About this project
DREAMS OF DYSTOPIA:
The Post Apocalyptic Deckbuilding Game with a TWIST!
Dreams of Dystopia is a deck building game for 2-4 players and has been reviewed by many of today's top sites and pros such as: Board Game Brawl, Undead Viking, Dad's Gaming Addiction, and many others. A game that combines the unique aspects of double sided cards, stunning art, and attacking play.
Based in a world gone awry. The lone standout, a town called "Heaven" in a world that has gone to Hell.
What makes Dreams of Dystopia so Unique:
Though individually some of these aspects may be applied in other deck builders, it is the combination of these rarely used aspects when combined with the small adjustment to play that sleeving brings that makes this game quite unique in the deck building genre.
The first thing to mention which makes Dystopia standout from the "Norm" in the deck building genre is double-sided cards. In Dreams of Dystopia, each card has two alternative sides. One side depicting the "Divine", and the other the "Demonic". It is up to you to decide! Once chosen, your Master's alignment will determine how the rest of your game will be played. However beware, one can acquire "off-alignment cards" and change their allegiance. The choosing of sides as well as mid-game reversal of cards from Divine to Demonic is an integral part of mechanics for play.
Second is the "Attack" Win Conditions. Dreams of Dystopia is not the usual victory point taking. Instead, the goal is to reduce your opponents Masters life points to zero before they can do the same to you. It will be Minion versus Minion and Player versus Player combat. Again not the "norm" among deck builders.
Lastly would be the Resource Systems. Instead of buying new cards with coins or currency, in Dreams of Dystopia, over the course of the game you will increase your "Fame" from 0 to 20 by means of Heroic Deeds. As your fame increases, you will be able to recruit ever stronger Minions.
You can hear for yourselves the great reviews given in the videos provided below by some of the top pros and sites in gaming, as well as get an extensive look at the game and our unique brand of play.
For a brief overview of how a game of Dreams of Dystopia is played, please watch the below video done by Board to Death TV:
For an in-depth view into how Dreams of Dystopia works including some highly enthusiastic feedback on the game we recommend you watch this video preview here:
Thank you so much Nick of Board Game Brawl!!

The Card Types: Divine or Demonic - The Choice is Yours!
You are facing a choice of sides at the very beginning of the game, upon choosing one out of 6 different "Masters", who will act as your avatars in the game. Each of them has a Divine and a Demonic side and your initial choice will greatly pre-determine the how you will be building your deck over the course of the game, which strategies you will be trying to pursue etc. etc. Here some sample Masters for you, with the Demonic version on the left and the Divine "incarnation" on the right:
Over the course of the game, you will be recruiting (buying from a central supply of cards) "Minions" that can be used in 3 different ways and also come as double sided cards. Here are a few samples of the 16 different Minions included in the game:
Lastly, the game includes 8 different "Weapon" cards, again each with a Divine and a Demonic side with different or alternating effects. These are used to boost your Minion during combat and/or give them additional abilities. Please take a look at some of the Weapons:
For a comprehensive spoiler of all Master, Minion and Weapon card previews please do have a look here!
Besides the Masters, Minions and Weapons, the game will include an abundance of Curse cards (basically dead cards in your hand) and Heroic Deed cards (which increase your Fame - the more Fame you have the more powerful Minions you will be able to recruit).
The double-sided cards, choosing which side of them to use in your deck and the flipping/reversing of cards mid-game plays a huge role in the Dreams of Dystopia gameplay, up to a point that you can, over the course of one game, completely turn around your deck from Divine to Demonic or vice versa if strategically wise. Due to the nature of the game and the double-sided cards as well as the flipping, an abundance of opaque plastic card sleeves are needed for many more or less obvious purposes. But fear not, each pack of Dreams of Dystopia will come with 200 card sleeves included (enough to cater to up to 4 players) provided by our trusted supplier
so you will not have to go through the trouble of purchasing sleeves separately.
The Flow of the Game:
Like in any Deckbuilding Game each player, after having chosen a Master and side of said Master (Divine or Demonic), starts with a small, identical Starting Deck, which can and will be enhanced, added to, tuned and streamlined over the course of the game by buying new cards from a central supply of available cards. Furthermore, each player draws a starting hand of 5 cards from their 10 card starting deck. Here is what the latter would look like:
So yes, in every game of Dreams of Dystopia you are "cursed" from the very beginning, and getting rid of your initial 4 Curses is quite vital to a well working Deck. Basically each turn in Dreams of Dystopia goes like this. By default you have...
