What is “On the Road with the Green & Gold?”
On the Road with the Green & Gold – A Journey into Packer Nation is set forth for the fans of the Green Bay Packers. It aims to celebrate and illuminate the devotion, rituals and pride of arguably the most fervent fan base in the NFL during a time of unmatched connectivity.
On the road I will immerse myself into the culture of Packer Nation by attending 10 games at either the historic Lambeau Field or an away game at an opposing venue. Additionally, a component of the project that brings me great excitement is I will attend six games at different “Packer Bars” across the country.
Packer Nation is bursting at the seams with passionate fans. Not only do these fans have an immense amount of pride for their beloved Packers, they always have stories about how they are connected to the team. This endeavor aims to embrace the fan base and seek out Packer Backers in all corners of the country, honoring this unified network of people who rally around the Green Bay Packers.
End Result is a Book
I am a writer, I have been writing for Lombardiave.com for nearly three years. So of course the output of this journey will be a book where I will share the stories that I collect from Packer Fans across the nation. I will detail the places I visit, people I meet, circumstances I encounter, and of course my game day food and drink. I would be remiss if I didn’t reference the action on the field, but like I said, this is about the fans.
Keeping in Touch Along the Way
In addition to the book I will create an exclusive On the Road with the Green & Gold Blog where I will share stories and provide insight into my weekly travels. I will also use various social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to keep in touch with Packer Nation and provide you, the fans, a chance to participate in the journey in real time.
Where is Your Favorite Packer Bar?
This project is meant to be interactive and I look forward to connecting. I even offer the opportunity for you to direct this journey. Please email me or tweet me, @phughespdx, to share with me your favorite Packer Bar in the United States. Tell me why I should watch a game at your bar. What makes it special, what are your traditions? Then tell your friends to reach out to me. If I hear from enough of you I may just end up on a bar stool next to you!
The Money & How it is Utilized
Just as this project is for the fans I can’t do it without the assistance of Packer Nation. I really believe in this project and the necessity of detailing and sharing the unique qualities of this loyal fan base. But I’ll be frank; it’s not going to be cheap to pull this off. Never-the-less, I am confident in the value of this project and the need to see it realized.
Through this Kickstarter Campaign and your generous support, I hope to make this journey a reality. The Kickstarter Campaign will not pay me for my time, but the $40,000 I have calculated that I need to make this project a success will fund the following:
• Develop and launch the exclusive On the Road with the Green & Gold Blog.
• Produce and distribute rewards to the project Backers. This includes the finished e-book, printing of the soft-cover and hard-cover copy books, postage and shipping, administrative fees, and of course the dreaded taxes.
• Cover airfare, game tickets, and travel expenses associated with watching our beloved Green Bay Packers’ games at 10 stadiums and 6 Packer Bars throughout the 2014-2015 regular season. I will keep trip costs down by staying with friends and family members where I can.
The first stretch goal of $50,000 will allow the journey to continue beyond the regular season and for me to attend the Playoff games and the Super Bowl.
If I receive $65,000 in pledge amounts, Fro Waters, an artist, photographer and a film industry professional living in Portland, but originally from Green Bay Wisconsin will join me on the journey during the regular season to collect video and provide photography coverage that will enhance the experience and further document the intricacies of the culture that surrounds the Green Bay Packer’s fan base.
If I receive $75,000 Fro will also accompany me through the playoffs and the Super Bowl.
Photos and video collected by Fro may allow us to develop additional products, such as a photo centric coffee table book, or video documentary after the season is complete. Fro and I will share lodging and travel expenses to keep costs down.
The majority of my time spent developing this project, writing the Blog posts, interacting with fans, and writing the book will only be covered if the project gets funded beyond the target goals.
Let’s Do This!
Packer Nation I am a passionate and ambitious guy and for better or for worse when I get excited about something I feel it a necessity to see it through. Let’s do this! I will make you proud, you have my word! Go Pack Go! And I will see you On the Road with the Green & Gold.

Risks and challenges
As for risks and challenges, the biggest risk is, you’re all gonna laugh at me. But I have pretty thick skin and if truth be told I’ve been laughed at before.
All kidding aside when embarking on a project and pushing one’s limits there are bound to be some risks and challenges. There may be some health and safety risks associated with going to opposing stadiums. But I’m fairly easy to like and I’ve been around enough to know when to keep my mouth shut.
Managing my day job as the owner of a small business combined with the rigors of travel and responsibilities to Packer Nation may be taxing, but fortunately I have the flexibility to design my own schedule and feel confident that this is a challenge that I am well suited to succeed at.
Writing my first book might be considered a challenge, and expect that it will pose some degree of difficulty. However, writing is one of my strengths and writing about the Green Bay Packers is one of my passions. Having written articles and copy on a variety of topics (e.g., sports, gardening, politics, and the environment) for newspapers, websites, and various blogs and publications, my involvement in writing about the Green Bay Packers for the LombardiAve.com Blog over nearly the last three years has allowed my writing to progress and encouraged me to take this talent and passion to the next level. The positive interactions with my talented mentors and readers combined with my borderline obsessive (as my wife calls it) use of social media and experiences at Packer Bars have given me a profound appreciation for the connectivity of Packer Nation and I see this is a story that needs to be told.
And while I wholeheartedly acknowledge that the journey will push the limits of my comfort zone, I have always found that vulnerability to be the place from which growth occurs and magic happens. Packer Nation, you have my word that I am ready for this challenge and if you enjoy my writing style on Lombardiave.com, this book will not disappoint.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
