AS FEATURED BY
Upon seeing my own son, Lucas, and his friends struggle with eating certain foods (vegetables!), I created Read Them and Eat Books. These functional, interactive children's books promote creativity, help picky food eaters see food in a new way, and entertain children.
Read Them and Eat Books makes the child (two years old and up) its primary illustrator. Children are encouraged to use their own food (a suggested ingredient list is provided) to create and act out a story within the designed space. By the end of the story your children will have consumed an entire meal, as well as engaged all five of their senses through this activity.
The stories are printed in the United Stated on nontoxic, washable, and water-resistant laminate, which allows for the book to be used over and over. They are also durable and light-weight, which allows for easy transport to a restaurant.
In Sally Strands and Her Wacky Hairstyles, children play the character of Sally, a girl who loves to play with her hair and craft new hairstyles despite what anyone thinks. The story and instruction encourage children to use spaghetti and its fixings to create fun hairdos by combing, curling, or shaping other humorous hairstyles within the designed space.
In The Most Delicious Train Ride, children go on a fantastic train ride through the creation of Billy and Sara and the sandwich train they board. Over mountains, past lakes, and through towns they ride all while fully enjoying the experience of being on a train. An entire sandwich and its fixings will be consumed by the end of the story.
What Folks Are Saying
"It's a very unique idea that I haven't seen, and there's nothing more frustrating when your child doesn't eat. My son was never a picky eater until recently, and this book helped him focus on eating." — Jennifer Flowers with, son Aidan (5 years)
"I definitely can see myself getting creative with food using this because I love the idea of creative, beautiful food, but I don't want to do it if it's just on a plate. . . With this, I can see myself using a carrot coming out of her hand, which could be a wand. . . so, it helps me out in that way... I would use Sally [Strands and Her Wacky Hairstyles] as my model." — Erika El-Ansary with daughter, Isabelle (3.5 years)
"As a new mom, the prospect of feeding my baby food for the first time was daunting. I browsed several sites online to learn how other parents taught their kids to try new food, but nothing really stood out. With the Read Them and Eat series, I finally found a fun way to engage my toddler while showing him that vegetables are just as fun to eat as fruits and sugars! My son particularly loves story time, and I thought that mixing his favorite activity together with feeding time was a fun and creative way to get him to eat everything. I can't wait to see him finish everything off his plate as he advances to new foods. . . or should I say page?"
— Christina Kim with son, Jeremy (9 months)
"What stands out to me about this product is that it is interactive. As a parent of a picky eater it's nice to do something fun with my kid to get her to eat instead of force feed her spoonfuls of food." — Ilene Feng with daughter, Zoey (3 years)
"It was like no other book that I have ever interacted with before, and let me tell you, I have interacted with a lot of books. . . We got to spend time together, we got to eat food and have fun."
— Joel Slater with son, True (3 years)
I have a solid prototype that has been tested on many children and their parents. Their feedback has been incorporated into my final manuscripts. In addition, I have both books covers completed and also a draft storyboard. Now I need your help to finish the illustrations and print the book (a minimum must be met) to get these stories into children's hands!
Your Pledge! Any pledge amount will guarantee a heartfelt thank you. In addition, folks who pledge in the amount of $20+ will receive a pre-ordered book. The pledged amount includes shipping or hand-delivery.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge will be working with the printer to get the books printed on time. I have found a printer who understands the books' unique layout and concept, but I want to ensure that the quality of the product is up to par. If the project is fully funded, a proof will be requested. More time may be needed to ensure that the quality of the books is what you deserve.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