- 1 Ability: Each Minion can be discarded for its Ability effect.
- 1 Combat: Discard a Minion to attack your opponent's Master
- 1 Heroic Deed: Discard 1 Heroic Deed to increase your Fame by 1
- 1 Acquisition: "Buy" a card from the Supply. This ends the turn.
Bought cards will go to your Discard Pile and at the end of your turn you will always discard all remaining cards in your hand and draw 5 new ones. And this is basically it. Through enhancing your Deck and constantly increasing your Fame to buy ever more powerful Minions who will be able to use increasingly mighty Weapons, you will be trying to reduce the Life Points of your opponents' Masters to zero. Obviously, there will be many cards that let you draw additional cards, have special abilities and will grant you additional Abilities, Combats, Heroic Deed plays and Acquisitions. Through cleverly assembling, enhancing and fine-tuning your Deck, following countless different strategies and involving lots and lots of tactical decisions, you will strive to be the "Last Man Standing" in the epic struggle for dominance in the unforgiving, post apocalyptic world of Dreams of Dystopia!
For a comprehensive insight into the inner workings (game rules) of DoD, please read the full rules document to be found here. (Please excuse typos - the rules booklet is still in a rough state, although the actual rules and mechanics stand firm as they are now!).
Upon popular request, here a playthrough video (about 16 Minutes) of Dreams of Dystopia, kindly done by clawlan of Left Hand Reviews. Please note that they were using a prototype copy with the Weapon cards being oriented sideways. Apart from that the game is the same as advertised on this very Kickstarter campaign. So here it is:
Here, for your amusement and visual pleasure some photos taken in our very first test session with a more than decent looking Dreams of Dystopia prototype Version 0.1:
(You can even spot the mad designer in the little slideshow above - none other than the menacing looking guy in the blue shirt!)
Stunning Artwork Creates a Unique and Immersive World:
Dreams of Dystopia was brilliantly illustrated by one highly talented artist, Robert "Misfit" Modelski, hailing from Chicago, Illinois, who managed to create a truly unique look and feel for a game set in a (post-) apocalyptic world where the last remnants of the human race struggle, with the aid of Divine beings, against the ever-growing, Demonic forces of darkness and evil. Please have a look at some artworks taken right out of the game that truly qualify as "eye-candy":
What will you get for your pledge:
Here is the Visual Guide to our Pledge Reward Levels:
One copy of Dreams of Dystopia is intended for up to 4 players and contains no less than 374 high quality, double-sided playing cards. There will be 6 different Masters, 16 different Minions and 8 different Weapons plus an ample number of Curse and Heroic Deed cards, all well suited to support up to 4 players. Please do note that due to the double-sided cards concept, the number of different cards actually doubles, so you will have not 16 but in fact an impressive 32 different Minions at your disposal for instance, effectually doubling the card pool without actually increasing the card count. Asides from the cards, you will get 4 red 20-sided dice to keep track of Master Life Points as well as 4 blue 20-sided dice to keep track of your Heroes current Fame (so 1 red and 1 blue dice per player). A proper rules manual will obviously be included as well and as mentioned before, you need not worry about buying your own sleeves as we will be including 200 high quality MAYDAY GAMES card sleeves (one player will need no more than 50 such sleeves). All will come in one neat, sturdy cardboard box holding all the components, including the 200 sleeves, comfortably.
Please note that this product will be printed and manufactured "clean and green" by
from Orlando, Florida - so in the United States of America.
We do apologize to potential European and other non-North-American backers for not being able to offer you the game at all. Our hands are tied here and we are terribly sorry but we do not ship to outside of the United States of America, except to destinations in Canada, since, unfortunately, the shipping would be higher than the cost of the actual game. Please accept our humble apologies for all that. But never fear, publishers in the EU are already interested in picking up Dreams of Dystopia so odds are in favor of you eventually getting your copy of the game through other channels!
Immortalize Yourself - A Once In A Lifetime Opportunity:
We are immensely pleased to offer you a VERY special backer reward...
