What is Suns Cinema?
For years we’ve dreamed of opening a small repertory cinema in Washington DC. While the District has no shortage of movie theaters showing today's big blockbusters, wouldn't it be great if you could walk down Mt. Pleasant Street and catch daily screenings of provocative and engaging cinema? Our dream is to create such a place - Suns Cinema.
Our concept began with "Uncle David's Film Nights" - nights where locals would gather in a strange home to eat, drink, and sit on couches or floors to watch strange movies, projected onto a white sheet. These nights were notoriously long, enlightening, joyful, and often weird. Libations were imbibed, and ideas were created. These evenings prompted the birth of an idea - a permanent space that would truly enhance our city and our community. The neighborhood of Mt. Pleasant could become even more interesting if people could easily be exposed to the art of rare, foreign, and forgotten films.
Well, now we’ve found a location!
After years of searching for a suitable venue, we've signed a lease for a space ideally located on Mt. Pleasant street, just a few blocks away from the Columbia Heights Metro Station.
And, while the space is great, it’s going to require a lot of work. The location was previously set up for retail and will have to be totally repurposed for use as a theater. As with any theater, we will need to install projection equipment, seating, proper lighting and the sound dampening system necessary to be a responsible neighbor. Beyond this, we hope to make Suns Cinema a relaxing and comfortable venue and will need to update the facilities. We also have to navigate our way through the city's regulations and licensing which takes time and money. This is where we need your help!
What you should expect from Suns
Although obtaining screening rights can be difficult and often expensive, we plan on programming great movies - some obscure, some familiar, all interesting. However, there are no plans to limit the screenings and events to movies only. We also plan to screen vintage television, animated shorts, and classic sportscasts while collaborating with local chefs and bartenders to bring creative food and beverage pairings to these features.
Our vision is to offer programming similar to this:
Why you should be involved
We want this place to be part of the neighborhood, as well as the city. Mt. Pleasant has an identity of being artistic, diverse, and politically involved. We'd like Suns to be an extension of these ideas.
As neighborhoods in cities across the country change, it's easy for places to lose their character. Often, major chains come in and hinder small businesses, adding very little to the enrichment of a community. That's part of the reason we want the community involved from the onset. We want to give you the opportunity to be a part of this project, and reward you for sharing in our dream of making Suns Cinema a reality. With your help, Suns Cinema will be a great addition to the neighborhood and D.C. as a whole!
Risks and challenges
The timeline of this project is at the mercy of the city, and the speed at which it chooses to grant permits and inspections. That being said, we are working our hardest to have Suns Cinema open as quickly as possible without sacrificing the quality and safety of the space.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
