Dungeons & Dancers is a theatrical production that blends the captivating art of belly dance with the immersive storytelling of Dungeons & Dragons. Both dance and tabletop roleplaying have the power to transport us to other worlds filled with magic and exciting new experiences! Dungeons & Dancers is our love letter to the boundless potential for creativity and storytelling that both of these forms of expression provide.
The story of Dungeons & Dancers follows our party as they search for an ancient artifact known as the Sanguine Amulet. All the danger and delights of an epic fantasy tale await them, but what sets this show apart is the original D&D adventure that inspired it. We wanted to evoke the feeling of sitting around a table with friends and enjoying the epic and ridiculous things that unfold as you play. And what better way to do that then actually play through a campaign? The end result is a story told through dance and dialogue that captures the vitality and magic of a game of D&D.
Dungeons & Dancers will debut over 10 brand-new choreographies made just for the show, as well as new versions of two beloved LXBD dances. We explore the wide range of belly dance styles and props, using all that this rich dance form has to offer to tell our story.
The premiere of Dungeons & Dancers will take place on August 24, 2019 at the PSI Theater in Durham, NC. This performance celebrates the 5th anniversary of Geektastic–The League of Extraordinary Bellydancers' annual stage-show. Over the years, Geektastic has become a must-see show, hosting the top talent in theatrical belly dance and consistently enhancing the theatrical experience. We're thrilled to level up Geektastic once more and bring our audience the best show yet with Dungeons & Dancers!
The League of Extraordinary Bellydancers (LXBD) is a North Carolina-based theatrical belly dance troupe. Our signature style combines the exotic art of belly dance with the geek fandoms you know and love. From outdoor festivals to bustling conventions; intimate venues to packed theaters -we’ve delighted audiences with our geeky dancing since 2014! Essentially, we’re a group of incredibly nerdy dancers who can't resist the urge to take our geek passions and fuse them with our passion for dance.
We've been honored to open for the experimental performance art band Beats Antique at a packed Haw River Ballroom; share our signature Game of Thrones-themed set at the inaugural Con of Thrones and for George R.R. Martin himself at ConCarolinas; and perform a Ubisoft-inspired show for one of their holiday parties! Most recently, we hosted Tassels & Tabletop–a weekend of D&D, dance, and more! Tassels & Tabletop was an incredible success, showing us that the combination of dance and D&D is truly magical.
Dungeons & Dancers features exciting new choreographies from our director, Emily Beaman, as well as LXBD members Deserae Le Roux, Sara Beaman, and Harleen Kaur. The performance in August will also have multiple guest dancers sharing the stage with us to present their takes on classic D&D monsters.
The Dungeons & Dancers campaign–aka Search for the Sanguine Amulet–was created by our troupe director and experienced DM, Emily Beaman. With parents who played D&D before she was even born, Emily’s fascination with TTRPGs started at a very early age and since then has grown into a full blown obsession.
Our campaign was adapted for the stage by talented writer and LXBD member, Lauren Admire (The Escapist, Raleigh News & Observer). Lauren’s signature wit and dramatic flair is evident in Dungeons & Dancers’ hilarious and heartwarming dialogue.
The cast of Dungeons & Dancers features The League of Extraordinary Bellydancers and talented guest performers from throughout the Southeast.
Main Cast: Deserae - Juniper the Elven Wizard, Emily - Lady Mara Windsev the Quest Giver, Harleen - Solenzara the Drow Rogue, Lauren - Etta the Human Gunslinger, Michalene - Fairelith the Elven Cleric, Sara - Teeli the Half Elf Bard, Sonya - Ziva the Dwarven Paladin, Zaftig - Cupcake the ??? (we don't want to spoil the surprise!)
Chorus Dancers: Cynthia, Deborah, Joanne, Nita, Rachel, Shahzaadee, Stephanie, Sydney, Vandy, and Vanni.
Guest Performers: Our guest performers portray NPCs and creatures that the party encounters on their adventure. To keep things exciting, we don't want to say exactly what they'll be in the show ;)

INITIAL GOAL - MET!
Cover the basic production costs - $1500
Our initial fundraising goal aims to cover our base production expenses, the bulk of which comes from the cost of the theater rental. This goal is the bare minimum we need to for the performance to occur.
STRETCH GOAL #1 - UNLOCKED!
