A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
Pebble Stationery Co. was founded by Lois Ho and Joohn Soh from a love of stationery products. We’re a small business, based in Australia, and we believe in learning and creativity. We support people to learn and create new things by designing beautiful, well made products that are easy and enjoyable to use. Our focus is on producing high quality, minimalist stationery at a reasonable price.
This Kickstarter campaign is to help bring our first product - The Pocket Tomoe River Notebook to life. We have a lot of ideas that we’re hoping – with your support – to bring to life. So when you back our Kickstarter campaign, you’re not just buying some notebooks, you’re helping to bring a stationery company, and our dream, to life.
About the Notebook
This notebook was developed from a love of writing, creating, organising and learning and a love of pocket notebooks. After years of using pocket notebooks, we couldn’t find one that we really loved, so we decided to design and develop our own.
Being users of pocket notebooks, we found that typically pocket notebooks had too few pages – we were constantly migrating tasks and lists and didn’t have the right notes with us because they were in the previous notebook. The paper quality usually couldn’t handle fountain pens, and we snagged clothing and fingers and scratched our pens on the staples.
Our notebooks have been designed with portability and function in mind. We’ve chosen to use 52 gsm Tomoe River Paper, well known in the fountain pen community for its performance, which is thin enough to allow us to add more pages per notebook whilst keeping it light and portable.
Since Tomoe River Paper tends to have long dry times however, so we have paired our notebook with a sturdy pencil (which has no dry times!).
The Pebble Pencil has a soft, dark 2B lead core which is soft enough to allow you to write using both sides of the page.
We have created and tested a number of prototypes with different use cases and different users and we are now ready to kick off our business and offer our very first product and place our production order for our notebooks. This is where we need your help and support with this Kickstarter campaign.
Still Can't Decide?
Still not sure whether to back our Kickstarter project? Have a look at some of our reviews:
"I love that the branding is subtle and utilitarian.....I've been using it daily" - Kelli McCown, Mountain of Ink
"Nice and subtle....I'm confident I will keep using this notebook as my EDC notebook" - Yagan Kiely, Macchiato Man
Community involved development
We’re focused on developing products that you will use and love. We want to work with the community to develop products for the community – we’d love to get you involved on the development process! So when this Kickstarter campaign is backed, we will send out a survey to invite backers who would like to be involved in our design and development process to sign up with us and help us develop products that you want and provide feedback on products we have developed. And yes – from time to time this will include beta testing of products we have produced!
Its important to us to give back to the community and support creativity and learning across the globe. So we will be working with our friends at Pens for Kids to provide pencils to children in need around the world. For each pack of Pocket Tomoe River Notebook sold, we will donate a pencil to be sent to a child in need around the world.

The following is taken from Kickstarter's info page.
Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of ambitious, innovative, and imaginative projects that are brought to life through the direct support of others.
Thousands of creative projects are funding on Kickstarter at any given moment. Each project is independently created and crafted by the person behind it. The filmmakers, musicians, artists, and designers you see on Kickstarter have complete control and responsibility over their projects. They spend weeks building their project pages, shooting their videos, and brainstorming what rewards to offer backers. When they're ready, creators launch their project and share it with their community.
Every project creator sets their project's funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers' credit cards are charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing.
Backing a project is more than just giving someone money, it's supporting their dream to create something that they want to see exist in the world.
Risks and challenges
Although this is our first Kickstarter project, we have had more than 10 years of experience in managing end to end business operations, from production to delivery to customers. Based on our experience, we have identified the following areas as risks and challenges to this project and worked to mitigate the risks.
1) First Kickstarter Campaign – we have done a trial run of the entire production process and we are working with experienced suppliers who have been able to deliver the product to their designated schedules thus far. However, to mitigate any logistical and operational complications for our first campaign, we are limiting our offerings to 2 line items which will allow us to deliver our products to customers in a timely manner
2) Shipping and Fulfilment – given that our company is comprised of only two people, our ability to fulfil a large number of orders in a short space of time is limited. We will be supported by a fulfilment company to help package and send our notebooks in a timely and effective manner. This will also help us to reduce our shipping costs to you, the customer, due to the larger discounts in shipping costs that is available through a fulfilment partner.
3) Order blow out – our biggest risk is to receive too many orders from the Kickstarter campaign and not be able to source enough materials to supply and deliver notebooks to our backers in a timely manner. Therefore, we have made the decision to cap the total number of rewards that are on offer for this project to prevent any blows outs and ensure that we can fulfil our rewards in a timely manner. We apologise to anyone who may miss out as a result. This is just our way of making sure we can fulfil our promises during this campaign.
