The Show

Paint is thrown, dripped and pressed onto the naked body, as art and theatre combine in an explosion of colour and movement. LIBERATION investigates the psychological power of colour, and what it means to be liberated. It’s a vivid and visceral experience. Sometimes violent, sometimes beautiful, always messy.

Inspired by a real therapeutic art workshop, seven international performers explore the honesty of the naked form. Using dance, live music and choral singing they create a raw and dynamic expression of what it means to be alive.

The Details

Research and Development:The Poor School, Kings Cross 16th - 27th Febuary 2015. Performance Dates: Saturday 28th February & Sunday 1st March VAULT FESTIVAL 2015. Seven performers, two musicians and a ton of Paint.

The Foundations

In August 2014 The Alchemist Theatre Company brought together six international performers to work for one week on a new production called Liberation. Liberation is inspired by artist Shoshana Stern's 'Liberation Project' A self help group that provides an opportunity for individuals to explore the emotional effects of colour. They paint the naked canvas of the body as a means of self-liberation, breaking down the barriers of social norms, releasing emotions and exploring their own humanity.

Our August research and development period served as a week to discover the possibilities of creating a show using just movement and paint. We used the week to experiment with turning the ideas in Shoshana's workshops into a performance.

The work developed over the week through a series of impulse lead improvisations, performed to live music. The performers explored powder, poster and UV paint; throwing, dripping and pressing it onto themselves, and each other. This resulted in a number movement sequences which we filmed and photographed at the end of the week.

Why we need your support?

The budget for developing this show into a performance ready piece, and giving it its first staging comes to 15k.

Kickstarter is an important part of our strategy to raise the required income needed. This is an ambitious project that we have built a tight but effective budget for,  your donation will be used for the Production section of that Budget.

If you back this project, what you see on stage will be there because of your support. You will have made it happen.

Every pound counts, and we will be grateful for any amount you can spare.

Risks and challenges

This project is our most challenging to date. Working with paint creates many logistical problems. Mess control and Performer safety alone make it a tough project, but this is also our first venture away from new writing and back to the form we trained in, devising. For us the risks artistically are as high as the risks financially.

We have completed one development already within budget and with no technical problems. we believe we have the people and knowledge in place to successfully produce this next development.

We have employed an experienced Production Manager, an Established Stage manager and deputy stage manager, along with production support from The Heritage Arts Company who produce VAULT Festival. With this support team and our careful planning we can successfully achieve this productions potential.
