About this project

I set up In The Chair, a free podcast about Freemasonry (www.masonicpodcast.com) completely independently and I get no support or assistance from my Lodge, my Province, United Grand Lodge of England or any other organisation or individual.

It's a podcast about Freemasonry, though you don't need to be a Freemason to listen to it. In fact it's great listening for those who want to find out more about the subject.

With no money spent on advertising (and no assistance from UGLE) there have now been almost 35,000 unique downloads of the podcast from iTunes and Stitcher, with listeners spread over the whole world.

Over the past year I have invested a lot of money, time and effort into producing In The Chair, but without financial support I am going to be unable to continue the podcast.

Since August 2015 there have been 32 episodes of content that are completely FREE - and I plan to continue what with another 20, starting Series 2 in September 2016, with a new podcast every two weeks.

However...

In August 2016 I will need to renew the podcast hosting for another year - if I don't do this then not only will there be no new episodes, but the existing resource of 32 episodes will no longer be freely available.

Should the podcast stop then the equipment I have will no longer be needed and my only option will be to try and sell it cheaply on eBay to re-coup my losses.

The biggest investment has been the time invested. A 45 minute episode requires approximately 6 hours to produce - from initial co-ordination of interview, the interview itself, editing, show-notes, graphics and uploading. There is also the website that needs constant maintenance, as well as the continual social media promotion and interaction.

This has taken time from my usual business, and therefore although time doesn't cost me money directly, it has an impact on my personal finances through lost income. (Essentially I’m losing one day each working week, or 20% in time, from my usual business.)

The bottom line is I need to be able to cover my costs before I can even consider continuing with the podcast after July 2016!

So what's the plan to keep In The Chair going?

I'm therefore planning Series 2. It will build on the format already in place - and more! However, some of these features will cost money to produce, and I can't continue backing it from my personal finances. Being able to properly produce episodes will allow:

  • A greater range of interviews
  • Travelling to locations for exclusive reports
  • Additional benefits for listeners
  • Advertising for new listeners interested in finding out more
  • Covering hosting & equipment costs
  • Better lines of communication
  • Improve the public's perception of Freemasonry
  • Promote the values of Freemasonry
  • More people listeners finding out what Freemasonry really is

I have already started pre-production for Series 2 and outlined topics and lined up interviewees based on listener suggestions. There's some great stuff in the pipeline and I hope it makes to air!

The only other alternative would be to make In The Chair only available to paying subscribers - but this would be that newer Masons, and those looking to find out more before joining would be unlikely ever hear it.

Thank you for your support, Robert

(Please note, any adverts or messages will be subject to approval before broadcast. Shipping outside of the UK may take a few weeks for delivery.)

Risks and challenges

With 32 episodes already published (check out www.masonicpodcast.com/itunes if you haven't heard them), almost 35,000 unique downloads, hundreds of subscribers and listeners from around the world the format and brand is already established

The next challenge is to up the quality of the guests, give more valuable content and increase the number of listeners - whilst keeping it FREE to download.
