About

You might be a librarian, academic skills teacher, or learning support tutor. You might be based in a school, college, university, or other setting.

If you teach information, digital, or academic skills to students, then this Kickstarter might be for you... especially if you like getting lovely surprises through the letterbox!

TeachKits are a set of teaching materials you get through the post to help you teach these things, especially if you tend to have "one-off" sessions with students and need something quick and easy to add into your teaching.

Depending on the topic, the TeachKit may contain lesson plans, games, books, handouts, print and digital resources, badges, or whatever else fits that topic well.

Boxes will be small enough to fit through most letterboxes without annoying trips to the post-office to pick them up!

Prototype box! Should fit through most UK doors...

The Kickstarter will fund an initial, quite generic box and help gauge interest in producing an ongoing series of them. Ideas for topics in future so far include: Evaluating your session; Ice Breakers; Search Strategies; Sources of information; Referencing; General teaching skills (including lesson planning); Critical evaluation; Developing a topic (research questions and first steps); Open licensing; Copyright / licensing; Plagiarism; Critical reading; Revision techniques; Escape rooms for education; and Making games for learning. If we create an ongoing series, they are likely to be available as a subscription, with each box also available for one-off purchase for a limited time afterwards. Estimated cost for future boxes is £40 each (+P&P).

The initial box available as a reward is:

Draft designs for the first box's materials.

Evaluating your teaching. This contains material to help collect feedback to evaluate your teaching session. It will contain a minimum of 5 ideas in the package, with materials including specially printed post-it notes, cards, and paper feedback templates - more will be revealed in the updates!

We will also design materials for the next box that we'll release after the Kickstarter: Sources of Information. This box includes material to help your students evaluate and discuss different sources of information. It will include at least two different games, lesson plans, and other goodies -  whether we print and produce it will depend on whether we reach our stretch goal!

All boxes we produce will include access to digital versions of all files used to allow you to adapt and re-print any materials you want.

Prototype postcards
Prototype postcards

The postcards available as rewards each contain a short thought about playful teaching and learning, a challenge to increase play in your teaching, and a "quick win" tip that you may be able to easily carry out.

Some of the materials have already been designed and created. The graphic designer will be working on the other materials while the campaign is ongoing, so everything will be ready to print as soon as the campaign finishes.

New reward added! I've updated and revised the SEEK! game (first created 2012), which I use regularly when teaching search skills. If we succeed with TeachKits, it will be included as part of the "search skills" TeachKit. As an early extra I've added it into the options as a reward.

Stretch Goals

£1,500 Campaign funded!

100 backers - We will set up an online community, inviting all backers at the £10 level or above. This will include space to discuss teaching ideas, share materials, and more.

£2,000 Extra surprise bonus item for the box!

£3,000 2nd box (Sources of Information) will be designed and prepared for printing - full details to follow if we approach this stretch goal.

Money / Costs

The overall costs depend heavily on the number of backers. While there are costs that are fairly well fixed (like the graphic designer), the nature of printing these materials means that the price per box depends on the number of boxes ordered. Some items have minimum print levels (e.g. one item I want to include has minimum order of 500 items for around £700), and most are cheaper the more we print (e.g. One pack of cards for a game costs £16.99 - to print 100 costs just £6 each!).

If we just hit our target, we might just about break even, exceeding it will mean we can get a bonus item in the box as the cost per box reduces (see stretch goals), and if we exceed it by enough, we will be able to produce materials for the next box.

The TeachKit idea was first shown at the LILAC conference, you can find my write up of how it went on my blog.

Risks and challenges

The main risk is related to printing - we are using a wide range of printers thanks to the diverse nature of the materials included. If any materials come back unusable, this will delay the project slightly, but typically only by a few weeks. This might mean boxes being dispatched in August rather than July.
The same applies if the project is more successful than expected - it may take slightly longer to pack the boxes, meaning boxes will start being dispatched in July, but may be spread over a few weeks.
In order to reduce risks we are releasing just one box as part of this Kickstarter.