That is right: If you decide to back at the "Immortal Master" or "Supreme Immortal Master" pledge levels you will not only receive a copy of the game DoD Deckbuilding Game and the DoD Customizable Card Game Intro Pack, but also, our highly talented artist Rob "Misfit" Modelski will be factually immortalizing you by painting your likeness on a Master card (guided by your instructions and ideas if desired) that will be included as an extra Master card in every copy of Dreams of Dystopia (If backing on the "Supreme Immortal Master" Level). Also you may consider this as the ultimate surprise gift for a dear gamer friend or a loved one or family member who is into games!
"Where does my Money go?"
Well, definitely not into any of our pockets. The base Pledge of $45 USD is cut sharp as a razor and allows for no noteworthy profit margins for us at all.
Due to the double sided cards along with the added expense of 200 opaque card sleeves makes Dreams of Dystopia a costly game to produce at such a small print run. Most of the expense is the plates in which there is no way to really cut the cost of. We also cannot order the sleeves in enough bulk to get a major discount. As you will see we are operating by the skin of our teeth and will profit little if anything unless we reach deep into our stretch goals.
Here is a general cost breakdown for a 500 game print run.
Production of 500 units $15 each X 500 = $7,500
200 opaque card sleeves per game $1.50 per pack of 100 x 2 = $3 x 500 = $1500
Estimated shipping to KS supporters at the $6100 funding level $10 x 136 = $1360
KS costs and % 10% of $6100 = $610
Total = $10,970
So why the heck are we asking for only $6100? We have managed to secure the rest of the funds needed to make the 500 print run. We are hoping beyond hope that we will make it to the $12.000 mark and will not need the outside funding. Our original goal was to produce 1000 games but as I mentioned, that would take nearly $20,000 - a mark we pray we can hit but need to have a more realistic option at hand.
Please take a look at our Stretch Goal Plan.
DOD Fan Shirts:
We are also offering Dreams of Dystopia Fan Shirts, which you can purchase by adding $40 USD per shirt to your basic pledge. Please specify if you would like shirt A or shirt B (or both/how many of each).
DoD - The Customizable Card Game:
If you are not that much into the Deckbuilder types of games and prefer to build your decks prior to play and maybe even dread the idea of having to sleeve, unsleeve and resleeve cards as a part of the actual gameplay but find the feel, style and look of the Dreams of Dystopia Deckbuidling Game appealing, we may have just the right thing to offer to you. Have a look at...
The Dreams of Dystopia Customizable Card Game is set in the post apocalyptic world of DoD and borrows heavily from the Deckbuilder mechanics but adopts the classic CCG approach of building decks prior to play from a pool of available cards - 300 in total in the case of the CCG. IF you want further information on the CCG please click here. The full card spoiler can be found here and the rules draft over here.
Here as a little extra visual teaser the 8 Factions featured in the CCG:
Please note that we are not seeking funding for the full 300 cards DoD CCG through this campaign. However we are offering small "DoD CCG Intro Packs" for 2 players at some of our pledge levels. If you are interested, check it on the right hand side among the rewards. The full DoD CCG will be exclusively available on The Game Crafter at a fair price to be published sometime in the second half of this year 2015 (unless we reach the ulimate stretch goal which will get you all a free copy of the full CCG)! Contrary to the Deckbuilder, the CCG still needs some work until it is ready for release. Play testers welcome!
Upcoming: Dreams of Dystopia on your Mobile Device!
Yeah, that's right, we are proud to be able to announce the DoD Mobile App that will be available for Android and iOS later this year!

Risks and challenges
I think in the case of Dreams of Dystopia there are not too many risks and challenges to expect and to tackle respectively. The art is all done, the game stands firm mechanics- and balance-wise and got terrific feedback from gaming scene insiders already. Also on the fulfilment side we have found a good solution, as our manufactuer is based in the US so no long waiting times for shipping the product from overseas to the States are to be expecte, and thus we are very confident that you all will get your copies of Dreams of Dystopia as fast as possible.
One challenge however I have to mention in order to clarify one thing: We know the game is not actually cheap as we are aiming for a low minimum print run of 500 copies only for starters. Now we could have offered you a better deal on your copy of DoD but for that we would have had to choose another manufacturer, and that would have meant a minimum print run size of no less than 1000 copies which is just exuberantly expensive and would have skyrocketed our funding goal. So that is the reason why we had no way to offer you the game any cheaper. We hope the many upcoming preview videos and media coverage will convince you that Dreams of Dystopia is worth your money! Thank you for your kind understanding of our situation.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
