawura is an arrogant and proud man however and, when accessed, his personality comes to affect the host. While he provides the great bonus to Ranged Attack, his Spirit Influence means that his host will always select the most distant available target as Pawura boastfully shows off his prowess. This means you must consider this Spirit Influence when making tactical decisions during the game.
You can also see a Dominance figure listed on the example card above. Each turn in the Maintenance Phase you must roll a D20, adding the relevant Characteristic. If you do not equal or beat this number the spirit Dominates you. The longer you remain connected to the jar the harder it is to avoid Dominance. On the card are small check boxes; you must tick off a box each turn you remain connected to the canopic jar. Below the check boxes are small numbers - these are penalties to the Dominance check which progressively increase. If you remain connected to the jar until the last red check box, then your Character is automatically Dominated!
The effects of Dominance are listed underneath the check boxes. In the example above, the Character may not accept aid from any other Character as Pawura's true hubris comes to the fore. This includes all bonuses for outnumbering and flanking in Close Combat or any beneficial effect from an Alchemantic Invocation!
Once you are Dominated disconnecting from a Canopic Jar becomes more difficult, requiring a check.
The Scions of the Sands are now available through the Pledge Manager - log in and add them if you like the sound of this mechanic. It brings a new level of intrigue and tactical challenge to your games of Twisted.
