About this project

Laying Lincoln Down is a graphic novel series that follows the days after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. His embalmer, Harry Cattell, must attend the body on a funeral train across America and keep the national martyr presentable for the people. And, he struggles with flashbacks to the Civil War. This series is being done in chronological order, so "1861" is the first volume.

Laying Lincoln Down: 1861 is forthcoming from Wicker Park Press (Chicago). The project’s contributors are grateful for the assistance of an Albert P. Weisman Award, and to The Kansas City Star for inclusion in the February 15, 2013 article “Hail to the Chief” (FYI section).

We are seeking funds to pay for completion of the artwork on the remaining 55 pages of the 75-page graphic novel, at a per-page rate. As well, costs for printing and shipping of the prizes (which are nothing to shake a stick at) and Kickstarter fees are factored into the funding goal.

That's it. The script is complete and Wicker Park Press is on board to publish Laying Lincoln Down, we just need funds to pay for completion of the artwork. If we exceed our funding goal, the additional money will go toward printing and distributing the extra copies of the book that will be necessary to fulfill all our donors' rewards.

Risks and challenges

Launching this Kickstarter campaign (and all Kickstarter campaigns, for that matter) is a response to a setback: lack of funds. A 2012 Albert P. Weisman Award from Columbia College Chicago is much appreciated, and helped a great deal in funding the first twenty pages of Laying Lincoln Down. However, fifty-five pages of art need completing, and that still needs paying-for. In response to that, I recently unsuccessfully pursued funding through the Kansas City Arts Council. And, here I am, pursuing this Kickstarter route. So, my best argument for demonstrating that this project will be seen to completion is that I've already put this work-in-progress out there, successfully applied for funding once and reached finalist status another time, and I'm still going strong.
