Thank you for taking the time to read this. Puebla: Ciudad Mural is a project by Colectivo Tomate. We started painting murals in 2010 in the neighborhood of Xanenetla, in the city of Puebla, Mexico. Our goal has been to rescue Mexican muralist heritage and use it as a tool to make the facades of this historical part of the city more beautiful and representative of the community's complex and intense identity. We have completed thirty two murals and are planning to paint twenty five more in the Spring of 2012.

The murals have been a team effort. The community of Xanenetla decided that the concepts of the murals should be along the lines of “who we were”, “who we are”, and “who we want to be”, thus describing through the walls, the past, present and future of the neighborhood. These designs have been co-created by local artists and the owners of the houses.

This year, we want to encourage five Latino-American mural and graffiti artists who are currently living abroad and have never been to Mexico to come to Puebla in April 2012. This is an opportunity to celebrate an exchange of talents and experience through a collective effort towards the restoration of these Xanenetla homes.

Together: You, Colectivo Tomate, twenty five artists, citizens of Puebla and the community of Xanenetla, will make this neighborhood a Mural heaven that speaks of our current cultural matters, talents and wishes during a two-week celebration of cooperative exercises and multiple beautiful identities.

Who we are

Colectivo Tomate is an independent Mexican group of artists that have been working on this mural project for almost two years as volunteers. We work with architects, graphic designers, painters, journalists, dancers, photographers, environmentalists, biologists and anybody with noble creative ideas towards beautifying our city and empowering our historical identities. We stand for colorful facades, smiling faces, dripping paintbrushes, restored houses, cactus paint, dancing, linking communities and mural art as a tool towards cohesiveness. We are Donaji, Tomás, Memo, Vica, Paola, Ximena, Paulina and hundreds of other hands and hearts that have contributed to this project.

Why Kickstarter?

We have obtained funding for our previous murals through more conventional efforts, such as grants and institutions. We have been inspired by Kickstarter, and its simple way of igniting efforts towards creative processes and the possibilities that it promotes and supports by linking people to beautiful ideas.

Destination of funds

With your generous donation, you will be contributing to the project by helping five Latino-American artists come to Mexico and contribute to Latinamerica by painting murals with the community of Xanenetla, as well as twenty other local artists. Donations will go towards all the necesary materials to paint twenty five murals including the restoration of the twenty five facades, coordinate several workshops with the artists during the two-week mural painting festival, and document the entire creative process on video and printed material. Every single dollar will support us. If we are successful together, we will be celebrating the triumph of art over anguish and economic struggle. We shall celebrate community effort over dispersion. We will celebrate the joy of coming together as friends and families over territorial limits. We will celebrate color over deconstruction. We will celebrate the voice of cooperation and the power of sharing.

With deep gratitude,

Colectivo Tomate team
