Hi everyone. My name is Holly Benton, and I run Relic Dice. We are a small team of craftsmen and women. We hand-make dice in Portland Oregon out of the coolest materials we can get our hands on.
We are RPG players and Board Gamers. We are fans. Artists. Forgers. But most importantly we are perfectionist. We polish till we can get it right.
I started Relic in 2014 when others in my gaming group started asking me where I purchased my dice. To begin with, I just made dice for myself. I thought it would be fun to bring something a little more classy to the table. But after my group seen them, they were no longer just for me. Soon, my group showed them to other players, who started to ask for dice themselves. Obviously there was a market here as long as the product was amazing and affordable.
We have been working on this Kickstarter for the last two years, and it's finally ready. We wanted to create a amazing new Polyhedral dice. Presenting Prism Dice.
It started off simple enough, but turned into quite a undertaking! We rethought every aspect of a Polyhedral set from the ground up. We changed the weight, balance, feel, font, everything about a standard die. Anything less than that would have been insufficient. Many dice makers before us have done the same thing, we want to leave our own mark on the industry just as they did.
Prism Dice have many features that makes them unique.
They are Sharp Edged with solid points. This was done to help make the dice more random. Dice that are mass produced overseas are tossed into rock tumblers and it grinds down the corners. The problem is this affects the dice during roll and tends to favor one part of the die more than others. Ever have that unlucky die that never seemed to roll well for you? It's not just in your head! Randomness in our dice was incredibly important to us, so we figured out how to keep those edges as sharp as we could so the dice was truly random.
As you can see from our D6 sample, our dice have crisp and clear lines.
Our dice were designed to be a functioning tool first. Plastic dice are too soft, and with rounded corners may not be quite as random. Metal dice have sharp corners but Some people feel they are way to heavy, and awkward for normal use. We have found the perfect balance for these dice for maximum randomness, while still keeping the die lightweight. Prism die both look amazing and feel great in the hand. Our dice are Standard sized gaming dice ( about 16mm ) but the dice are made by hand so may be slightly smaller, such as 15.9mm or 15.98889mm.
We wanted our dice to be made out of a fantastic material. The problem with that is it needed to be very light weight and strong at the same time. Another issue that was very important to us was clarity. We wanted our Dice to be Crystal Clear. We found a special Poly material to fill all the these criteria, and more! Plus, they use it in Bullet-Resistant glass, and that is just awesome!
We tested with many types of plastics, acrylics, glasses and polymers. The one that we settled on we used because it gave us a combination of the clearest result and strongest material we could find.
The photo below will show the light passing through one of our D20's. In the shot is a standard Die for comparison. Look at the shadow of our D20, and you will see how much light is going through!
Prism Dice needed to be durable. Although it may have glass in the kickstarter title, we wanted you to be comfortable using these dice. Dice are meant to be rolled! Anything that you need to roll one at a time on a velvet mat is not really a gaming tool, it's a prop. Nothing wrong with that, but we wanted something rock solid with a lifetime guarantee.
To put it plainly. We stand behind our product 100%. I will offer a lifetime guarantee on all work that comes out of our Forges. If any of our Prism Dice ever break or chip through normal gaming use, I will mail you a new one. These dice were made with a goal. They will outlive me, you and your kids. Simple as that.
Please note this warranty does not refer to normal wear over time. Everything will wear down over time. All dice, computers, even the sun. Every time you use something it will wear down at some point. Roll the dice ten thousand times, and it will start to wear the corners. But if your dice ever breaks or chips, that is on me. I do not recommend trying to destroy dice, mine or anyone.
But a Die is only as good as the person who makes it. Another big one for me was that all items are made by hand in the USA. We don't outsource anything, and we never will. Yes, things cost me more. Labor is more expensive. Tooling is more expensive. Materials are more expensive. But it is a cost I am willing to take on. I have faith that enough people are willing to support a product that wont sit in customs containers for six months to get to them. I have faith that enough people are willing to support local American talent. So all Prism Dice are made right here, in Portland Oregon.
All of our Dice sets come with either unpainted or painted numbers. We offer a 10 Dice D6 set, a 10 Dice D10 set, a 7 Dice Polyhedral set and a 10 Dice Polyhedral set. We understand that not everyone plays the same types of games, and we wanted to be able to offer our Prism Dice to everyone, at every budget. To the right in the Pledge Rewards you can see all the different sets of dice we offer. All of our sets are available in any of our colors. Just select the set of dice you want and you are done! We will send out a survey a few weeks after the Kickstarter ends to find out what color you want for your dice set.
These are the colors.
New Stretch Goal color, Emerald. This color is exclusive to Kickstarter.
Side by side shots of Painted and unpainted numbers.
Two Unpainted Sapphires.
Buying individual dice is easy. You can either get individual dice in addition to a set of dice, or just by themselves. All you do is add up the cost of what you want and over pledge that amount. All of these prices are for Hand Painted numbers.
I.E. If you just want 3 D20's : Pledge at the $1 add-on level then add up the cost of 3 D20's and pledge that amount.
Or if you want a 10 Dice Polyhedral set but want 4 Fudge dice as well, add the cost of the 10 Dice set and then add the cost of the four Fudge Dice to your order total.