Improve show documentation PLUS Dungeons & Dancers One-Shots! - $2000
This amount will give us the funds needed to hire a professional photographer and videographer. Better documentation = more to share with those who can't make it to see it in person!
If we reach this level of support, we'll add three Dungeons & Dancers one-shot adventures (The Forsaken Keep, Spire of the Crystal Wizards, and Something Borrowed) for D&D 5e to our pledge rewards. Even better, any pledges of $40+ will receive these one-shots in addition to their chosen reward. These one-shots debuted at our sold out Tassels & Tabletop event and we'd love to share them with you!
- Something Borrowed—Crash an extravagant wedding reception where the content of the host’s vault promises to be even more dazzling than the married couple—that is, if you can manage to get inside while wedding guests abound. This adventure is great for those looking for a roleplay-focused experience. (Level 3-5)
- The Forsaken Keep—Explore the long-abandoned ruins of Sundryl Keep and discover the secrets it holds within. This adventure is perfect for those looking to experience a classic dungeon crawl with a twist. (Level 3-5)
- Spire of the Crystal Wizards—Investigate a wondrous tower where magic and oddities abound and nothing is quite what it seems. This adventure is particularly good for those who enjoy puzzles and whimsy. (Level 5-7)
STRETCH GOAL #2 - UNLOCKED!
Dungeons & Dancers Show After Party - $2500
Celebrate with us! When we reach this level of funding, we'll host an after party for the premiere of Dungeons & Dancers-exclusive for Kickstarter donors.
STRETCH GOAL #3 - UNLOCKED!
Search for the Sanguine Amulet 5e D&D Adventure - $3000
At this level of funding, we'll turn our Dungeons & Dancers adventure into a full 5e D&D campaign module — Search for the Sanguine Amulet!
Seek out the mythical Sanguine Amulet and unlock its bloody past. Will you find this ancient artifact before its destructive potential is unleashed?
Search for the Sanguine Amulet is a 5e D&D campaign that expands the story of Dungeons & Dancers, taking adventurers from level 3-10. Players choose their own path to seek out the titular amulet using research, rumors, and allies. While you will recognize some of the locations and characters from Dungeons & Dancers, many other leads and factions are at play, allowing for entirely different adventures to unfold based on player decisions. With everything from fighting dangerous and unique monsters to navigating intricate social encounters, Search for the Sanguine Amulet can be customized to suit your table's playstyle. The adventure takes place in our homebrew setting of Ellara, however it can easily fit into your desired setting.
When this stretch goal is met, PDF/ebook and print versions of Search For the Sanguine Amulet will be added to our available pledge rewards. Any pledges of $100+ will receive a free pdf copy of Search for the Sanguine Amulet and anyone who has pledged at the $10 tier or higher will be able to add the module reward on to their pledge for only $10! To allow for editing and playtesting, the estimated release date for this campaign is Summer 2020.
We will use DriveThruRPG to fulfill this reward. When we send our post-Kickstarter survey, you'll have the option to select if you'd like a pdf or print copy of module. If you select pdf, you'll get a code for a copy of the module when it is published. If you select print, you'll receive a code for an at-cost print version of the module - please note that you will need to pay the base printing and shipping costs through DriveThruRPG to get your physical copy.
STRETCH GOAL #4
Signed Dungeons & Dancers Prints - $3500
If we reach $3500, we'll include a signed print featuring our Dungeons & Dancers cast for all backers who attend the show or selected the shirt reward. Any backers who aren't local and aren't already having something shipped to them will receive a digital version of the print. We want to show you love for the support and faith you've put into this vision. <3
Risks and challenges
-You'll fall in love with belly dance and/or D&D and want to spend all your free time doing it.
-We'll keep making creative new shows!
-Our troupe director will finally gain the power to turn herself and her dog into liches and together they will rule all.
We're fortunate that this is a low-risk project. The main concerns are that we won't raise enough money to hold the performance on August 24. If we are able to meet our minimum goal that will guarantee that the show on August 24 will occur—barring any catastrophes such as weather emergencies or our entire cast getting trapped in a pocket dimension the night of the show. We've produced four shows of this scale and are experienced enough to plan for the worst-case scenario so that the show can go on!
With any physical rewards, there's always a slight chance that something will cause production to be delayed. We'll do everything in our power to meet the fulfillment dates and in the event that there's a delay, we will update you right away.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
