POLIA AND BLASTEMA.
I am deeply moved by the generosity you have shown for wanting to see something beautiful and unique come to life in a way that would not be possible otherwise. I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and look forward to getting to work with David and Gavin to astonish you with Polia & Blastema! -E Elias Merhige
Elias is now exploring the creative possibilities that lie above the $15,000 goal; every dollar goes into the production of the film!
POLIA AND BLASTEMA is a love story about two beings that believe themselves to be ONE. Two alien creatures: completely distressed and confounded by their separation. The film is a ritual enacted, where each find the other across time and space as they try to become the other literally and physically, in the process creating a new utopia, a mythic city where the two beautifully merge to become a new kind of creature, a new form of god.
This is Science Fiction expanded through the lens of Ancient Classical literature and Gothic Horror.
"I want to shred the expectations of narrative in film, telling a primal story in the way that only images can by directly downloading ideas into your core. Visually this is new and uncharted territory, inspired by metaphysical Symbolism and ancient cellular textures. This is the absence of god, yet godliness in its purest form; theological dread, but existential fulfillment; I am pursuing the deepest contemplations of aesthetics and storytelling to create new symbols and new myths."
-E. Elias Merhige
ABOUT THE KICKSTARTER.
All of the filming for Polia and Blastema is finished, and a four-minute version has been edited. We need the funds for post-production and completion on a full-length 25 minute version: to record Elias's occult libretto and Gavin Gamboa's choral orchestrations, for visual designer David Wexler to expand the visual worlds created in the four-minute short into a full twenty-five minute version. We've secured most of the financing, and have determined that just another $15,000 will see this to completion and every dollar above will directly contribute to elaborating Elias's vision.
The estimated completion date for the 25 minute version is September 1, 2016.
THE DOWNLOAD OF THE FOUR MINUTE VERSION OF THE FILM WILL BE DELIVERED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN!
The twenty-five minute film delivery will be based upon festival requirements, but we will keep you posted regarding screenings and will get the film to you at the earliest possible date without compromising the film's widest theatrical release.
The fine edition prints will be produced and will be promptly shipped in the month following the close of the campaign.
ABOUT THE REWARDS.
We are exploring creative design options on the DVD packaging, we don't want to show you something mid-design and have it change dramatically but you can be certain it will be beautiful! The four stills from the movie that will be made both into mini-posters and printed as large, deluxe signed Fine Edition Prints are below: the choice of the final deep blush hue was reached in primordial light spectrum experiments performed by E. Elias Merhige and David Wexler.
ABOUT THE CREATORS.
E. ELIAS MERHIGE. Director E. Elias Merhige is responsible for some of the most gripping visuals in modern cinema. His landmark film Begotten was hailed as "an extraordinary original accomplishment" by Susan Sontag and named "One of the Year's Ten Best Films" by Richard Corliss in TIME Magazine. His follow-up, Shadow of the Vampire, starred John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe, Udo Kier, Catherine McCormack, and Eddie Izzard, and was named as one of the year's best films in numerous media lists and was nominated for two Academy Awards. Following his third and fourth films, Suspect Zero and Din of Celestial Birds, Elias experienced nearly a decade of confounding health problems that resulted in a near-death experience and life-saving organ transplants. The otherworldly, shamanistic visions that Elias experienced during this powerful and transcendent experience take the passionate spark ignited by Begotten and carry it forward to light the furious torch of Polia and Blastema.
VISUAL DESIGNER & ANIMATOR, DAVID WEXLER. Under the name Strangeloop, visual artist David Wexler designs live performance visuals for Flying Lotus, The Weeknd, Erykah Badu, Flume, and David Gilmour. With E. Elias Merhige, he co-created the short film The Din of Celestial Birds; Polia and Blastema is a result of their ongoing collaboration.
COMPOSER, GAVIN GAMBOA. Musician and visual artist Gavin Gamboa is collaborating with Elias and David to complete the film with otherworldly auditory textures. Gavin Gamboa explores the intersections of improvised and premeditated composition, with new technologies forming the basis of his stylistic experimentation. Born in Mérida, Yucatán, he currently composes for a variety of concert ensembles, creates film music, and performs classical/new works internationally.
