About

Columbia Food Park (CFP) coming this summer!

The City of Vancouver is growing, and with it we have an opportunity to establish a business that is unlike any the city has seen before. Columbia Food Park will be a destination for those looking to eat, drink, and engage in their community; but most importantly it will be a place that equips those with a passion for creating food, with the proper resources to do so.

Back in 1984, C-Tran built this park where ticketing took place and people waited for their buses. When C-Tran left, the park was closed to the public and subsequently had a variety of businesses cycle through, none of which engaged the community the way that was initially intended. We took notice of when this park became available and are bringing community back to the space in a functional way.  At first it was food trucks; as it evolved, it became something so much bigger. Located at 108 E. 7TH STREET, VANCOUVER, WA 98660, Columbia Food Park is the new home to a food revolution.

We are compiling a coalition of unique food artisans, the likes of which Vancouver has never seen before. The economic growth of the city is bolstered by the community that inhabits it. We believe that food is the best representation of that community.

By mitigating the cost normally associated with starting a new restaurant or food truck, we are providing a platform for the food creators to focus on their food first.

This will be done by offering fully equipped commercial kitchens built out of shipping containers. These will be available for rent immediately to interested vendors, eliminating cost, risk, and length of time normally associated with starting a new business.

We will have dedicated tap handles for Loowit Brewing, Trap Door Brewing, Heathen Brewing, Doomsday Brewing, and Trusty Brewing to name a few. Ultimately, our drinks are just as important as our food. Together they build the backbone of what the CFP culture represents. Our taproom in the back of the park will serve out to a patio and stage/entertainment area.

Expansion into Wine, Coffee, and Kombucha is also expected.

We will embrace the creativity and sense of adventure valued here in Pacific Northwest, by offering a space for people to create food and test their ideas. This is why our business model is focused on being an incubator for restauranteurs in Vancouver.

The model is:

  • Every vendor in our space will receive all-inclusive support from our team on branding, website development, and social media.
  • There will be access to community partners to offer business advice and feedback as new business owners develop their identity. Operating resources are also a part of the identity we are cultivating.
  • Vendors will have immediate online ordering capabilities that will be maintained by the CFP staff.

Our goal is for our food vendors to become so successful that they grow out of our park and into the community as established restaurants.

Alex has lived in Downtown Vancouver since 2010 and recently built a home in the Arnada neighborhood. He is married with a young son with another on the way. "When looking at places where we wanted to raise our family, there wasn’t anywhere that ranked higher than Downtown Vancouver." Alex is a Customer Success Manager at the tech company, DiscoverOrg, in Downtown Vancouver.

Kylan has lived and worked in Downtown Vancouver for over six years. Married with three kids he runs a website consulting business that is heavily focused on small local businesses. Through offering these professional services, Kylan has developed a desire to provide resources to businesses struggling to develop a strong brand identity and marketing focus.

LONG-TERM VISION

When working through the specifics of what our project should be, we landed on a model that merged the idea of creatively serving food and building up the community. Here is our plan:

  • We are building out shipping containers to function as fully equipped commercial kitchens for rent.
  • We are offering branding, custom websites, online ordering, and community partnerships to all vendors that rent space from us.
  • We are designing a bar that will have 5-7 local taps (Which include Heathen, Loowit, Trapdoor, Doomsday, and Trusty) that will always be dedicated to their corresponding brand and the beers they want represented.
  • We will have a stage for local bands and a projection screen system designed for regular community movie nights.
  • We will offer food/drink/community from sunup to sundown Monday through Sunday.

We want to create the support and opportunity for others to start something big and to do so while mitigating the risk normally associated with a startup.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

There are many financial elements that go into a complex project like this. After you consider the lease, insurance, permitting, and preparation, you can imagine the financial need we have. We want to make this project a reality for us in Vancouver, and with your help, we can make it happen sooner than later.

The $45,000 raised through this Kickstarter campaign will go directly into the cost of renovating and prepping the park for the shipping container kitchens, as well as purchasing two of the four kitchens needed.

WHAT YOU'LL GET

We have worked hard to provide a good lineup of rewards for backers of this project. With the help of a few local businesses, we are able to offer a wide range of rewards that hopefully make it worth the investment.

Risks and challenges

There is always financial risk when starting something new and bold like the project we have outlined above.

Our most important challenge to overcome is the steady march of time. Our hope is to open by early summer so that we can give the community another piece of Vancouver to love in the sunshine.

We are doing everything in our power to foster a growth opportunity for other food creators in our area. We want to provide the absolute best service to our community, and that requires a large investment of both time and finances.
