Every "Back to the Future" fan knows the DeLorean Time Machine. It's arguably the most iconic car in movie history. But while the film's legacy has thrived over the years - the car itself wasn't so fortunate. Decades of harsh weather and souvenir hunters reduced this film legend to a shadowy reflection of its former self. By 2010, it looked as if the car would not survive. Fortunately Bob Gale, Universal Studios, and a team of dedicated fans decided to take action...
“OUT OF TIME: Saving the DeLorean Time Machine” is the incredible comeback story of the world's most famous film car. Meet the filmmakers, celebrities, studio executives, and movie fans who worked together to bring the original Time Machine back to life!
A restoration for the fans...by the fans
What makes this story unique is how the restoration was accomplished. The Time Machine wasn't restored by a studio or an auto body shop. Instead, Universal Studios boldly decided to have FANS restore the car. Fans with the knowledge, passion and the obsessive attention to detail that the Time Machine deserved!
So, Bob Gale hired Joe Walser - who assembled a team of the biggest "Back to the Future" fans and the best Time Machine builders in the world. Together, they had one goal - restore the car with 100% accuracy. Every wire. Every detail. Exactly like it was in the movie.
And the Time Machine Restoration Team was born.
"It's easy to build a Time Machine. It's hard to do it right."
The Time Machine isn't just a car. It's a highly designed piece of art. Thousands of pieces needed to be repaired. New computer systems were designed from scratch. A global "treasure hunt" was on, scouring the earth for one-of-a-kind vintage military parts. Every step was brutal - but necessary.
The Head of the Restoration, Joe Walser was determined to make every detail perfect. For over two years, the team poured their heart and soul into the restoration - because BTTF fans across the world were counting on them to get it right.
OUR FILMWe are proud that our film is the official documentary of the Time Machine Restoration. Working closely with Bob Gale and Universal Studios - our film reveals a unique and fascinating story that BTTF fans have never heard before.
To capture this incredible journey, producer Steve Concotelli embedded himself within the restoration team. For over a year, our crew captured every moment on camera. From amazing discoveries to frustrating setbacks - we caught it all.
We also interviewed dozens of people involved with the restoration and the BTTF franchise. That includes Bob Gale (Producer, BTTF trilogy), John Murdy (Creative Director, Universal Studios), Michael Scheffe (Construction Coordinator, BTTF), Michael Lantieri (Special Effects Supervisor BTTF 2 & 3), Kevin Pike (Special Effects Supervisor BTTF), members of the Restoration Team and more! Together, they reveal the Time Machine's hidden history and incredible rise from the ashes.
Why make this film? Because this restoration was a once in a lifetime experience that every BTTF fan will love to be a part of. And thanks to "OUT OF TIME", they will.
Our goal is to finish the 50 minute documentary about the Time Machine - from creation through its restoration. The film has already been shot and editing is 50% completed.
So, what do we need this money for? Two words: post production. Our crew donated their time and effort, but some things just aren't free. Composing, graphics, footage licensing, editing, insurance, and legal fees.
The money raised will enable us finish the film, so we can get a copy into your hands as soon as possible.
We are a group of industry professionals, filmmakers and producers, who happen to be huge "Back to the Future" fans. We've already made several videos about the Time Machine, including the famous 'reveal' video of the fully restored Delorean Time Machine. We are thrilled to be working closely with Bob Gale himself - to ensure "OUT OF TIME" maintains the highest levels of quality and respect for fans and the BTTF franchise.
So, we encourage you to participate in our Kickstarter. Get your hands on a cool movie and some great memorabilia. But hurry, before our campaign is...
Risks and challenges
There's nothing I hate more than a documentary that asks for money, then doesn't deliver. That's why we are doing our kickstarter a little different.
Most filmmakers ask for money at the very beginning - when the risk for failure is highest. But we elected to wait until AFTER our filming was completed. That way, our supporters can contribute in confidence - knowing that we've already done the majority of the work. Now, we just need your help to bring it across the finish line.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
