EAT THE DEVIL; a theater production.
An alt-right fever dream about a terrifying virus gone viral in a post-fact America.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Tue, December 25 2018 3:00 AM UTC +00:00.
Hello friends, philanthropists, theater lovers and radical idea enthusiasts!
Join us in supporting the World Premiere production of EAT THE DEVIL by Nadja Leonhard Hooper and Dan Nuxoll. Co-Produced by OYL and THE TANK.
SUPPORT EAT THE DEVIL:
After 4 OYL development workshops, the participation of over 30 actors, 9 script re-drafts by 2 phenomenal playwrights, and with the extraordinary commitment of THE TANK, this project has spectacular momentum for its World Premiere Production in 2019!
EAT THE DEVIL is the first production to come out of the OYL Megaphone Program that supports young playwrights in creating unconventional, radical new work.
The creation of the Megaphone Program was inspired by the incredible work we see being created by Alumni of OYL's Summer Apprentice Program. We are certain that EAT THE DEVIL will be a successful debut production for OYL Megaphone!
WE NEED YOUR HELP to move it one step closer to opening night in NYC. Even as a smaller production, EAT THE DEVIL's budget is approximately $50,000 for a three week run in NYC. We need your help to raise $7,000 towards that goal. EVERYTHING we raise above and beyond that initial goal will also directly support the production, so with your help we know we can both meet and exceed our goal!
ABOUT EAT THE DEVIL:
EAT THE DEVIL is a new play set in a dystopian, media-crazed near-future, where a mysterious virus is infecting the nation. As viciously competitive media pundits battle to control the narrative, an artificially intelligent sex doll named Mia has a breakthrough… but will she be our Savior, or is she the Angel of Death?
EAT THE DEVIL immerses us in a hilariously chaotic, internet-fueled future where robot sex dolls, drooling TV evangelists, endless Twitch streams and Furry Manifestos force us to ask the question: where the heck is society headed and will it hurt...?
EAT THE DEVIL takes a humorous look at how far our obsession with internet connectedness and the resulting interpersonal disconnectedness may be taking us.
WHEN & WHERE:
EAT THE DEVIL is being co-produced by One Year Lease Theater Company and The Tank.
The world premiere will occur at The Tank (312 West 36th Street NYC) on February 17, 2019 and run through March 10, 2019.
The Tank is a non-profit arts presenter and producer. The mission of The Tank is to remove economic barriers from the creation of new work for artists launching their careers and experimenting within their art form, and to do so in an environment that is inclusive and accessible. The Tank serves over 2,000 artists every year in over 800 performances, and works across all disciplines, including theater, comedy, dance, film, music, puppetry, and storytelling.
MORE ABOUT OYL:
OYL’s mission is to create bold, athletic new works of theater that draw on the power of collaboration – the group, the ensemble, the chorus – to express bold visions of our collective human experience.
Our vision as a company is to create experiences for audiences that transcend the ordinary, transport the spirit and embrace the magical. We are deeply passionate about the artform of theater and seek to inspire the next generation of theater artists through our educational programming and support of young artists.
Our core programming to deliver on our mission includes:
Leaselab: Started in 2008, this is the new play development arm of OYL for our mainstage productions. Our process includes commissioning established playwrights to work collaboratively with the OYL ensemble in the creation of new plays to be premiered by OYL.
Over the last two years, OYL’s mainstage programming has focused on creating new work inspired by seminal historical events. By taking seminal historical moments in time and looking at them from a collective vision that accounts for the varying perspectives at the time of the event as well as questions regarding our collective memories, amnesia, and responsibilities, we believe we are initiating and supporting important intergenerational as well as intercultural conversations through the theater.
OYL Megaphone: Started in 2017, this is the secondary new play development program specifically for young, un-produced playwrights. OYL supports the development of two new plays per year through a series of workshops and readings, culminating in one annual production.
Educational Programming: OYL offers educational opportunities to young theater artists with:
The OYL Apprentice Program, started in 2007. The program, set in the remote mountains of Northern Greece, is a four-week deep immersion into the history of theater, the art of collaboration, and the exploration of the individual artist.
Workshops for the Actor in NYC, started in 2015. These free workshops for local professional actors provide insight into the creative process and tools OYL uses to create new plays.
Over the past six years, OYL has premiered five productions in New York City: Kevin Armento and Bryony Lavery’s Balls, Kevin Armento’s Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally, Bryony Lavery’s Stockholm, Mark Ravenhill’s pool (no water), Gary Henderson’s Skin Tight, and Pamela Carter’s What We Know. OYL has also performed pool (no water) in Boston at A.R.T.’s Oberon stage in 2014 and Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2016.
OYL received a 2018 Drama Desk Nomination (Sound Design, Balls) 2016 Drama Desk Nomination (Original Score, please excuse my dear aunt sally), and a 2016 Edinburgh Stage Award (Best Ensemble, please excuse my dear aunt sally)
Risks and challenges
We’re a growing theater company. We’re getting bigger every year. Our audiences are growing too. We’ve had some success and gotten some reviews we are really proud of. But raising the money to fill in the gaps between ticket sales and production budgets is always a challenge.
Add to this that EAT THE DEVIL is part of a brand new program OYL is running, and there are always risks involved.
However, we are convinced that with a combination of a fabulous script, fantastic talent, incredible partners, hard work, tenacity, and your support, EAT THE DEVIL will be an enormous success!