Basically just over pledge to buy the amount of dice you want, and your set!
With the rainbow Stretch goal unlock you get to choose whatever color of die you want, even in individual dice!
And remember, shipping is a flat rate fee. So you don't incur any additional shipping charges for adding dice.
We hope you like the dice. Since launching the campaign so many people have commented on twitter and Kickstarter with their support, and honestly, it has been a bit overwhelming. Thank you all so much!
A few people have asked us what our dice were made out of in the comments section in Kickstarter. Instead of posting a update with that information we wanted to post in the main Kickstarter page.
We use a Polymer that is similar in some ways to certain Polycarbonate materials. We can't detail our exact process or materials, because somethings like our color techniques are, to my knowledge, completely unique to us, but that should be a good baseline. There are many types of glass including metallic alloys, ionic melts, aqueous solutions and molecular liquids. If interested in more detail, please feel free to send us a private message. If the science stuff seems interesting to you, I would strongly recommend checking out Wikipedia on Glass, Polycarbonate and Bulletproof glass.
What about stretch goals and add-ons?
Originally the plan was to do no add-ons with two small stretch goals. We had no idea how popular the project would be after two days! We knew we would hit our funding goal plus some, but you have knocked it clear out of the park. We had some dream stretch goals thought up just encase, but never thought we would get to use them. Thank you so much for proving us wrong!
UNLOCKED! Stretch Goal #1 $12,500 : Rainbow sets!
Rainbow dice sets. So many of you have asked for it, I can't say no any longer.
This Stretch Goal unlocks the ability to select a rainbow of colors instead of just picking one. When the campaign ends, Backerkit will send out a survey where you can select any color you want for each Dice instead of our normal colors.
So now if you want a Fire Agate set with a Ruby D20, you can do that. If you want 5 Ruby and 5 Sapphire D6 in a set you can do that!
UNLOCKED Stretch Goal #2 $20,000 : Fudge Dice!
This is a rough Prototype Fudge/Fate die.
You can now select Fudge/Fate dice as a reward level instead of normal numbered D6! You can also purchase them as a single dice add-on. After the campaign finishes you will have the option to choose between standard numbered D6 or Fudge die.
UNLOCKED Stretch Goal #3 $25,000 : A Brand New Color - Emerald!
This Emerald color is Kickstarter exclusive and will only be available during this campaign!
UNLOCKED Stretch Goal #4 $30,000 : Number Color Ink option : Black!
You will have the option during checkout to have Black inking for your numbers instead of white. This will have no additional charge.
UNLOCKED Stretch Goal #5 $35,000 : D6 Prism Dice with pips instead of numbers!
Photo for example only.
Will be my Sharp edged optically clear D6 dice, but with pips instead of numbers.

We are posting a September Estimated Delivery date, but we will actually begin shipping product within 30 days of the end of the Kickstarter.
We are making dice now. We do not need to recreate tooling or other things.
Unless things start to get out of hand with orders, we are planning on having ALL dice from the Kickstarter shipped by September. Even if it does get out of hand, YOU WILL have your dice by Christmas time.
If not, we are going to owe you free dice. How about that for a fulfillment promise!
WAVE 2 SHIPPING INFORMATION!
If you have made a pledge with Wave 2 in the title, you are in the second shipment of Prism Dice.
Because all Dice are made by hand we simply took as many orders as we could fill for 2016, then capped it and started orders for 2017.
Please see Update #16 for more information.
We need to get the word out to as many gamers as we can. If you would like to help us, it would sure be appreciated! More orders will allow us to bring our other dice types to market sooner, and most importantly get them into your hands faster! We have so many more dice we have been working on, and we can't wait to share them with everyone down the road. This is only the beginning!
Risks and challenges
We have done a ton of work on our end to mitigate any problems that may come up during fulfillment of the kickstarter. We are making the Dice in large batches, and have been for months just to get everything figured out. This is not a theoretical product. We won't be affected with long shore dock shipping delays as we make things in house.
But there are still things that could affect a delay of order fulfillment.
1 - Quantity.
We could get a tremendous amount of orders. Even though we have ironed out all issues, we still make each dice by hand. It takes someone skilled to sit down for a bit with each dice and get everything right. If orders jumped through the roof, I would have to hire additional help and train them on our tools and materials. We don't see this as a major setback, but it could cause a few months delay.
2 - Shipping issues.
We have no control over USPS shipping. A package could go missing and need to be sent out, Dice could take a while to clear through customs, ect. Again, this won't affect delivery times in any serious way.
3 - Injury or Act of God.
If one of our staff fell ill and was unable to work, we would have to train someone else to take up the mantle for a bit. If a Lightning bolt hits the shop and destroys a bunch of equipment, it would take a bit to rebuild our tools to continue production.
4 - Tarrasque attack
Seriously, everyone will have more to worry about than Dice.
We feel confident that we are prepared for any challenges that come up during production and shipping. Our blood, sweat and tears have gone into this project for two years and we are ready. We will be able to work through whatever problems come up and stay in constant communication with backers about what is going on.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
