A comic about baking, crime and growing up.
Help us print 500 copies of the first issue of our comic series, Nutmeg.
Update from Nutmeg co-creator and artist Jackie:
Update from Nutmeg co-creator and writer James:
Nutmeg is a coming-of-age culinary crime comic about a pair of teenage girls who rise to power thanks to their criminally delicious brownies.
When quiet, friendly Poppy Pepper teams up with steely new girl Cassia Caraway in a bid to sabotage haughty rival Saffron Longfellow's brownie-baking enterprise, they wind up creating a brownie even more addictive than Saffron's, thanks to a secret and possibly illicit ingredient. Before long, they find themselves at the head of a culinary empire and must navigate Saffron, her crew, the PTA and even the police.
This is the first issue of a projected 18-issue series, by Jackie Crofts and James Wright, and includes 20 full-color pages of story as well as 4 pages of fan art. If you like crime fiction or baking--or both!--then this is the book for you. The intended audience is early-to-mid teens, though anyone at or above that age should find something to enjoy here.
How the Money Will Be Used:
The bulk of the funds will be used to print 500 copies of the first issue of Nutmeg to take to comic conventions in the coming months. (Jackie has already signed on for Wizard World Portland in January, as well as the inaugural Indiana Comic Convention in March.) The remainder will be used to cover incentives, shipping and handling, and Kickstarter and Amazon fees. Should we exceed our goal, we would like to increase our print run and provide additional perks for backers.
We've added a new tier (and a few slots to the limited MARJOLAINE and 3-TIER WEDDING CAKE levels) called AMBROSIA. This is a one-of-a-kind item: a friend of ours will make you a dress inspired by the color scheme of one of the six main girls from Nutmeg! So that's Poppy (Yellow and Teal), Cassia (Red and Brown), Saffron (Yellow and Green), Marjorie (Green and Brown), Ginger (Red and Purple) or Anise (Brown and Blue). He has also offered, if you prefer, to make Poppy's sleeveless-and-shorts combo OR Cassia's blouse-and-skirt piece. Here is a Poppy-inspired dress he made for Jackie earlier this year:
Where We Are:
Don't forget, you can follow us on Twitter (@NutmegComic), Facebook (facebook.com/nutmegcomic) and Tumblr (nutmeg-comic.tumblr.com), as well as on the official Nutmeg site (nutmegcomic.com) for more goodness. We're really excited about this book and can't wait to bring it to you.
If you're one of the backers who has pledged $40 or more, you'll be getting a Nutmeg t-shirt with series protagonists Poppy and Cassia on it. The original plan was to print on white t-shirts, but we think we'll be able to kick things up a bit to get black t-shirts. Here is what the design will tentatively look like:
STRETCH GOALS (UPDATED):
After consulting our team of ninja accountants, we've been advised to adjust our stretch goals a bit. We hope you all understand and thank you again for your support and patience.
ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED ($2,400) - DIGITAL GOODNESS! Everyone at all tiers receives background wallpapers featuring the different characters from Nutmeg (Poppy, Cassia, Saffron, Marjorie, Ginger and Anise), AND a PDF of all of the concept art from the book.
ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED ($3,000) - MOAR PAGES! We'll add four (4) additional pages to the first issue, featuring an original backup story starring Poppy and Cassia. This will be for the digital and print editions of the book.
ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED ($4,000) - ATTATCHMENTS! Everyone who pledged $8 or more gets a page of Nutmeg stickers, and everyone who pledges $40 or more gets a page of Nutmeg stickers and an original Mason Montgomery Preparatory Academy embroidered patch (just like the ones you see on Poppy and Cassia's school uniforms).*
$5,000 - FORESIGHT! Another four (4) pages added to the first issue, with an exclusive preview of the first four pages of Nutmeg #2.
Add-ons are a way to include an item (or items) to the original pledge rather than create or edit a whole new tier. To add an item, go to Manage My Pledge and adjust your pledge to reflect the cost of the item you'd like. Once the campaign is completed, we'll send out a Kickstarter survey to determine who adjusted pledges and which items you would like.
*(Note: the stickers and patches add-ons are contingent upon our reaching $4,000 in pledges.)
$6 - A single issue of Nutmeg #1 (shipping cost included). We received requests from a couple people about getting additional copies of the first issue on top of the one they're receiving as part of their pledge, so we wanted to make that option available as an add-on.
$10 - A page of Nutmeg stickers
$10 - A Mason Montgomery Preparatory Academy patch
$16 - The page of stickers and the patch
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The first issue of Nutmeg is complete, it just needs to be printed. So long as no fatal misfortune befalls us (*knocks on wood*) we see no barriers to meeting our goal.
One of the questions that's come up a few times is whether we plan on doing a Kickstarter for every issue of Nutmeg. It's a very valid question, but that was never our intention. Our plan is to use this Kickstarter to take physical copies of the book to conventions and help spread the word that way, then posting the first issue (beginning a month or so after all the backers have received their copies) and the ensuing chapters in twice-weekly installments for the first six chapters. We would then like to collect those six chapters into a single volume, and continue on in the same fashion for the remaining 12 issues (collected into six-chapter volumes of their own).
In other words, the physical comic itself is sort of a Kickstarter of its own to kick-start interest in the comic and the site.
