Bringing sustainable urban agriculture to the streets of San Diego and bursting Herb En Routes to the seams of productivity

What is the Herb En Routes Fall Farm Trifecta? 

Herb En Routes has experienced tremendous growth since its start in June. We are determined to keep up with its rate of progress, but could use just a little help from friends, family and the community. We've identified three projects aimed at pushing us to new heights and combined them into one seasonal goal -- which we have deemed the "Fall Farm Trifecta."

Why "Fall" you may ask? Well, not only does "Fall" sound great next to the word "Farm", but we aim to complete The Fall Farm Trifecta by the last day of January. We aim to meet winter with the ability to grow more produce than ever before and tip our straw beach hats to another beautiful San Diego winter! 

The Fall Farm Trifecta includes:

1. Building a Chicken Coop

With the help of Caitlin Pennington of Wood Bee Gardens (www.woodbeegardens.com), we plan to finish the construction of our chicken coop and create a fenced-in yard for them to roam safely away from predators. Additionally, we will acquire 8-10 baby chicks and the supplies necessary to raise them. Our lovely ladies will supply Herb En Routes with farm fresh, nutritious eggs and allow us to be even more self-sustaining. Chickens fill an important biological role in the sustainable agriculture loop because they naturally control pests and weeds as well as produce an abundance of a high-nutrient compost. Finally, a well-built and correctly designed coop on-site will provide opportunities for educational classes on how to raise chickens safely and legally in an urban environment. Supplies needed for this project include building materials (both recycled and new), chicken wire, chicks, chick feed, straw, watering mechanisms and feeders.

2. Expanding the Greenhouse

We have outgrown the cutest and smallest commercial greenhouse in town! It serves us well and continues to provide a warm cozy shelter for our seedlings, but the time has come to expand. Our goal is to design and build a larger greenhouse that will accommodate our growing operation. Caitlin Pennington of Wood Bee Gardens has generously offered to donate her expertise, time, tools, and patience in order to help us build a greenhouse better suited for our needs. The new greenhouse design will include a very simple produce washing station as a means of streamlining our harvesting efforts. We aim to use recycled material wherever possible, but some of the necessary components will need to be purchased.

3. Maximizing  our Yield

Leveraging the previous projects, our final goal is to sustainably cultivate more of the space we have on-site in order to drastically increase our yield. Since our start in June, we've transformed more than 2000 square feet of empty vacant lot into a micro-farm and delicious produce paradise. Our goal by the end of fall is to transform the remaining usable space on-site into a high productivity growing surface. We plan to get creative and cultivate as much in-ground space along with vertical space as humanly possible. Some vertical farming ideas include creating "living" walls through the use rain gutters, cinder blocks, and crafty wood working. Materials needed to accomplish this portion of the Trifecta include irrigation supplies, compost, soil amendments, rain gutters, miscellaneous hardware, organic seeds and other supplies.

When developing The Fall Farm Trifecta, we made a conscious effort to select projects that we not only needed to accomplish, but were actually capable of accomplishing. Needless to say, there are always some risks and challenges with any project...not to mention in a series of projects. Below are a few of the potential challenges we face.

Given that the nature of our organization relies heavily upon the environment, she also has the ability to make it a challenge. Although Southern California winters are relatively mild, rain and mud delays may still pose an issue and slow down progress. We hope to continue working on some aspects of the projects even when the farm is too muddy to dig or use power tools. On these days, we plan on organizing our resources and completing project designs.

Additionally, Herb en Routes is owned and operated by only two individuals. At times we can feel spread thin working incredibly hard to meet current demand. While these projects are aimed at increasing the efficiency and diversity of our micro-farm, we are unable to put current operations on hold in order to complete them. A major challenge of ours is to not only complete our daily work load but set aside extra time to work on the Trifecta projects. We are committed to working extra hours over the next few months and to call upon the helping hands of our awesome and supportive friends.

That should do it for our perceived risks and challenges. We will keep you informed of any additional or unexpected challenges that arise as we push to complete our goals by the end of January.
